View Full Version : The Persecution Of.....short story competition.
The next short story contest is pretty simple, use the excerpt below as the inspiration for your tale. (The main character of your story should feel that he is being persecuted, either real or imagined by one or more people).
That is the only specific requirement, characters, location, everything else is up to you.
Word limit is anywhere between 500 - 5000 words.
Excerpt from Caleb Williams by William Godwin. (http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/world/readfile?fk_files=50223&pageno=12)
My life has for several years been a theatre of calamity. I have been a mark for the vigilance of tyranny, and I could not escape. My fairest prospects have been blasted. My enemy has shown himself inaccessible to entreaties, and untired in persecution.
Contest will run until March 28th, that should be plenty of time, winner will be decided via a poll thread for the members to vote on. No more than 2 stories per member.
All finished submissions should be posted in this forum (a new thread) with the Title of the story and (CALEB) in brackets so your story can be stickied.
Any other questions regarding the contest to be posted in this thread.
Have fun.

I like how the first topic encouraged me to whine about the alloted length, this topic gets an increase, and yet I only summoned less than 300 words.
Ahhhhh.... art. No wonder I'm a scientist; if I did this all day long I'd be swinging from trees and playing in my own shit.
No offense. :)

yeah- but do we have to use it as an inspiration or can we just ignore it and carry on?

have you read "Caliban". its a novel by Roger Macbride Allen based on Aismov's concept of the revision of his "robot laws".
i think you'd like it.
Haven't. I'll check it out.

http://www.amazon.com/Isaac-Asimovs-Caliban-Roger-MacBride/dp/1857981685
The viability of the planet Inferno depends on the coexistence of two antagonistic human societies: the Spacers, who depend on robots for everything, and the Settlers, who eschew artificial intelligence. When authorities begin to suspect the existence of a rogue robot, created without the Three Laws that ensure subservience to humans, the delicate partnership begins to unravel. Based on a discussion with the late Asimov, Allen's ( Orphancy Creation , Baen Bks., dist by S. & S., 1988) latest work is a detective novel cum literary tribute that might have been written by the master himself. A good choice for large sf collections.

Thanks, man. I've been reading more sci-fi lately than I ever had. What I do love about Asimov is that he wrote most of this stuff in the 50s so you get people living in a civilization 20,000-30,000 years in the future traveling in hyperspace and using tapes.... HA!!!! Awesome.
asimov was truly brilliant.
wrote a shitload of pure science stuff as well, most of it way over my head.
The guy definitely was brilliant. I like the way that he incorporated the two series into one.
If you read fantasy at all, read The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Fucking good stuff.
i like jordan too.
most of my collection is sf but i also have a lot of horror and fantasy. some of my most cherished stuff though is 40's, 50's and 60's sf.
I'm more of a Hesse, Vonnegut, Martin Amis type of guy but I started with Fantasy as a child. Got into sci-fi (loved the first 3 books of Dune. Read them all but didn't enjoy the final 3 as much) but never became a die hard fan. I have read Herbert, Asimov, and Heinlein, though. Good stuff.
