The free and independent Internet is at risk, from an unexpected threat positioned as protection of "online privacy," which may end up as no more than giving unfair advantage to major media corporations. U.S. Congressman Rich Boucher (southwestern Virginia) is spearheading legislation couched as privacy protection which may result in the elimination of thousands upon thousands of small independent websites, including AboveTopSecret.com.
Boucher, who is chair of the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet (and who is backed by a long-list of big-media dollars) is proposing legislation that will effectively eliminate third-party ad networks as an option for small to mid-sized websites. Our contacts in the industry fear that, due to his hotly contested re-election efforts, the proposed legislation will reach the house floor before the end of the year.
The essence of his proposal is to require websites such as ATS to first ask your permission before using any third-party cookies. This would mean that sites like us could not display third-party ad networks until you opt-in with your approval. The end result would be a significant, if not complete, drop in the only source of revenue for small independent websites.

I hate ATS as much as the next guy, but I still dont like this shit the government is pulling. We dont need any more fuckin laws, period. And ATS is not the only webstire running a third-party ad stream. If you set up a Google website, you can opt-in for such an option to help generate a little revenue.
I just don't see why no third parties cookie means the end of anything good. I really don't care but it do think that ads are not always a good thing.

Opt-in is fine. I could see sites like ATS will just change the membership TOS to include wording for the acceptance of the ads: accept that for your membership and you accept it all.
What you'll see are sites like ATS that remove all free content and spam ads only to members.
Attribution of content will be come a full-contact sport as those with a message to sell (Fox News, ATS, et al) go head-to-head in order to protect the even more vital ad dollar.
If I have to pay for it it isn't knowledge, it's opinion. I have plenty of those already, thanks.

Well first ATS is not a news outlet, we a discussion website, we discuss news which is found on Other news sites. So for a company like CNN to run an ATS story is a bit redundant.
And the formula works great, when we have members who are actively engaged in making the content available. I've simply seen a lack of it lately.

I'm surprised my post wasn't trashed. AshelD said in a post, ATS wasn't the constitution / Bill of Rights but a private website; i think the Bill of Rights is a perfect description of their totalitarian manifesto.
Any member discussing, promoting, or otherwise alluding to personal recreational use of drugs in this forum will be immediately banned from ATS without warning.
It's seems okay to post drug stories by proxy, so might just invent a drugged up family member with needles sticking out of their arms, to see what boundaries exist.
