Tantrik Confesses To Child Sacrifice In Bankura

"A self-styled tantrik in a Bankura village has confessed to beheading a newborn and licking the blood dripping from its severed head.
Police haven't found the motive for the human sacrifice but they have the dagger used in the grisly ritual and pictures of the baby's head hanging by a rope. The torso is still missing and the parents of the infant are yet to be traced.
The accused, Lakkhikanto Karmakar alias Shyama, is a history-sheeter and had become a tantric some months ago. He and his mother Suli used to target unwed girls looking to abort their foetuses, say police.
It wasn't some remote village where this incident took place but on the outskirts of the industrial township of Asansol, on the banks of the Damodar.
Shyama was so brazen that he carried out his gruesome act in full public view, at the Kalakuri village graveyard where he had built a makeshift temple. People were horrified to see the head of an infant hanging from a tree and Shyama licking the blood that was trickling down the severed neck.
They grabbed him and beat him up. It took police quite a while to rescue him from being lynched.
'Karmakar is notorious in these parts. He performed the rituals here with his mother Suli. He is known to have married seven times. Suli is approached by unwed women who are looking for abortions,' alleged Nirmal Mondal, a villager.
Police officers, however, wonder how Karmakar and his mother could perform the grisly rituals in the open.
'We have seized the dagger but the post-mortem report is awaited. We shall know more after receiving the report. Villagers have alleged that Karmakar is involved in several crimes. Once we trace the child's parents, we shall come to know what actually happened on Sunday,' said Bankura SP Pranav Kumar.
'There is a possibility that Karmakar didn't murder the child but picked up its body from somewhere near the crematorium. People who claim to be tantriks perform such gruesome rituals to fool villagers into believing in their powers. Some villagers have spoken out against Karmakar but there must have been some people in Kalakuri who patronized him. Our records say Karmakar was arrested several times for serious offences like robbery and extortion. He seems to have turned into a tantrik a few months ago,' a police officer said."

" In a suspected case of human sacrifice, a seven-year-old girl was kidnapped and killed in in Dhammaur area, police said. The mutilated body of Sheelu, who was missing since April 18, was recovered from a field in Manbhawna village this morning, SP Alankrata Singh said. The body has been sent for autopsy and further investigation is on. The police station in-charge of the area, P L Verma, has been suspended for allegedly showing laxity in the investigation into the case."

TAMIL NADU: DMK MAN, TWO OTHERS, HELD FOR HUMAN SACRIFICE

" A DMK leader and two others have been arrested in Madurai in connection with an alleged case of human sacrifice of a five-year-old Dalit girl in January, 2011.
A Ayubkhan, a member of DMK General Council, and brokers A Murugesan and T Ponnuchamy were arrested recently by the Madurai unit of the Crime-Branch CID police in connection with the incident that occurred in Vadipatti near Madurai, police said.
Initial investigation revealed that Ayubkhan had been advised by his astrologer to get the blood of a girl child after killing her, to conduct a ritual to ensure the smooth running of his newly constructed college.
Police also arrested Ponnusamy and Murugesan, who were engaged by Ayubkhan for identifying the girl for sacrifice, CB-CID Inspector John Britto said on Saturday.
The body of the girl was found covered in a plastic bag and abandoned in a cattle shed in Katchaikatti village on January 2 last year with cut injuries on her neck and back of her head.
The case was transferred to the CB CID on the order of the DGP following representations from the girl's family and human rights activists.
Police had earlier arrested one Karuppu and his father Mahamuni, who had allegedly killed the girl at Ponnusamy's behest in exchange for a 'huge' amount of money.
Karuppu tried to cut off his tongue while in police custody and later committed suicide. Mahamuni also died later due to some illness.
Various human rights organisations had demanded a probe into the death of Karuppu and Mahamuni."

A lot of the cases that I've read about in the past (I have to post the backlog on here eventually, but,uh) have the same thing as here, where you would think the perps would be too upwardly-mobile and bourgeois to engage in a human sacrifice, as in this example, "to ensure the smooth running of his newly-constructed college"... hmmm...

Hapless Dalit girl child a victim of superstition

"The life of the five-year-old Dalit girl was sacrificed based on the superstitious belief that the sprinkling of her blood at the construction site will give the proposed structure life and enduring strength.
Rajalakshmi, daughter of poor agriculture laborers Thotthan and Annakili of Kachakatti, was killed on new moon day. The state of the body and the manner in which the child was murdered had sent shockwaves among the villagers.
Dalit activists who spoke about the issue said that as the victims of human sacrifice were often strangers or marginal members of the community the practice was rarely challenged. It was based on 'construction sacrifice,' a practice done during the execution of building projects.
There are two categories: a sacrifice made to please supernatural possessors of the land for obtaining the title of the land; and another to bring the proposed structure to life by warding off evil spirits. This case belonged to the second category.
A People's Union for Civil Liberties team led by R. Murali, principal, Madura College, found that the murder could have had no economic or social reason as all people in the colony were Dalits.
Mr. Murali said that they concluded that it must have been a case of human sacrifice as the child was found missing a day before Amavasai. Also, a person who indulged in black magic in the area was missing since the day of the murder. The PUCL found that there was not a single drop of blood in the body and the flesh near the child's face had been cut using a sharp weapon.
