*raises an eyebrow* well... unless your Cat House is somewhere near NOLA I think we're stuck with a virtual friendship, ya know?
Hazelnut

I'll settle for virtual friendship as long as its understood that NOTLD:R is the foundation and cornerstone of it. I'll have my litigator draw up the necessary paperwork for your review and signature at your leisure.

Attention: Artists/ Illustrators/ Animators,
Though it is too late to participate in NOTLD:R, starting fall 2009, Neoflux Productions will be employing a similar approach in creating artistically animated video tracks to accompany Old Time Horror Radio Dramas.
By combining these well-written and ably performed stories with our artwork, 'Unseen Horror' will usher these classic tales of the macabre into our visual culture and present them to a new generation of horror fans.

*laughs* Okay Hazelnut, but make sure they put something in there about "Dawn of the Dead" as well. Ty was awesome in that one... funny watching someone I KNOW to be a 'nice guy' play the part of a total dick wad (and quite convincingly at that) and then turn into a brain eating zombie...

Normally, I don't enjoy gore and horror, but for you, I'm going to give it my best effort.
What was the name of the British flick where the city of London was cordoned off because of some government experiment gone wrong causing the populace to turn into killer zombies?

It can happen at any time. It's not something to be taken lightly.

Hazelnut, ya, what is it with Zombies, anyway? A ghost or a reanimated skeleton is indeed 'spooky', and mummies are just stupid,,,, but put some rotting flesh on a skeleton, move it around a bit, and presto, instant creepsville.

In the one dream I had, I was in a mall, frantically trying to convince everyone that they needed to get out NOW. But they were not listening, going about their business of shopping and loitering, lollygagging along without a care in the world.
I was desperately trying to get them out of there before it was too late.
Finally, someone saw the zombies coming and started to panic. I told them not to panic, just follow me and we'll get away before they can catch up to us.
Some people realized I was right and encouraged others to follow my lead, but the majority acted like it was just another day, nothing out of the ordinary and refused to save themselves.
By the time I woke up, I had convinced about six people to get their asses in gear while the rest of the crowd was taken by the zombies. I was exhausted.
A couple of weeks later I had the same dream again.
torbjon
03-22-2010, 02:44 PM
interesting... "Dawn of the Dead" takes place in a shopping mall... did you see the flick? or maybe a trailer for it? It came out back in '04.
I wake up exhausted from my zombie dreams too... usually a lot earlier than I Want to wake up, and, of course, with absolutely No Desire to try to go back to sleep again... pisses me off, the freeks.
Hazelnut
03-22-2010, 02:49 PM
Ok, now that's just spooky. I've never seen that flick. I tend to stay away from those kinds of movies. They give me the creeps.
I don't know what it is about the living dead that is so creepy and frightening. I suppose there are a lot of people who think its just great entertainment.
torbjon
03-22-2010, 03:08 PM
Thing I don't like about 'em is that the 'bad' horror flicks rely on Shock Tactics to be 'scary'... they use "fuck you LOUD" sound cues to hurt you, poor lighting that forces you to squint to see followed by a blinding light, again to hurt you, things unexpectedly exploding in your face making your heart skip a bit, again to hurt you... and, of course, gratuitous gore for the sake of gore.
I don't go to flicks to be Hurt... life does that to me all on its own for free, ya know? Why pay for it? *laughs*
But I love a 'good' scary flick... Hitchcock was a Master of suspense and he didn't need to Rely on stock shock tactics to keep me spooked, entertained, and on the edge of my seat... that man gave a Great Ride in my book.
Hazelnut
03-22-2010, 03:27 PM
Not very many people are as observant as you. I am and it drives my hubby nuts. I'm always looking at the background and special effects, listening for audio cues and predicting the next line spoken by given actor.
I love Hitchcock's work. He makes the watcher, think. I like that.
Remember that Bruce Willis flick with the surprise ending? That was my all time favorite. I didn't see it coming like I usually do. To me, that is entertainment.
Do you also remember The Last House on the Left? I saw that thing 30 years ago and it still spooks me.

