When the article mentioned bald head and long rat-like tail, I thought of this creature:
Possums
http://www.junglewalk.com/animal-pictures/651/Opossum-12046.jpg
They're common all around North America.
Yet the possums in the pic above have a much longer 'snout' than that of the creature in the OP pic. As well as the fact that possum teeth are smaller and razar-type, and the OP creature exhibits 'fangs'.
Who knows how long the animal was laying around in the water, but suffice to say, probably not long enough to aid in the decomposition of its body, as well as it's eyes are still intact and haven't been eaten out by any fish or other water critters.
Funny how the people just happened upon the monster, happened to have a camera at that time, and funny how the monster seemed to 'vanish' after they went back to check on it later?

What do all these mysterious montauk monsters have in common?
1. 'Washed out look to their skin'. Almost fake like. Fabricated?
2. Appear mysteriously; disappear in the same.
3. No evidence of it every having existed except for pictures. No hair samples, blood, etc.
Edit to add:
4. They're all found around water.

i have a friend who is really into the montauk thing and he believes it is doing experimentation on what will be the animal version of GMCs. so that could be a wolver-pig or a tasmanian-veal or a opossa-hen.

Cloning for livestock
About 300 bulls have been cloned, with the aim of improving the quality of breeding stock. Cloning is too expensive, at around $20,000 per bull, to clone directly for meat, but breeding bulls are worth much more than that.
The meat and milk of cloned cattle is presently kept off the market pending FDA approval. Nevertheless, BIO is actively promoting the use of cloned and transgenic animals for human food, as well as for pharmaceuticals.
The FDA is investigating the possibility of selling meat from cloned pigs as well as cattle, and in 2003 released a draft executive summary well in advance of the report it was supposed to summarize. "The FDA wants to gauge public reaction to the prospect of food from cloned farm animals before it decides whether to require government approval of the products before they are sold. That decision is expected to take another year."http://www.geneticsandsociety.org/article.php?id=386
i think it may be shit like this IF it is not a zoo escapee

Doing a bit of digging around...
Recent events to date:
The KI was sued by Platinex Inc. over an interim order preventing Platinex from exploring. The decision was released May 22, 2007. The court issued 3 orders: a Consultation protocol; a timetable; and an MOU on the KI, Platinex, and Ontario. The Ontario Superior Court held that appropriate consultation funding was necessary, and that the Court would continue to supervise and facilitate the consultation process. The KI's position had been that "the serious imbalance between the fiscal position(s) of the parties renders the consultation process unfair." No specific finding on funding levels was made, but adequacy of funding was found to be assessable in the consultation process. Implications for other consultation processes remain uncertain.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitchenuhmaykoosib_Inninuwug_First_Nation#cite_not e-0)
In 2008, six leaders of the community (Chief Donny Morris, Jack McKay, Sam McKay, Darryl Sainnawap, Cecilia Begg and Bruce Sakakeep) were imprisoned for protesting development on their traditional land by Platinex Inc. (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Platinex_Inc.&action=edit&redlink=1). A sacred fire was consecrated in front of the Thunder Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunder_Bay) jail where they were being held, which was extinguished by police on 19 March, 2008. First Nations have spoken out about this alleged violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Charter_of_Rights_and_Freedoms) and suppression of traditional ceremony[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitchenuhmaykoosib_Inninuwug_First_Nation#cite_not e-1) Several members of KI and surrounding nations protested their leaders' imprisonment by walking all the way from Kenora (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenora), Ontario (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario) to Toronto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto). The leaders were given temporary parole to appear at the protest at Queen's Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen%27s_Park_(Toronto)) on May 26, and were permanently freed by the Ontario Court of Appeal two days later.
SOURCE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitchenuhmaykoosib_Inninuwug_First_Nation)
Platinex Inc. (http://www.platinex.com) is a Toronto based Canadian exploration company.
**Side note: Most of the gold deposits in Ontario are located in the northern part of the province.
So, just for the hell of it, I googled up 'Platinex Inc Montauk', and saw that there were some affiliations between the two.

These people have been fighting over that land area up north for quite some time. Bit of political skermish and what not.
Apparently, it's not just about the abandoned gold mines but URANIUM ones as well.
Just wondering if this creature wasn't placed there in order to bring to light the ongoing fight with the indiginous people and the corps, as there hasn't been a solution to their problem in ages.
What better way to make a name for oneselves by generating interest to their plight?

I'm going with Occam's Razer with this one.
A mysterious creature appears/disappears very quickly. Only 2 witnesses and a photo.
No other evidence.
Like I said, what better way to draw attention to one small part of the world - a place that not many people are aware of?
Somebody visited a 'special effects' department at some time, dragged the prop to the designated area - 'coincidentally' - an area that the natives are in an uproar about, placed the prop, took pics, then discarded the evidence.
Just to get the world to notice that particular area; in hopes someone might be able to help them with their cause?

oh i live for cryptozoology type stuff like this! I think,if it's real, it's most likely a deformity or genetic mis-hap of a certain animal. And its eyes lead me to believe it's either blind or has severe cataracts or some other kind of vision/eye related problems, which would coincide with birth abnormalites and other deformities while developing in the womb.

There's speculation that this creature might very well be an otter.
Not a bear. As bears have no tails, but may be an otter.
However, I find it strange that a 'mishappened otter' would have found its demise, in the fashion that the creature's body was discovered.
To have it's frontal face fur 'displaced' by any means; taking into account that the rest of the creatures' bodilly fur was 'intact' the whole time of the nurses observations, means that there was a 'precise development' going on in the frontal region of the skull, and nothing else pertaining to the body.
The other question that comes to mind...
"Why are certain teeth (masticular region) bleached white?"
I've NEVER seen ANY feral animals to exhibit THIS?
The next question should prod you....
"Is this photoshopped?"
Because if it isn't, then we go back to the question above ^^^
"Why are certain teeth (seemingly) bleached white in the OP's pics?
Crest Dental 'whitening' strips? WTF?
