A new unithread?
Me, I grew up with a relative who worked at a printing company, so I would get every new Disney comic every week. Always liked Donald Duck over Mickey Mouse. What intelligent human being wouldn't?
Then Marvel then DC, then collecting rare back issues, then some Image, and enjoyed the Vertigo imprint at DC for a while, and during all that time some of the true independents.
Then I stopped buying and reading them altogether.
One of my peers has shared his hobby, that stays with him to this day, with his young son. To the point that there are Marvel and DC action figures on wall mounts in every room of the house. Every action figure ever produced. The boy knew the name of every superhero by the age of 5 and could recite their powers and win card games with superheros and their powers (I can't remember the name of the Marvel one I played with him).
What's your history? Everyone should have one. I know there are nerds and geeks here with similar interests, obviously MissA being the biggest geek on the board by far (hugely overshadowing Jedimiller and mojo) will have some great stories~!
Also, because I've stopped reading and want to "catch up" I have a couple of questions:
1. What are the 5 most important comics currently being published today? (the current ones, no nostalgia).
2. Has Disney changed Marvel much?
3. Who is buying comics these days? What kinds of people, that you know?
Please answer the questions (if you can) in your contribution to this thread, or have fun and destroy each other with superpowers.
I will use my powers to viscerally and psychically assassinate and dismember any person who moves to put this thread into Dramakon, where the dead boy IEF is the king shit pussy in that hell.

She's kind of suited to a comic portrayal huh.
Did she ever have a comic version? Did Duran Duran?
What about Jane Fonda working out?

1. 5 most important comics today? Don't know. I was a HUGE Marvel guy, from around 10 years of age until i was 16. Still have a lot of them in mylar or comic bags in the basement. A buddy of mine started recollecting for about a year or so, so I would read his comics. He bought Marvel, mostly. Anyway, as this is a conspiracy site (is it), there was a ongoing storyline called Civil War that seemed important. Basically, the government has superheroes work for them. It even hires super villains. Those that won't register are enemies of the state - Wolverine, Spiderman, Dr Strange, Powerman, Iron First, and a few other became the New Avengers. They were enemies of the state. Good shit.
2. I can't say I saw much in any way that Disney changed Marvel. The changes I notice were already in play when I was 15 or 16 and the Mutant Massacre was the them de jour. Mostly, these huge story lines that would go through all of the different comic titles. I have mixed feelings about those.
3. My buddy was the only one I know who was buying comics. He stopped as soon as he got really into his new motorcycle - riding it and working on it.

Thanks egg!!!
The storylines make you buy into more comic titles to follow the storyline, eh. I used to do that reading some cross-overs but if the writer or artist was someone I didn't care about then fuck the storyline!
Actually the huge (in the minds of the protagonists) crossover storylines moving across different titles do dound familiar.

Yeah. That was my problem with them, as well. It was actually something that helped me stop the comic addiction/habit in my teens. They made it too difficult to keep up.
I loved Thor, the X-Men, Spidey. I also collected the Avengers, the Hulk and Iron Man. I know I am missing comics but those were the big 6, for sure.
I still have the first Macfarlane Spidey and the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles number 2. It was worth far more then than it is now.
There was a point, when I was 14 where, going to Mike's comic shop on Austin Street on a Thursday (new comic day) buying my fix, going home and making a bowl of Corn Pops and reading my comic books in front of the TV was pure heaven. Truly.

True nostalgia egg!
I read comics from the age of 4 but I never met another kid who collected comics till high school, and that is a friendship built on this originally, that has lasted!
I have to comment on something with Donald and Daisy Duck that I noticed just now opening the thread for a third time. Even though they are naked from the waist down and they have no genitals, they are still not entwined but just having a polite Disney A-frame hug!
LOL!!
Excelsior.

Yeah, I bought them when I was just a little little dude (or, my parents did for me) but I wouldn't say I was a collector. It wasn't until got a bit older that
i got serious about it.
I don't remember ever buying a Disney comic, I must admit. As for DC, Green Lantern was the man, hands down. Batman and Superman had their time, too, with me.

