Classical reasoning for electrons not crashing into the nucleus (and the analogy of earth and the sun) would have been perfectly acceptable, except for the fact that the laws of electromagnetism DICTATE that an electron in circular orbit (more generally, in any accelerated state of motion) must radiate energy in the form of electromagnetic waves. This energy would reduce the electrons total energy and cause it to spiral into the nucleus.

Now what does quantum mechanics say? It roughly says that at such small scales (around the nuclues), Newton's laws of motion do not apply anymore, and one cannot say that the electron moves in a circular orbit such that if its angle is known at a certain time, then its angle would be known at any other time. No, quantum mechanics picture of the electron's motion at such small scales is that it "disappears" from one position and "reappears" in another one. This motion is random but on the average, the regions of highest probability to find the electrons (for the lowest energy state) will draw out a spherical region in 3-d space. Under this random motion of quantum mechanics, the electron will not radiate any energy because its motion is not due to angular acceleration but due to the random quantum jumps. Think of it as a single electron smeared out in space but is otherwise stationary, this would be a close analogy (not totally correct though) for anyone not very familiar with QM.
