View Full Version : Post apocalyptic thoughts

I was playing Fallout Tactics the other day, and it got me thinking about the face of a post apocalyptic world. So I thought it might be fun for us to enter our thoughts and expertise on what the world might or might not look like.
I don't have any big ground breaking revelation here. But one thing that has stuck in my mind is vehicular transportation. Now in Mad Max fahsion, most people think of fuel as being the end all be all when it comes to motorized transport, and of course electricla power for settlemets/communities.
Now I think that powering generators may not be all that difficult. But vehicles on the other hand, require more than just fuel. I think that within a few years of an apocalyptic event, we would realize that fuel was not so much the problem, as rubber. Leave a car sitting for a few years, and everything can be tooled back up pretty much, except for the rubber components. Tires, hoses, belts. Does anyone here have the skillset to fabricate replacements for those parts which deteriorate most rapidly? Hoses and belts really do require pretty specific specs to function. You're not going to be able to simply salvage such parts, as they will all be dry-rotting.
Any thoughts on how to remedy that?
And of course, feel free to rample with your own contemplations of the face of the post-apocalyptic world as well.

Post apocalyptic world, eh? Well, first, you don't carry anything that doesn't fit into a backpack. The extra weight will, well, weigh you down and make you less mobile. Automobiles, motorcycles etc won't work. After a while, gasoline stops working and you're stuck with a 2 ton paper-weight. Plus, roads will likely be useless 10 years after the 'fallout'. I say, vehicle-wise, go with a bicycle. They're easy to repair, relatively quick, and will keep you in shape.
Aside from the vehicles, obviously canned food is a must. But don't be one of those retards who stocks up and never leaves the house. Your house will be raided and your stockpiles will be taken. The key here is to be mobile. Make sure you've got enough to survive several weeks on hand (survive, not gorge or be comfortable). Always be on the lookout for new supplies of food. When canned food is gone, look for what wildlife is left and EAT IT!
Have a knife, machete and a few other items onhand. You'll be hacking your way through jungle before long. That is, unless you're dealing with a Fallout-like situation, in which case, no need to hack, but the melee weapon is nice. Here's a tip. Read the zombie survival guide and apply it. Most of the stuff in there will work, sans zombies.

Rosobasi, canned food is no more useful than a vehicle with dry rotting rubber, and even less useful than roads. And as far as roads go, they will obviously deteriorate, but with dirt bikes and 4x4's they would still be better than cross country in a lot of areas for 10-20 years.

Distilling water is fairly easy. So long as you have water to distill and the time to do it without being attacked by raiders.

Vehicles in general would be a waste of time because of road conditions: they would be unusable within 5 years.
Although, truth be told, my plan is to round up as many college freshman co-eds as possible and start a rape zoo for fun and profit.

That's a pretty scary thought, rape would be rampant I would bet. Without law, how many of us males would truly deny ourself that indulgence?

You may have a point.

The suffering is far more exquisite this way.

Century, that is a pretty badass pic. But the vehicle is a fail. Your steering might as welll be on ice. And you failed to answer how the belts will work, or the coolant will be delivered.

Good for a movie, sucky for real. Those front wheels alone are a Greek tragedy. And you still have not solved the original proplemI outlined in the OP. Who got the rubber? If you got no tires, you got no belts or coolant.

Get you a monster truck engine you could turn those tracks with a shaft and axle.
For visibility you need the GPS and small laptop computer.

Steel will last a lot longer than rubber. There is an old stell RR bridge form the 1800's that is in use once again, after being dormant after a fire in the 70's. Awesome walk across the Hudson.

I still say a bicycle will work the best. Get some spare tires and tubes, and you're good for a while. They fit in a backpack, too.
As for water in the post-apocalyptic... if we're not dealing with radiation, then purification tablets will work fine, as well as a good boiling system. If the water is irradiated, you'll just be screwed. Or just get some Project Purity shit going.

Bicycle probably isn't such a bad idea in some areas. Quiet for one thing, gets in and out of a lot of nifty places that a car can't go or would attract attention. But for as long as there are tires and inner tubes for bikes, we would still have tires and belts for cars too.
Water purification tablets might be hard to come by, but bleach would probably be pretty handy for some time. Boiling is the method I would use whenever possible.
The best thing to do about radioation is avoid it altogether, of course. Move on to somewhere else where the water idn't irradiated.
