View Full Version : Need Help with My Tattoo

I've decided since I'm turning 30 this year, I want to get a tattoo. Eventually, I want to get the Dark Side of the Moon cover tattooed across my back. Due to my inexperience though, I wanted to get a smaller tattoo first to aclemate myself to the process.

I want to get one of Syd's flies, specifically, third column, third row, on my arm or something. Someone (not naming names, but you can guess) thinks that getting a fly tattooed on myself is a bad idea.

I want to know what other people think. Is it really a terrible idea?

I have a little tattoo, you find as they get older the lines widen and the colour fades . . . it seem to get fatter. So a fly might look like a blob in ten years time . . . but you can alway get them touched up. More of a personal journey :D

I have 15 tats, and I love them all.

Go with what you like.

Most of my ink is more or less metaphysical, and representative of my varied beliefs.. However you wont find a cross (unless you count crux ansata), a star of david, or a crescent moon. :)

Ok 7 of my tattoos are just my dork markings.

But get what you know you want. Something you won't regret down the line.

And thats it for me tonight, Im dead ><

Okay, all excellent points. I really appreciate it.

At this point, I can't see regretting having a piece of Syd with me all the time. It's completely ridiculous, but having him with me all the time makes me feel not so alone.

My main contention with Cog was he thought it was GROSS. Like I stink or something. But I think it's a cute fly and it doesn't make me think of that at all.

I was really looking for someone to say, if I saw you with a fly tattoo, I would assume you smell bad.

Cogburn

I didn't think it was "gross"... I thought that if you did it wrong it would look like you'd have a bug sitting on you all the time.

I understand the fact that you are talking about getting a tatt on your body, but the Real question still remains:

who is the tatt Really For?

if it's for you and you alone, then fuck what the rest of the world thinks, (we are all a buncha freeks, anyway)

if it is a 'fashion statement', an 'accessory' like a hand bag or jewelry that is intended more for Others to enjoy, then I would recommend staying away from the smaller, "fine detailed" and "vibrant colored" artwork as (as has been mentioned already) they tend to stretch and fade over time.

For those occasions where you just want to 'look pretty' Tonight, play around with those washable kiddie tatts... there's some cool ones with good color and good details, and they let you experiment with designs and body placement Before doing the "the only way I'm getting this puppy offa me is with a branding iron" thing.

as far as placement goes, my experience has been that it's more painful to get one on bony places like shoulder blades, ankles, kneecaps etc. than it is on, say, flabby arms, sagging butts, and nice jiggly belly rolls... so, getting a nice small fly on the thigh that only takes an hour or two to apply is probably gonna feel a whole hell of a lot different than a nice, large PF design across your entire back that may take days, weeks, (maybe even months) to fully apply...

good luck.

Get what you want. As for acclimating yourself to the process, your back is gonna hurt more than your arm. More nerves and probably gonna touch more bone (depending on where you get them on the back and arm).
My buddy has a fly on his inner wrist. It's cool.

GenniferJentle

Cool, I was considering inner wrist for the fly.

It will probably hurt, but I really feel like a need some tattoo experience before I go for the full back tattoo.

Well, they'll do it in bits. And, you can tell him/her (the artist) I can only deal with an hour (1/2 hour, hr and 1/2) at a time. He'll probably do the outline first for a big tattoo and then fill it in in bits and pieces.
I only have one and got it on a whim. I had broken up with a girl and was with two old friends who are covered with them. They both were getting one that night and I just said "fuck it". Got it on my outer calf. If it hits bone, YOU'LL FEEL IT. Otherwise, it's kinda like chinese water torture. It's really annoying and gets more so the more it goes on.
I almost never even think about mine. The colors have bled. A lot of the detail is gone.
Just remember, the next day when you go to shower, you'll see a ton of ink come out. Don't freak! It's normal. I called up my buddy saying, "Shit! I think I ruined it!" He just laughed and told me it's normal.
They'll tell you to use A&D lotion. Use vitamin E lotion, too. It works well.

No "probably" about it, it WILL hurt. Anyone who says otherwise is lying. Even if you get totally 'drunk' for the needle work and 'don't feel a thing' during the application process, they take some time to heal, there will be tenderness and soreness for some days afterwards...

kinda like road rash.

A tatt that cannot be covered by 'normal' clothing and that is visible 24/7 during 'normal' activities makes one hell of a social / political statement... it's the kind of thing that cost you employment opportunities and certain social contacts... that may not be important to you Now... but hey, who knows what tomorrow will bring?... just know that visible tatts ARE a bridge burner for certain people / situations regardless of how much we believe that "it shouldn't matter".

Before branding yourself permanently in a nice peripheral vision location, you may wish to consider slapping one of those washable kiddie tatts (or draw something with a marker) on said spot and then see how much it annoys/pleases you and your current environment....

or not *shrugs*

New Royal Flavor with Lime.

Your body is a canvas. If you get a tattoo, please have it mean something of the most importance. Since I skimmed the OP, I really don't know what your getting it for. So, please make it mean something close to your spirit.

I love art, and I like to see it. But I don't want to look at it everyday, because it may start to lose it's meaning, it's value. So like whatever is being tattooed, I hope you can stand seeing it everyday, and cherish is, for all it's worth. EVERYDAY.

If my body is a temple, then I shall keep it that way. So tattoos are not for me. I have nothing against people with tattoos, it's just something I couldn't do. The way I see it, a tattoo would keep me from progressing the frame of mind when I first get the tattoo. It would be a constant reminder. Much as how certain objects (movie ticket stub) takes your memory back to a certain place. So I fear a tattoo would do the same thing. I don't hear people regretting tattoos so maybe there is less to fear than I think.

I have ink on my back. I have it in various spots. I could PM you about where is the best place for it.

IF you love that artist then go for it, BUT read INK magazine find an artist that you think does solid work and gets a lot of praise and then pay the money. Even if you have to travel. This is art for a lifetime. I traveled for all of my ink and I don't regret it.

Treat the project like buying real art. Would you buy it from WalMart or go to a gallery.

Best of luck.

Egg if you don't see that it was rude and out of line for him to assume who I am sleeping with and tell me to get checked for STDs then you and I have nothing to say.

It was offensive to me as both a person and a female.
.

Thats total bollocks. The context it was in was totally relative and very funny.

I can see where the man made the logically leap. We all do it. Just tell him he was wrong and move on, ffs.

He made the "logical leap"? A nd told me to get checked for STDs, egg?

How about the next logical leap is that I don't practice safe sex?

It wasn't funny. I'm sorry that some people think so.

By the way, it's not misogyny when you go to any of IEF's threads and see people tell him to watch out for STDs. It's actually being treated exactly the same as a man. This is how men joke around.

Was I making that sort of thread or post? This is apples and oranges. This was about ink. I didn't talk about my sex life on this thread. I was making a different statement.

On IEFs threads he is talking about sex and porn.

I say to each their own. Really who cares. I don't mind piercings or tattoos BUT, for me personally, too much of anything wrecks it. One small tattoo is enough for me, and a pierced belly button or a very small nasal piercing (a tiny tiny stud) is enough. But if people want to pierce or tattoo their entire bodies.....who cares. I might not like it, but I wouldn't not care for someone who has it.

I think if you are referring to tramp stamps that is probably true, but most people who get tattooed actually put a lot of thought into the subject as to what they are getting and who is the artist doing it.

When dumbass Britney got hers...that period I think there were a lot of tramp stamps given out and I could concur. Now it is back to real ink lovers...I think.