Damn you! But last post of the day... (I hope)
1. What are the 5 most important comics currently being published today? (the current ones, no nostalgia).
Current ones no nostalgia???? Okay.
People always think I'm weird because I cross over, I'm not "Make Mine Marvel"...I can see value in both.
CAPTAIN AMERICA
I used to find this character very "meh" but the storyline where Captain America had to be taken out because he stood against the government was brilliant. Being one of the few "lawful good" characters and then turning into a "chaotic good" for the sake of "freedom" was actually pretty cool. It allowed the writers not only to reinvent Cap, but remind people about what they believed America to be.
They've also put him through tribunals, etc. I'm not a Cap fan but the last decade what the writers have tried to do has been interesting.
SPIDERMAN (Ultimate)
It's fucking Spiderman. Nuff said.
BATMAN
Yes, cliche, but for a reason. Batman has no superpowers and fights crime as good, if not better than superman. It basically tells the smart kids that if they applied themselves to physical activity such as ninja skills they, too, could be "super". Also, every once in a while they do neat stuff like give him Green Lantern's ring and get him eyebrow raising relationships such as that with Catwoman.
ANITA BLAKE
Yes, so what? I like those comics. Bite me.
THE NEW FRONTIER
Just set the bar for beauty.
IRON MAN
I'm putting him on here because of the impact that the character has made and helped to ensure that comics on the big screen (especially Marvel) wouldn't suck.
2. Has Disney changed Marvel much?
The comics, no.
3. Who is buying comics these days? What kinds of people, that you know?
The same nerds that always have, and people who realize that "geek" is the new "chic". The newcomers are people who have seen Ironman, TDK, and others and want to continue the wonder they saw on the screen.
I think the only comic book characters that have been consistently well written are Spiderman and Batman. The others come and go, but you know you won't get shit if you buy either ones of those. I love Thor...LOVE Thor when he is written well, but when he's not its just okay. I love the new Wonder Woman but again, I don't know how that will pan out.
Short runs are great. I like Catwoman's, for example.
Graphic novels are awesome. The art is usually beautiful and the stories compact.

I have always thought (thanks, Batman) that it would be fun to be a superhero and just fuck with people's heads...like, why is this person in a suit?
So I take great pleasure in reading about people on the Superhero Registry who actually do this weird stuff or those two teenagers in Jersey a few years back who (after the Dark Knight) got Ninja weapons and were actually beating up drug dealers until they were caught.
I'll try to find the mugshots....

When I was very young I gave over my comic book collection for the irresistible allure of the newest form of subversive cartoon syndicate- Harvey Kurtzman, Bill Gaines, Al Jaffee- a phenomenon known as Mad Magazine. I looked on sadly as my cherished super heroes were summarily beaten back into the pulp that birthed them by the advance of the Anti-heroes- the creations of the beatnik minds of these revolutionary illustrators. I never went back and never will.

While DC Comics continued to advance their stable of superheroes as the post modern zeitgheist- the face of the conquering American Empire- the American face that I came to recognize was that new iconic Mona Lisa of the age- the moronic and ironic visage of Alfred E. Neuman. While my friends were proudly counting MIGs shot down in Korea (and apprenticing as willing cannon fodder in the Empire's newest adventure- Vietnam) I was hanging in espresso dives commiserating with old men and women who judged all the heroics of Empire to be fatuous, decadent, sophomoric and destructive of the human soul.

You know...the Dark Knight movie dealt with anarchy, free speech, privacy, chaos, real right from real wrong--if there is even such a things as "right"--not flag pumping bullshit.
The joker was actually sympathetic in many ways and Batman's decisions were harder and filled with angst.
It really upped the ante on what is a "hero"...

Comic books are not what people think. They have engaging story lines. Real questions of mores and ethos. They are mini passion plays in brilliant colors.
The art is fantastic and they keep you gripped from week to week. They've dealt with issues of racism, patriotism gone mad, sexism, rape, war, stds, homosexuality...and done it better than television.

I kick myself when I didn't sift through the 'intact' piles of comic books in this one abandoned home we discovered years ago.
The home and comics looked like it was right out of the 40's/50's?

Had I known better, I would've checked to see if the home had insulation (not the normal pink stuff), as some people used to use old movie placards to fill in the gaps in the walls.
I heard someone found a treasure trove of them back a few years ago, and they were still in good shape.

Comics are a good investment depending on the popularity. Egg mentioned his TMNT comics. Four years ago they would be meaningless, but a new live action movie is coming out and thats raising the price.
Those of us who have TDK are sitting on a gold mine when we retire. :D
I also have limited edition Apocalypse with the alternate cover (gotta get those). Actually, you need to cozy up to the comic book shop owners because they can make sure their regulars get the best covers.

