I'd highly recommend this book (http://www.amazon.com/Decoding-Design-Understanding-Symbols-Communication/dp/1581809697/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201204633&sr=1-1).

It is a study of the fundamentals of symbolic communication from the perspective of modern graphic design.

Most books like this one (http://www.amazon.com/Magicians-Companion-Practical-Encyclopedic-Llewellyns/dp/0875428681) are much better constructed and far more in-depth than that which you posted.

Many of the most detailed and "authentic" alchemic texts are illuminated manuscripts that employ a symbology that isn't covered in that PDF.

I am a strong believer that people aught not to trust anything but intuition when interpreting any sort of symbolic language.

I also believe that, with the right intuition, the right person does not need the rituals, nor sigils, nor charms, nor spells, nor any fancy things. A wooden branch from a tree could be your magic staff. The shaman needs nothing other than his imagination, combined with a pure head!

Levi said something similar. Imperfection is perfection.

Wait til your head starts to turn into a psychedelic time machine.

The Gods are probably gunna hate me for messing up their exclusive clique.

But it's anyone and everyone's show. Quit your job and start a riot. But first.... have a long conversation in gibberish with a wall, mash your face into a mirror and squeal while rolling your eyes into your head, induce several mental breakdowns in a row, and constantly deny yourself in order to destroy your ego.

Learn to listen to the furry creatures. I'd let a dog rule the world sooner than even the wisest human.

Oh.... ELPHIAS LEVI!!! Read his stuff, don't analyze it at all because to do so on the first try would be next to impossible unless you were Levi himself in the flesh, just soak it in.... and then explode afterwards.

It's a rabbit hole, for sure.

The term "hermetics" comes from the name pen name of the author of the original works: Hermes Trismegistus. The books of Hermes (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0521425433) originated from the Egypt in the first few centuries AD. The most famous of these is called the "Emerald Tablet". It is rumored to be a translation of the hieroglyphs inscribed upon the alter at which Plato was initiated into the Egyptian mysteries.

The most famous translation is the following:

This is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth:-
As below, so above; and as above so below. With this knowledge alone you may work miracles.
And since all things exist in and eminate from the ONE Who is the ultimate Cause, so all things are born after their kind from this ONE.
The Sun is the father, the Moon the mother;
the wind carried it in his belly. Earth is its nurse and its guardian.
It is the Father of all things,
the eternal Will is contained in it.
Here, on earth, its strength, its power remain one and undivded.
Earth must be separated from fire, the subtle from the dense, gently with unremitting care.
It arises from the earth and descends from heaven; it gathers to itself the strength of things above and things below.
By means of this one thing all the glory of the world shall be yours and all obscurity flee from you.
It is power, strong with the strength of all power, for it will penetrate all mysteries and dispel all ignorance.
By it the world was created.
From it are born manifold wonders, the means to achieving which are here given
It is for this reason that I am called Hermes Trismegistus; for I possess the three essentials of the philosophy of the universe.
This is is the sum total of the work of the Sun.

The inspiration for Hermes' works is said to be the Book of Causes, a work whose true authorship shares equal mystery. It's basically a logical exercise in Platonism, however the conclusions drawn from the book are supported by the cutting edges of both psychology and physics. It was such an important book in Renaissance education that one could not graduate from a university without having studied it.

It is, for all practical purposes, a waystation of inspiration for the trains of thought that have lead to the development of modern Western society.

You brush your teeth in a particular way with a familiar toothpaste. You wear clothes that appeal to your sense of aesthetics. You masturbate a particular way. You comb your hair in a way truly unique to the placement of the hairs upon your head. You stop at stop lights and go at green lights. You always turn the doorknob before pushing the door.

Your entire life is comprised of little more than thousands of rituals designed to make your life understandable and functional. You perform ritual every day that "summons" who you are.

Use different tools in those rituals, add new ones, or remove some, and you get different "effects" in your life.

Change that ritual, change who you are, and change your reality.

Such is true in all things within the Western mystery schools: there is no affecting the universe without affecting yourself, for you are one in the same.

To expound any more runs the risk of simply measuring of the extent of your success or the efficacy of your process.

That's how people end up with mercury poisoning or any other one of a variety of ailments possible when fucking around with toxic chemicals without understanding.

This is no more esoteric as the alchemic image I posted earlier. It's simply a different language describing similar circumstances.

Spheres within spheres and without spheres... just spheres being spherical, perhaps being spiral, expanding and contracting geometry, and don't forget the squeakymonsters, the spaghetti man, the psychedelic praying ninjas, the sunshine and the pineapple express....
