Mix It Up Short Story Comp.
Lets see if we can do a bit better than the last contest, which truth be told was mostly my fault. :)
Rules:
1. 500 - 1000 words, (loosely policed....plus or minus 20%)
2. Stories to be submitted by 13th february. (give or take 24 hours due to time zones).
3. Winners chosen via membership poll.
4. Submit as many stories as you like.
Themes:
1. A human and an alien hook up on Valentines Day.
2. A caravan (modern, ancient or futuristic) gets lost in a strange country, land or world!
3. A castle, hatred and a necklace.
4. An internet cafe that isn't quite what it seems.
Post your stories in this forum with (MIX) in brackets and name of story as the title of the thread.
Use any or all of the above themes in your story as either the main theme or just as a sub plot.

about 1 week to go to get your stories in everyone. then i'll set up a poll thread with links to all the stories. we'll leave the poll up for a few days to give everyone a chance to vote then announce the winner(s).

only a few days left to get your stories in.
so far we have 6 entries from a total of 3 members, which is a pretty piss poor effort really.
we have some truly smart and creative people on the board, we also have lots of folk who like to complain about the quality of the board content from time to time but when given the opportunity to do something about it do sweet fuck all.
so anyway 3 days to get your stories in if you can be bothered....whatever.

The turn out for this contest this time has been small... Amkon is a small site. All the same I enjoy the writing contests. Others do too.... And at the end of the day thats what counts right? Enjoying the stories that do get produced. We aren't writing for kudos or points or anything... Were writing because you decided to set up a theme and some parameters and said "have at it yall". And it is fun.. As long as folks enjoyed it thats what counts right?

all of thats true anarch, but when we were an even smaller site we had more member contribution to these contests than we get now.
just gives the impression that most people dont care i reckon.
and for what its worth it seems to me to be a common theme lately.
but maybe im just a grumpy old prick, who knows.

Anyway, Mojo, I like the short story competitions here , despite the fact few people entered. Significantly more people read the submissions than entered themselves, judging from the comments in response. I suspect it you kept it up over time then sometimes we'd get more members entering... and perhaps sometimes less even, who knows. It strikes me that it's not a whole lot of effort to throw up a short story comp thread every so often. Hell, delegate it to someone else if you find it disappointing, I find it interesting writing to a brief of sorts. Also, considering only 3 members entered we've got quite a few stories up.
Annnnyway, works for me, worst place I can come is third. :P

dont get me wrong, i love writing stories, especially ones that other folk like reading, and i'd write them whether or not there was a comp. as you could probably tell if you had a look through this sub forum.
the contests are about more than just those of us who like to write and posting a few tales, it should engage everyone.
but hey, i am pissy atm and its rare that anyone agrees with me when im like this. :D

Sure, and I'm the same, I'd be writing regardless, but writing for something is always different to writing for yourself and just throwing it up on a forum. Although, if there was an active short stories/creative writing forum then I might agree with you more.
