View Full Version : Woman X, an unkown species!
Cool find in the mountains of Siberia. Possibly a third species of human living alongside homo saps and neandertals.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Genetic material pulled from a pinky finger bone found in a Siberian cave shows a new and unknown type of pre-human lived alongside modern humans and Neanderthals, scientists reported on Wednesday.
The creature, nicknamed "Woman X" for the time being, could have lived as recently as 30,000 years ago and appears only distantly related to modern humans or Neanderthals, the researchers reported.
The sequence indicates the hominin's line diverged about a million years ago from the line that gave rise to both humans and Neanderthals and that split about 500,000 years ago.
That makes it younger than Homo erectus, the pre-human that spread out of Africa to much of the world about 1.9 million years ago.
And it would have lived near to both modern humans and Neanderthals. "There were at least three … different forms of humans in this area 40,000 years ago," Paabo said.
Krause and Paabo are careful not to name the creature a new species just yet. They are now working to sequence nuclear DNA — the DNA that makes up most of the genetic code, which will tell a great deal more about "Woman X".
Opens up some unique possibilities if true, that about 15,000 - 30,000 years ago there were at least 3 human species sharing the planet.
In the context life on this planet thats not very long ago.

Titor lovingly caressed that finger,
hundreds of thousands of years ago;
in the future.
Edit for :
Excessive letter usage.

what i should have said was "at least 3 tool using, artistic human species sharing the planet".
thats amazing.

It's from a woman.
Of course she needed a "tool".

actually, i think it's the fourth, but three of them were all around at the same time as each other.
edit: clarification

there were a number of hominid species around at the same time, but not a "mere" 30,000 years ago, and certainly not all tool users as in this case.
thiis is a really exciting find if the dating can be verified.
Makes you wonder who else was around?
I know that one modern theory of evolution is that the various hominid groups had sex and we were the result of that. You'd think there would be more variation then, no?

i believe there is some circumstatntial evidence that homo saps and neandertalis interbred. wouldnt surprise me if we interbred with many other hominid species.

well no surprise really since it seems like humans will shag anything. lol

Exactly. You take two different breeds of dogs and you get a mutt. Different dogs = different mutts.
If the various hominids could breed, I'm surprised there wasn't more variation among human beings. There really is no difference between us aside from some coloring, eye folds and hair.

as funny as that is, its also very true.
there is some evidence that "lust" is a by-product of the reproductory survival instinct. very few other animal species have sex just for the hell of it or for pure enjoyment.
and beastiality in some cultures was quite common hundreds or thousands of years ago.

Thats not true.
we're all variants of something, but defining them as another species would usually require the inability to cross reproduce/hybridize. It's like having a hybrid baby with a fucking alien :P
There's a huge difference between "breeds" and species.
i.e. Horses and donkeys can reproduce, but the offspring does not get past the kid.
The Mule is unable to reproduce.

occasionally (and this is why nature and evolution is soo fucking cool) accidents do occur.
"usually" the offspring of a tiger/lion or lion/tiger breeding will be sterile......but not always.
Both Ligers and Tigons Tend to be Steril, but every now and again a female will be fertile (no record of males being fertile) and this is because of some lucky gene protein match up. And the female will be able to bred back to a male lion or tiger.
the fertile Female liger or Tigon can reproduce as follows into a new speices.
Lion + liger = li-liger
Lion + tigon = li-tigon
Tiger + liger = ti-liger
Tiger + tigon = ti-tigon
nature is freaky, i wouldnt rule anything out, particularly if it involved a survival imperative that nature would see as an opportuntiy to evolve.

but usually the odds are against that (i guess hence why they'd be called an accident)
so, what about the welsh? are they byproducts of sheep buggering?

I posted about this a few days ago, here was an interview with one of the researchers:

I still don't understand how they can date these finds.
