View Full Version : Strange ring in this steak

A few weeks ago I cut into a steak and found this strange ring inside. I was going to cube it up and marinate it before I grilled it for some hors d'œuvre's, but when I cut the london broil in half to start, I found this...

Too late, I ate the hell out of it. But I also marinated the hell out of it and then grilled the hell out of it. Fuckin weird though, I never saw no shit like that. I was thinking that it probably had something to do with the dye, but still, why the actual ring like that? I'm gonna watch for that again.

Maybe i'll bring these pics to the supermarket and ask the meat cutters.

Was the pic before or after the marinade?

Was wondering the same thing.

Looks like it was either the marinade or it was left to sit out too long after being cut in dirty air.

Not really, I cook everything on an electric burner or outside on a gas grill. All of the kitchen utilities here are out of order.

No, this is before the marinade. I bought it, put it in the fridge. The next day I took it out, slapped it on the cutting board, and got this on the first cut..

Obviously the utilities are working because you have electricity.

That house has gas heat, does it not?

The oven would appear to be gas operated and well maintained.

Fail. Electric is on to fire the oil burner to keep pipes from freezing. A nice toasty 55 degrees here. Gas stove disconnected, and gas oven is not even functional if it were, the door is busted on it, won't close. Oh, and the electric also fires the timed lights.

Except that it seems the house has heat, as there is no condensation on the windows. Since you've admitted the house uses gas, the heater is most likely gas powered. This would indicate that gas is still flowing to the residence.

The oven door is obviously closed, as evidenced in one of your pictures. It even has some nice hand towels dangling at a 90° angle perpendicular to the floor, indicating the oven door is closed properly.

So really the only thing stopping you from using the stove is your own laziness or ignorance.

Stop posting pictures. It ruins the grift you're working.

Grasping at straws Cog, grasping at straws. Why the fuck would I have bothered to say that the oven was broken if it weren't? After all, the gas is off anyway, and the tanks are gone. So really, what fucking difference would it make? You fail at critical thinking dipshit.

Really?

If the gas is off, the inside temperature should be the same as the outside temperature, which would mean that there would be condensation on the windows. There is none, which means the glass is considerably warmer than the outside air.

If the oven worked and the stove were easily repairable you would lose your whine about having to cook in the open air. Your being forced to do so is a claim you've made many, many times on these forums.

However once we get even the slightest little glimpse of your actual situation it doesn't look anywhere nearly as bad as you make it out to be. Strange, no?

Besides, having someone like you, who makes up their own evidence as they go along, tell me I fail at critical thinking is more of a compliment than an insult.

This is the continuing problem. You seem to think that you're version of reality is the only version there is to be found. I've not only been utterly destitute, I had a family to take care of at the same time. You see, I cannot have any impression of you that you did not provide for my consumption. It is for that exact reason that your situation as you described seems to be utter bullshit.

If you constantly contradict yourself as to the exact nature of your situation, that is hardly my problem. Although I'm starting to see that part of your issue is this Twilight Zone version of reality that you seem to choose to exist within.

That's okay. You'll come to face it for what it is or you won't, and either way it will not affect my existence in the least... beyond perhaps not having to read your moronic drivel anymore.

Contradict myself? I am very straightforward about my situation. More so in fact than most people would be in my situation. Again, it's your own problem that you are such a fuckin retard that you don't understand the fact that my situation changes from day to day. And therefore, something that was true yesterday, might not be my situation today. ONe day I might be sleeping in my car, the next in a motel room. One day I might not have any food, and the next I have a steak and a bottle of rum. If you were ever even close to the position I am in, I wouldn't have to explain that to you. You sir, are the liar. And a shittly little useless troll on top of that.

Well, this year is a hell of a lot better than last year. It is cold here now, but I do have shelter. It's not mine, and I might have to run out at any moment to avoid arrest, but it still beats the shit out of last year. I spent a few nights panhandling in front of gas staions in the middle of snowstorms trying to get up enough money for a motel room on a few nights last year. That sucks ass, believe me. As does living out of a car in general. I'm pretty comfy here though for the moment. I even got a little mattress out of an RV to sleep on. Being able to cook is aweoms too. I don't care if I never see another cold can of Chef Boyardee or vienna sausages again.

Anyway, point being, no matter where one is at, it is important to be thankful for things. That's not to say one should be content, and shouldn't bitch moan and complain about things that just aren't right. But you still have to appreciate what you do have.

Cheers

Given the pattern, the meat would have to have been irradiated after it was cut, meaning the equipment was present wherever it was butchered.

here you go Jack . . .:D

Red meat tends to change from a bright red color to brown or gray after being exposed to oxygen. This is a natural change in color but does not mean that the product isn't fresh or edible. The product is still safe and wholesome despite this change in color. As long as the meat was sold before the "Sell by" date the meat is considered safe to consume.

Signs of definite spoilage in meat products indicating that they should not be consumed include a strong spoilage odor, a slippery texture or packaging that has begun to bulge. Spoilage organisms may be hiding food borne illness pathogens that do not give off any obvious signs.