thanks for the compliment... and the observation *grins*
"The Sixth Sense", ya, that one got me too... surprisingly, the flick had already made the rounds and was out on video before I got to see it, and despite that, no one had told me the ending of it...
gig is, with flicks like that, once you know the 'whodunnit', they kinda lose their replay value for me... The story was good, but I didn't think that that Willis flick was particularly well filmed...
whereas with a Hitchcock flick, even though I know the 'whodunnit', every single frame is a breath taking work of Art

Hey all,
I saw the thread through twitter and thought I'd hop in on it.
- Yes, it's a free project and has been screening since the Fall... though being zero budget/ zero profit, there isn't any sort of promotion budget etc... so it's all a word of mouth thing... good enough for the production so good enough for the release.
Anyway some upcoming screenings:
Wednesday, March 31, 2010 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Southern Rep Theatre [New Orleans, LA]
Wednesday, April 7, 2010 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Somerville Theater [Somerville, MA]
April 9-11, 2010
Cinema Wasteland Expo [Strongsville, OH]
Apart from that any art center, independent theater, public access channel, horror host, horror conventions, film group, etc emails screenings@notldr.com and we'll hook them up and make it happen.
Speaking of horror hosts, so far Count Gore, Count Victor, and Dr Zoid have hosted it. Ormon Grimsby, Karlos Borloff, Undead Johnny, Nigel Honeybone and Baron Mondo are going to be hosting it within the month. More are lined up so if you have a local horror host, you can catch it on public access TV.
The project is also up for a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award for best independent production with a vote going til April 3rd.
http://www.rondoaward.com/rondo/rondos.html
- Wide Eye Releasing is putting out the DVD. It's set for release at late April/ early May. We're also going to have torrents, direct download, and streaming copies at the same time. The DVD is being released without profit and Wild Eye will only be recouping their cost... who knows what the shelf price will be but that's more a reflection of what the stores think they can get for it. The disk is loaded with extra stuff... so should be worth whatever it ends up being. All of the contributing artists got self distribution rights... so keep your eyes on ebay because you might be able to grab a signed copy for less then retail. Still, the digital copies will just be plain old free.
- Everyone's welcome to hop in on Unseen Horror. We're taking it as a 2 step process.
1st a single artist/ group selects a PD drama and kicks it off with their art/ animation... designing characters, sets, objects, etc with their work.
2nd everyone's invited to jump in and pull those designs through their own styles and media while we flesh out the timeline.
So, I've held back doing big announcements etc till we have the first dramas moving into the 2nd step... but if you want to take on a drama as stage 1, just drop me a line ( mike@unseenhorror.com ) and I'll go into more details so you can get started right away.

No worries. I'm used to that. Many forums tend to get to be like a community and it's good when people are protective of it. I mean I have the forums I post on regularly like All Things Zombie and we get possessive of our space. Still, whenever I see a forum threat pop up that's related to the project, I like to hop on and confirm details etc and answer any questions.
Since we aren't touching money, there will never be a big campaign which spells everything out and confirms all of the information. Besides... it's better talking one on one and it's a better fit to a project done completely by word of mouth.
So no worries. Better to have someone being protective then something that isn't worth protecting.

Yes, libraries and schools are options as well. Basically independent and non-profit venues just need to send an email to screenings@notldr.com and request it. We'll hook them up with the screener and even help promote it. Since we have artists all over, I even bang that drum and see if we have anyone from the project close enough to make it out (since they should all be given the chance to be the star of their project in their local community.) Naturally, we also have a ton of artwork (considering the whole project is made out of it) so we also try to lend a hand by mocking up some flyers etc for them to hang.
It's all fairly simple... and we've had a lot of fun taking this approach and being so hands on with everything. Keeps the whole thing alive.

