Permanent Atonal Symphony, opus 46.

On 29 April 1995, having forgotten my earplugs (a rare occurrence), certain events on stage at the conclusion of a gig (namely instruments being left against speakers and a soundboard effects switch being turned to the max) induced a case of permanent and possibly incurable tinnitus in me. I remember the scenario well because at least 100 remaining in the audience were physically bent over and retching in pain for nearly 45 seconds with no escape. Thanks to the Reid bros/J&MC.

For my entertainment in any silent room I have a mosquito pitch whistle and a slightly lower drone in the left ear, and a swirling register of strings and synth in my right ear. 24/7. I know, from dialogue with many temporary sufferers, that this is the kind of thing that would drive many beresk...

but it hasn't affected the quality of my life, with the exception of a recognition that I may never experience silence again.

Over time I have experimented with various remedies including a number of forms of meditation, cranial osteopathy, floatation tanks, and I can't remember which herbal and other treatments... with no expectations and no results.

There are (in my dated understanding) two major forms (of the physical, not psychosomatic variety) - one which is treatable and one where the tiny little hairs have been permanently damaged and flattened. I have convinced myself I have that second form, and not invested a lot more time in researching it. Although I did come across some "miracle cure" online by accident about three months ago and read about 50 pages into its testimonial statements before giving up.

Does anyone share this entertaining musical condition with me? I am going to post my future experiences and any new variations that my audio sensors come up with for my brain's entertainment, hereabouts.

I have it too. Nothing works but Chorlton swore on taking Ginkgo biloba. I believe there is a thread here about that very subject. Mine is a very high pitch ring 24/7.

I need white noise around me to distract. I usually listen to my music fairly loud to drown it out.

The worst time is trying to go to sleep at night when there is total silence.

I don't know the cause of my tinnitus. It just started one day after my Dad passed away suddenly. It has been over 12 years now.

    You have my sympathy WITD

    Your sympathies are symphonically reciprocated.

I can recall you mentioning this wherever it was you mentioned it Pam.

The quality of my life is not affected that much, but a corollary is that in a crowded room with music playing I can't be bothered too much with conversations - I can only nod my agreement with someone's sentiments, refraining from asking them what the hell they said as that can mean they think shouting in my ear is the solution - which probably isn't that good for tuning my inner string section.

It is the same for me. If I am in a crowded room with music I can't hear anything other than the music as well. I avoid the situation at all costs now as it is very frustrating.

I feel like I am alone in my own little world in a crowded room just people watching. It is kind of a surreal feeling.

It's a feeling that is quite OK if it is accompanied by a relaxing mood altering inhaled product, bright stroboscopic lighting, and a good meditation while leaning against a comfortable cushioned pillar.