Holy fuckin sheep shit and shove me in it. Cog actually has something on topic to say, after how many pages of trolling? Must have ran out of Acupulco Gold too, he actually has a valid point to raise.

The local supermarket here doesn't really have a butcher like it used to. There's a few guys back there that ignore you if you ask for a cut, and do some packaging, but it looks like most of it is coming in pre-cut now.

Take the ground beef for example. If you get there early, you can snag some of the traditional looking packs of ground beef, store ground. But the bulk of what is on the shelf now are segments of what was one huge strip of ground beef that squirted out onto a conveyor or something. When that crap first came out they tried to sell us on these white tubs they were putting it in. Now they have gone back to more standard looking shrink wrap, but you can still its the same garbage meat. Even tastes different.

Look closer at the picture Lala.

Your article is totally true. In fact, these days you're better off if you can find a market that has brown meat on the shelf, you know its real meat.

But this has a ring, inside, under the surface. This isn't standard "aging" I don't think.

There's another supermarket I go to as well, that still has a real butcher counter. Their packaged meats go brown since they don't pump the meat full of chemicals to make it look like plastic express.

Most supermarkets dye their meat to keep it looking fresh. Beef in particular can sit on the shelf for days and still be bright red.

Really?

If the gas is off, the inside temperature should be the same as the outside temperature, which would mean that there would be condensation on the windows. There is none, which means the glass is considerably warmer than the outside air.

Erm Cog?

Last year, we moved from Texas to Missouri in late January. When we finally made it there, they had forecasted one nasty ice storm. We had electricity barely 6 hours after we were done moving all the shit from the van in the place. We were out of electricity for an entire week.

So I can say from experience that for one, even if the outside temps were in the 20's if not in the single digits, inside the not very well insulated place we had just moved in, the temperature was above 32F. Cold, humid and uncomfortable as hell but still, quite a few degrees warmer than the outside. Thank god for that!

Every single Kerosene heater were sold out which blew greatly but what can you expect in a town with a population of some 2500

As for condensation, right now, there is some in the kitchen window and we are heating like mad for it is quite cold outside here for being south Texas.

Cog is an idiot. Condensation on the window has as much to do with humidity as it does temperature differential. Not to mention the speed at which the differential occurs.

Irrelevant.

Condensation forms when the window glass is at a temperature below that at which the water vapor in the air will condense.

Given that it is winter, you are in New York State, and the photograph was taken at night, the outside temperature couldn't have exceeded 55°, if but by a few degrees.

That means the window has to be warm beyond a point at which condensation will occur, which means the inside of the house was being heated.

The requisite humidity would have been caused by you being in the kitchen for anything more than two minutes.

That means the window has to be warm beyond a point at which condensation will occur, which means the inside of the house was being heated.

The requisite humidity would have been caused by you being in the kitchen for anything more than two minutes.

Point of fact, I had just entered the kitchen. I turned on the light, opened the fridge, put the steak on the cuttingboard, sliced, and took the pictures after a single bisecting cut. But anyway, it's cold as hell out tonight, and there's still no condensation on the window.

Easy now, it was a nice try at making a relevant point. Your logic is sound but the actual circumstances were different enough that it matters.

Re-reading it I see how it comes off as snarky.

It's friday.

Sometimes, you have an odd way at phrasing stuff

Because the heat is on and the window is too warm, which was my point to begin with.

About the ring in the steak Jack, not sure what might have caused it beside a bad dye job... Not the first time I came across steaks like that and they were all good. I did smell the hell out of them before cooking them and consuming them.

Also, I've noticed several times in some ground chuck packages I got that it is all not on the red side, there are several brownish/greyish bits of ground chuck that missed the red dye #40 treatment.

None the less, they were all fresh and all past the smell test.

It's always fun to pick out every last detail from the most inane photographs.

Keeps the claws sharp.

I dont touch the thermostat, which is set at 55 degrees. Now the rest of the house is closed off, I confine myself to two rooms, so maybe that helps a little, I dunno. I burn candles when it gets really cold outside, like I am about to do now. When the furnace runs a cycle it brings it up a few degrees above 55. But Iv'e never seen the temp go above 65, even when the sun is coming in.

But since you seem to be the self-acclaimed expert here. How about you tell us at what temperature condensation occurs on the window.

Yeah, the brown doesn't scare me. Go by the dates and the smell. I just never saw a ring like this though. Thin red, up against a thin brown, to a thick red center. Odd.

It's not the temperature, it's the difference in temperature that is important. Condensation will form at nearly any temperature where water may take liquid form.

If the glass is the same temperature as the inside air, condensation is impossible. Why are you belaboring this? Read a science book.

Well there you go, you just said it yourself, temperature makes no difference. So what was your point again?

He thinks there should be condensation on the window. He has no idea what the fuck he is talking about. I have no idea what the outside temp was the night, and neither does he. Besides, he even said himself temp has nothing to do with it, so he is chasing his own tail.