This is more like a rabid prairie dog colony.....little wild-eyed heads popping up now and again, madly scanning the area for threats as crazyfoam flies from their jowls and speckles the desert around them......a new post will alert us to the presence of a n00b and will signal a mad dash at the intruder, viciously nipping at the miscreant's throat, then scrambling back to the safety of their own dirtwalled hovel.

oh, Hazelnut, I found a copy of the 1977 version of "The Last House on the Left" last night after our chat... but I had to give it a miss for now. Wes Craven and I, well,,, we don't always get along. I found some of the Freddies to be kind of funny, and he did a Twilight Zone I really liked (The Road Less Traveled) but what he did to Man-Thing (his title was "Swamp Thing) really ticked me off because I liked that comic a lot ("whatever knows fear Burns at the Man Things touch")
However, I see that this is his first flick ever, so that, coupled with you mentioning it, is enough to put it on my list of "check it outs".
I gotta be in movie mode before I do that though, not crash out mode...

Wonder how the dude makes rent... these projects are pure gratis.
Ha, I wonder that myself.
The truth is that it's a combination of two things.
1) I don't own much. I don't own a house, car, dependents, etc. So it doesn't take much to keep me going.
2) I take commissions, write comics, teach workshops, curate shows, do lectures, etc.
If you ask a successful fine artist ( specifically a concept-driven artist ), most will admit that they do not cover their cost of living by selling their artwork. Instead they focus on making work which is true to the concept ( and isn't bogged down with ideas of marketability etc ), in fact, some of their work such as installations, projections, etc are absolutely impossible to sell. So the question then should be how do they afford to continue doing that.
Well, by being true to their concept they are noted for delivering on their promises, by allowing the public access to it they are opening themselves to exposure which can't be bought, and in the end instead of creating a demand for some product (the art) they are creating a demand for some service ( them being an artist ).
So how do you live as an artist if your aren't out there trying to squeeze money out of your art? Plenty of ways.
1) Someone (who saw your work) approaches you about a commission.
This could be a grant-funded exhibition/ project, a private commission, or a commercial piece. These pieces are typically more of a technical application of the skills and or style you employed in your work then your actual art. But hell... I'd rather be a hired talent then a labored hand.
2) Someone wants you to present your work.
Lecture series, workshops, etc. When the thing you made is available to everyone then academia's answer is that they need to get you. Many conceptual artists actually fund their art by traveling to places and talking about their art. This allows that institution to offer their students something which another institution might not and that is helps them with everything from enrollment to getting additional state and national funding.
3) Someone wants to sponsor your work.
Video artists as an example often find sponsorship from video technology companies much like athletes often find sponsorship from sneaker companies. The idea is if you're doing something cool they want to be a part of that (even if it's a loss for them because you become like a promotion). A good example is when you see Bill Viola's work these days it's always on Panasonic screens or projected with Panasonic projectors. Basically, there was interest in his work and Panasonic started giving him tech to show his artwork. More over sometimes they went as far as to cover production and other expenses because when an artist is free to play with a piece of tech they are likely going to be driven to push what it can do and that's a great way for them to show off what their new HD screens can do.
Those are just a few of many examples of how that mentality works. One of the best documented examples is likely the Grateful Dead. Unlike other groups, they allowed their fans to come and record their concerts. They even encouraged people to share their recordings freely with other people. Many groups to this day would still see this as insane, however what happened was it strengthened their community, increased their fan base/ exposure etc to the point where they didn't need to worry about pleasing anyone besides those fans.
In effect what all of these things go toward is the realization is that if you stay true to your ideas and you focus on making it about the viewers then you really don't have to worry about yourself. I'm not at a point where people are throwing projectors at me... but we're already getting invited back to many venues to show the next project sight unseen and places to crash aren't in any short supply. So I'll just keep doing what I do... the rest will work itself out.
----------------------------
As a side not this isn't just me. The artist who did the stop motion sequences with the fearwerx figures is now doing a series of promotional stop motion sequences with Shocker Toys and their Indie Spotlight Action Figures.
One of the artists who made custom dolls for her sequences has been doing nothing but making custom doll after custom doll for people since post production.
Another artist who did comic style illustration just got picked up to work with a comic writer on a series of titles.
I can go on but... basically there are so many people who are full of shit out there and never get past the talking about it and into the doing it that people are happy to get behind you once you start taking action. You're jumping on Unseen Horror... so you'll see how that all works first hand.