Looks like WITD's(PBUH's) silly thread is slowly taking on a new direction- from literature to litterature. He will be pissed and we won't be wanting to confront his righteous wrath. Oh well- fuckem...
I am enjoying this thread and especially reading members' own backgrounds in comic reading.
There should be more commentary on the question, what are the most important 5 comics being published in the world today (thanks MissA, and others) but that's a difficult one if in reality a lot of members aren't reading comics - which is to be expected!
To comment for BE - without putting too fine a point on things:
* it is pretty obvious to anyone appreciating subtleties that I write cliterature - not the kind that you might find in bodice rippers, but the kind that inspires with a good level of intensity and passion;
* some people are fantastic in that genre, some people are total shit, we all know where we sit in that spectrum, and in the game of life, some people try hard and lose, lose, lose again - the kind that don't win trust and respect;
* superheros make appearances in that genre and go on apparent crusades facing all kinds of supervillains and even, as we have seen in the commentary on multi-title crossovers in this thread, truly finding themselves in the mirror and what side they are on in the battle of good vs evil. Living psychodrama is fun for the strong and it will kill the weak totally. The true superheros are consistent in their goal of eliminating the worst most evil total shit, knowing themselves in the mirror and spending whatever time they must in the dark sides and the light sides, on their own - never banding in cliques except for those formed with the goal of eliminating the worst most total evil shit;
* personally, I would give a categorical assurance and guarantee that I have written no literature/cliterature in the past week at all that is written without the intent of fulfilling every part of a plotline in the realm of good and evil. The script is already written, maybe you only need to reread it to see that and where this thing ends, and a new story begins.
And, there ain't nuthin wrong with Archie Comics - everyone comes to the comics genre with their own path!

The hypocrisy of appearing in a topic with no relevant contribution, while he (WITlesS) has the topic author on Ignore, is unmanly behavior, and other than demonstrating this, it is immaterial to the dialectic.
We are no closer to establishing a group of 5 titles that are the most important comics in publication today. I may take MissA's by default if there are no other contributions than nostalgia and catfighting.

Back from the dead in the first of an occasional series - the scourge of 1980s student newspapers, everybody's favourite "naughty auntie" Knuckles the Malevolent Nun returns to challenge the status quo, molest farm animals and show you her rosary. Original creators Cornelius Stone and Roger Langridge are in the saddle again, and there's an eye-watering assortment of guest artists offering their own interpretations of her gorgeous visage (and parts south). This issue sees Her Malevolence travel to a cosmic sewer, abuse her fly, contemplate eating an endangered species or two, prove that Humpty Dumpty was pushed, and pose nude for a reality-bending masterpiece guaranteed to fry your mind. (Scenes of Knuckles eating a Cruntucky Fried CruntTMburger are, however, not for the faint of heart.) Proceeds will go to Knuckles' Retirement Home for South American War Criminals.

For example, Maggie's character debuted as a slight yet curvy young adult Pro-solar mechanic living in a world both distinctly chicano and punk with a sci-fi twist. As Jaime developed her character in more detail, she started to gain weight slowly. Over the years, Maggie and the other characters have evolved, growing more layered and complex as their stories develop. The present Maggie is now the manager of an apartment complex with bleached blonde hair and a penchant for wearing sexy bathing suits on her rubenesque figure. Jaime has also made extensive use of flashbacks, with Maggie and the others presented at different ages from toddlers through teenagers and young adults to thirtysomethings. The first issue of volume two of Love and Rockets featured a cover with a range of different Maggie ages/looks.
The original runs of Palomar and Locas have each been collected in recent one-volume editions by Fantagraphics (see Palomar (graphic novel)), although not all of the stories involving "Locas" and "Palomar" characters are contained in these collections. The original fifty-issue Love and Rockets "Volume One" has also been reprinted in its entirety in both a fifteen-volume paperback library, and more recently a seven-volume mass-market paperback series by Fantagraphics. In addition, several hardcovers collect edited versions of the series tales.
Many attempts have been made to make L&R into a movie, or series of movies. However, until recently, the movie rights had been held up in litigation for over 15 years."

15 years of litigating the film rights to a comic?
Yes it seems over the top a little, all I could find in interviews as to why this process has been so lengthy was the author's insistence on Mexican American actors to play the characters.
But maybe it's quite low key. Some things are decades in the making and riddled with litigation - I would like to ask Peter Jackson about breaking down the ridiculous Hollywood mafia, and how the (awful) third in the "Qatsi" series (Koyaanisqatsi/Powaqqatsi/Naqoyqatsi) got funded.

