Massive storm buries central US in snow (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091209/ts_alt_afp/usweatherstorm_20091209221347)

I remember the northern midwest got dumped with snow last winter. Minneapolis dropped to -20 degrees and windchill in the -30s during the coldest.

A massive storm buried much of the central United States in dangerous ice and snow Wednesday, stranding scores of motorists with massive drifts that shut down major roads and defeated plows.

Strong winds created drifts as high as 15 feet (4.6 meters) as the storm dropped as much as four feet of snow (1.2 meters) in some areas, said Pat Slattery, a spokesman for the National Weather Service.

We had ridiculously strong winds today. Must have been 30-40mph at its strongest.

I could feel the wind coming through our window it was whipping so hard.

BTW: using wind chill to say that global warming is BS is shooting yourself in the foot skunk...

Wind is caused by uneven heating of the earth's surface...

Even though this is the warning they issued:

Statement as of 11:21 PM EST on December 09, 2009

... Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 4 PM EST Thursday...

Hazardous weather...

* as of 1120 PM intense bands of lake effect snow showers were
over the southwest portion of the state. It was impacting
travel on Interstate 196 between Holland and Benton Harbor.
These lake bands were also impacting U.S. 131 south of Grand
Rapids. 2 to 4 inches of snow has occurred since this afternoon
in these snow bands. Snowfall rates of greater than one inch
per hour will continue in this area. Elsewhere... the lake
effect snow showers were more scattered. However... pockets of
heavy snow showers were occurring along U.S. 31 from Hart to
Grand Haven and along Interstate 96 west of Grand Rapids. The
lake effect will continue to increase in coverage and intensity
through the overnight. Conditions will continue to worsen into
the overnight when blizzard conditions are likely. Additional
accumulations of 3 to 5 inches can be expected overnight with
locally higher amounts.

* West winds of 25 to 35 mph will gust up to 50 mph through
Thursday. These winds will cause considerable blowing and
drifting of snow. Visibilities will frequently be reduced to
near zero at times tonight into Thursday.

* Gusty winds along with rapidly falling temperatures will
produce sub zero wind chills by daybreak Thursday.

* Expect additional snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches through
Thursday afternoon.

Impacts...

* travel will be most severely impacted late tonight as snow...
blowing snow... and rapidly falling temperatures occur.
Blizzard conditions are expected throughout the overnight
hours... especially along U.S. Highway 131.

* Power outages will be possible tonight into Thursday morning
due to the strong gusty winds.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

* it would be best not to travel tonight through Thursday.

* If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and
water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

This remains (so far) as one of the wussiest blizzards I've seen in a long time...

North of NYC here. Nice snow last night, real pretty. More than forecast. A bit of ice rain, then some misty rain today. Made it really wet and sloppy, but still a lot of snow on the deck. Tonight got pretty cold. Lots of black ice out there in the roads.

Not what I would really call abnormal though. But then again, hard to say what is normal around here anymore. One year we got a blizzard on turkey day. This year I was out in a t-shirt. Some years we get a fuckload of snow, some years, some rain and not much else.
