OK their is a domain name me and miss silver want to buy. Previously we were quoted like 100 bucks but We have other things to spend 100 bucks on currently... HOWEVER! Upon checking it out today we found the domain name has expired.
The page is parked at godaddy.
If we subscribe to godaddy and when the minimum bid we could have this domain for around 15 to 20 bucks depending on the taxes.
THIS WOULD BE FUCKING AWESOME!!!!
BUT!!
Is their a way to get this domain with out fucking with godaddy?
If we buy the domain name will we own it or would be be renting it from go daddy?
Is go daddy just the sever hosting the name? If so isn't their another way to get the domain name instead of doing this auction bulshit with them?
We seriously want this fucking website... It would be just the fucking coolest thing! SO any help is much appreciated.

So I am looking around online for the answer too.. I read mixed things about the go daddy auction.
As I understand it Go daddy it just the host... Once I own the domain name I can have it hosted anywhere right?...
And if I am correct aren't people supposed to buy or renew domain names from Some other internet body and not Go daddy?..
Meh questions questions.....
No matter what when this costs 20 bucks or less I am gonna do it... I just want to make sure I do it right, that What I own will be mine and that I can have it hosted where ever I want... I don't want to get locked into anything with go daddy because I think I'd rather go with a Vbulletin like what we got here.

Usually, even if they've allowed the registration to lapse, the Domain service (which is GoDaddy in this instance) will keep the URL upwards of a year... unless they sell it...
What I"m trying to say, ist hat it might be some time before that URL becomes available for purchase... even if you bid on it tomorrow.
but anyway, once the registration lapses completely, and not even go-daddy is the registrant, then yes, you can pick up the URL from any service out there...
The reason they do this kind of thing is to prevent someone from picking up a URL the day after someone forgets to pay the registration fee...
That, and the host will try and make a buck off the traffic the domain recieves (via the 'auctions you're talking about, or by charging the person who forgot to renew a special fee for accidentally forgetting).
I have never heard of anyone 'renting' a URL... its always yours when you purchase it... You can even move the registration from one registrant to another if you wish... you don't have to stick with go-daddy if you buy it from them.
Hope thats helpful.

Contact godaddy and see if you can buy it off them.
In a sense a person does lease or rent a domain name from ICANN and has control of it for as long as the yearly fee are paid. Registering a name makes it 'yours' only for as long as it is paid although it can be transferred to another with profit. The DNS names and addresses are controlled by ICANN.
