If you have access to the location: don't guess, go measure it. You don't need any more complex surveying tools as was available in the 18th century.

You'll need:
* 2 wooden dowels exactly 6 ft tall (about $2.50 each in any hardware store)
* 2 water levels (about $0.99 each in any hardware store)
* Bright orange paint or marker
* A protractor with a hole in the straight edge (a paper printout works fine, too)

* A nail
* Some tape
* A friend

Construction
Take one of the wooden dowels and color one end for about 6" with the bright color paint.

Stick the nail through the hole in the protractor, then sit the nail on top of the other dowel and tape it down. The protractor should be able to swing freely, with the curved portion hanging downwards. If you're using a paper protractor, you'll probably want to reinforce it with some cardboard backing.

Now get the rest of your stuff and head out.

Calibration and Use
Stand at what you perceive is the "bottom" of the incline, and hold upright the dowel with the protractor attached, and use one of the water levels to make sure it is perfectly vertical. Have your friend take the dowel with the orange tip and go to the "top" of the incline.

Use the water level again, but this time turn it horizontal so you can use it to level the protractor to zero degrees. Stare down the line of the protractor towards the orange tipped dowel, and slowly rotate it until you are no longer able to see the tip of the dowel. Read the angle on the protractor and write it down.

Do the process three or four times at a few different positions, noting the angle indicated on the protractor each time, and average the values together.

Doing this you can determine the angle of incline or decline independent of any visual illusions created by the surrounding terrain, and do so for around $10.

There is most likely a small downhill incline that give the vehicle sone momentum that carries it over the tracks.

Just take a 8ft 2x4 and a two foot level. Set the 2x4 in several places when checking. The long board will help level out minor ripples. measure the height of the gap between level and board when the level bubble is centered. That's the rise over 2 foot or 1/2 of it over 1 foot.

I also videoed a ball on the road. At first it went no where. Then I gave it a nudge. And then it went along on its merry way at a slow speed suggesting the reason for the season is a down slope.

But yeah it does go up at the very end.... But as I said...if you apply the brake you will not regain the momentum needed to make it over...
