I work out regularly and because of that, I'm always looking for other activities to add to my routine. I know learning how to swim is a good workout but I was wondering if it helped you gain muscle or if it just made you get more toned.

Yes I would say it does indeed build muscle, and is also a great cardio exercise.

yo. been there done that.
great calorie burner but heres the prob.
It will make you eat more, which in turn will pile more fat.
Unless your diet is fuckin strict and you swim all the time, you will see more fat start piling. Professional swimmers have to do other dry cardio to cut the fat.
To swim well, youtube Ferris & hydrodynamics.

Swimming is mostly a cardio workout. Yes, you can gain muscle mass, but you would need to swim a lot (and slowly) and take protein supplements because cardio tends to burn muscle along with fat. I'm afraid there's no way around it. If you want to gain muscle mass, you need to lift weights. If you find yourself unable to lift free-weights or use the gym machines for some reason or the other, you can try looking into 'weightless workouts'. These are weigh-lifting workouts without the iron; you use your own body weight.
The most well known of these is the standard push-up. Others include the indian-pushups (which is great for flexibility as well), chair dips and pull ups. Google for weightless workouts, I'm sure you'll find graphs describing how to do those and what muscle groups it will develop.
Also try to supplement your workout regime with flexing exercises. If you combine the muscle-building workouts with flexing and stretching, you can gain an additional 25% (according to my trainer) muscle mass. Even if you don't reach 25%, any additional muscle mass gain would be nice, wouldn't you think so?
Wall climbing is a good work out and if you are any good at it, your go upside down and over overhang's . . . your'll work your whole body, as you lifting your own weight . . . I love it, haven't got into it for a few years, you'll be spiderman :D

swimming is good. my stepdad started swimming, and he's trimmed down significantly. Probably added a lot of muscle and energy for the golf course.

Golfing can be great exercise in itself when you carry your own clubs.