I know that's a bit of a drive, especially to see a movie, still, it's a free screening, no reservations needed, and there's a cash bar (so byob or help SRT out by buying a few overpriced drinks)
Not sure who all is going to show up, but there may be some folks worth chatting with afterwards... the event might melt into a party (theater people are such party animals)
Since Nola's mom is running this event, I'll be watching Nola that night and can't go to the show (*pouts*) but I have lots of floor space here in my crash pad if you and yours need a place to sleep it off afterwards, no worries.

You mentioned finding a PD horror story over at archive.org that I'd like to take a crack at animating, (which is fine) gig is, I'm not seeing a list of stories anywhere that Other artists have already picked to work on...

<<<< Over there <<<<
I'm literally a communist and this is a form of communism. The problem is the worlds don't match well... so you can't be a communist and be worried about money. You have to just put it out of your mind and only think about the community... if you do things will work out. Ha that's the trick... there is no sometimes food here cookie monster. It's pick a mindset and commit to it no matter how difficult that gets. 0 + 360 will keep you moving forward... try to compromise and you aren't moving forward anymore.
I shot you back an email. Basically we aren't announcing dramas publicly until they are far enough in that they guaranteed to be completed. Better to be vague then wrong. Hopefully, that changes soon.

Wes Craven and I, well,,, we don't always get along... what he did to Man-Thing (his title was "Swamp Thing) really ticked me off because I liked that comic a lot ("whatever knows fear Burns at the Man Things touch")
Swamp Thing and Man-Thing are two completely different characters, different mythologies, different creators, different publishers. (Swamp Thing was DC, Man-Thing was Marvel).
It's unlikely one was a copy of the other, just different concepts floated at the same time...

Not having seen either of the Swamp Thing or Man-Thing movies, I can't comment on the quality of either... except that they originated in very different stories.
The best thing (IMHO) out of Man-Thing was Howard The Duck... and that became a piece of shit movie with George Lucas's involvement didn't it.

WITD: Well, that explains why I hated the Wes Craven flick, it was based on the DC comic... never really did DC, I was Marvel all the way...
HOWIE!!! Trapped in a world he never made *dreamy*
In theory, I have a box of comics in my in-laws attic somewhere... and in that box is every color issue of Howie along with the first few B&W adult oriented (ie they showed boobies!) Howard the Duck magazines... You're right, that movie Never should have been made, what a crock that was *sighs*

Mike:
I hear you about the commie thing, I'm there. That's been the bulk of my life, actually, and I'm pretty cool with it. Gig is, I have a six year old daughter, and she's a girly girl in a material world, ya know? ME living hand to mouth, going with the flow, doing my thing? No big deal. Been doing that for 30 years now and I'm quite comfortable and happy with that lifestyle...
Her, on the other hand... I'm not so sure about that. I want her to have health insurance, and a good pair of shoes on a regular basis (as she outgrows them every couple of weeks) cloths that fit, a good balanced diet, a decent education that goes beyond what I can provide for her, etc. etc. All the basic things a good parent wants for their welps, ya know?
But you're right... it'll happen... or it won't *shrugs* One day at a time...
So, I'm looking through archive.org... there's Thousands of PD stories in here, wow!... you know, if absolutely Nothing Else becomes of this, just being motivated to seriously poke around the archive has made it all worthwhile. What a fabulous site.
I suspect it's going to take me a while to find something in there that really waves my flag... soooo...
OTR, here I come!