1. Important comics?
SAN DIEGO – The cast of the upcoming Universal Pictures film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World kicked things off at the 22nd annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards (the Eisner Awards) by awarding the Best Humor trophy to cartoonist Bryan Lee O'Malley for the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe (published by Oni Press).
The top winner at the gala awards ceremony held July 23 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront in San Diego was graphic novelist David Mazzucchelli, whose critically acclaimed Asterios Polyp (published by Pantheon) garnered the Best Graphic Album–New award as well as Best Writer/Artist and Best Lettering.
The Eisner Awards ceremony, which honors comics' best and brightest, is at the premier awards event for the industry, held at Comic-Con International (Comic-Con), the largest comic book and popular arts event in Western Hemisphere.
The other creators who received multiple awards were manga creator Yoshihiro Tatsumi for A Drifting Life (Best Reality-Based Work and Best U.S. Edition of International Material–Asia), published by Drawn & Quarterly; artist Jill Thompson for Beasts of Burden (Best Publication for Teens, Best Painter), published by Dark Horse; artist J. H. Williams III for Detective Comics (Best Penciller/Inker, Best Cover Artist), published by DC); and writer/artist team Eric Shanower and Skottie Young for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Best Limited Series, Best Publication for Kids), published by Marvel.
No single publisher dominated the evening. DC Comics had four winners, including two for Absolute Justice; Dark Horse, IDW, Image, and Marvel Comics all received three trophies; and First Second and Drawn & Quarterly receive two.
The awards were presented at the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. MCs Maurice LaMarche (voice actor, Pinky and the Brain, Futurama) and Bill Morrison (creative director for Matt Groening's Bongo Comics) kept the program going at a brisk pace. Assisting them on stage was actress Kayre Morrison. Presenters during the evening besides the Scott Pilgrim cast included actor Thomas Jane (The Punisher, Hung), writer/actor Ben Garant (Reno 911) who was joined via video by writing partner Tom Lennon; voice actor Phil LaMarr (Futurama, Samurai Jack); Watchmen co-creator Dave Gibbons; award nominees James Robinson, C. Tyler, and Laurie Sandell; and Comic-Con special guests Berkeley Breathed, Chris Claremont, Milo Manara, Peter Bagge, James Sturm, and Jillian Tamaki.
Sergio Aragonés once again presented the Hall of Fame Awards. The six inductees and their acceptors were: Steve Gerber (accepted by his daughter, Samantha), Dick Giordano (accepted by his longtime business partner Pat Bastienne), Burne Hogarth (accepted by his son, Ross), Michael Kaluta (accepted by his editor, Shelly Bond), Bob Montana (accepted by his daughter Paige and son Donald), and Mort Weisinger (accepted by his daughter, Joyce).
Among the other awards given out over the evening were the Comic-Con's Clampett and Manning awards. The Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, presented by Bob's daughter Ruth, went to Jeannie Schulz, widow of Charles Schulz and the Founding Board President of the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, California. The Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award went to Marian Churchland (writer/artist of Beast, published by Image Comics) and was presented by past Manning recipient Eric Shanower.
The sixth annual Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing was presented by Mark Evanier and Jerry Robinson to Silver Age DC Marvel writer Gary Friedrich (Sgt. Fury, Ghost Rider) and to Golden Age writer Otto Binder (Captain Marvel), whose award was accepted by Bill Schelly. Maggie Thompson (editor of Comics Buyers Guide) once again handled the special In Memoriam salute.
The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award, given to a store that has done an outstanding job of supporting the comics art medium both in the community and within the industry at large, went to Vault of Midnight of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Baby Tattoo, publishers of books for kids and adults, sponsored the retailer award.

I never read the Alan Moore graphic novel, but I quite enjoyed the film, just recently. Obviously knowing the original story might have been beneficial to the viewing, but it stood alone, better than expected.
Any opinions on how good the comic was?
If not, we can talk about Archies.

What a Comedian.
What a Comedian.
Sorry. Working all day. No time for long posts. Yeah, I liked the movie. The graphic novel writer (can't recall his name) hates Hollywood. If I remember right, he's an anarchist. He put a curse on the movie. From what I know that movie was changed somewhat.
I've also heard that the little guy (can't remember his name) is actually supposed to be Batman. Nightowl is not.
So, what did you think, WITD?

Not enough depth selling the value of the comic.

Are you saying he lost his rights and the comic company (was it DC? Vertigo?) sold the rights to the movie?

Like most artists, his opinion is subjective on adaptations of his work.
He had the same response to League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
I can't comment on From Hell, or V for Vendetta.
It remains for you to help me decide whether to read the graphic novel!
I have only perused it. My buddy read it and said the movie was much the same EXCEPT there is some sort of space alien in it. A giant destructive one. I think the ending of the movie diverges quite a bit from the comic.

I have disappointed myself in my imaginings.
Can you get your buddy to sign up and post a review please.

Hahahahahhahhahahhaha... I doubt it. The parts I did see were much like the movie. If you liked the movie, you'll probably like the graphic novel.
So, did you like the movie?
