What do you hate about the new forum?

Honesty time. Of course the work put into the forum so far is appreciated, it's quite an undertaking.

A lot of the features that were added are just fluff, so the Arcade and Video section really aren't all that bothersome beyond the link clutter.

Now that most of the major kinks are ironed out (kinda), I want to talk about a little fine tuning.


Rep and stars: Can we just turn it off and have conversations without having the need to log some sort of electronic high-five? I thought the smite system was stupid before but no one cared then. New software, new possibilities.

Live threads: as fun as it is, it doesn't work right half the time if a number of people are contributing. A user option to turn it off would be brilliant.

Chat: Live threads don't cut it. Bring back AJAX chat. The old software works with vBulletin.

The FAQ is helpful again after all that work mojo put into it.

Less complicated navigation. There's so much shit that simple things that people do get utterly lost. A skin with just access to the forums, UCP and recent activity would be a godsend.
Minimum character rules. Fuck that.

I just carn't do any thing . . which I'm sure will make a lot happy so why worry, carn't post pic, carn't stick smile where I like, carn't find quote boxes, or off site, find the lay out hard to work out were thing are, sure time will heal . . . but not knocking you guy just finding it to be a pain for me . . . some of us just type you know, and only with a couple of fingers . . . I think it was a miracle that I got my avatar up with no help, The mighty lala did it ha ha ha . . . simple is best for most traffic imo . . . [smile]

I'll have to see about making it a user option... as it stands now, its part of the reason the board is so much faster... (it doesn't write to the sql 1/2 as much... one of the big reasons I was excited about it :P) but i'll have to check how to make it a user option to shut it off... but I think you'll like that even less... The old chat from phpbb3 was the reason our DB was so huge... it logged every chat... without expiration or cleanup... I took out almost 30 mb of chat crap before I imported the database... A chat is an option... but we were kind of rushed into this whole ordeal due to hostgator being a bunch of chumps...

Working on getting what we've got working correctly before I start adding new things though...

All the other threads were regarding "I can't do this" or "I can't find that". This is just one thread of straight bitching to keep it unrelated to individual issues.

For instance, when you say "lots of members like the rep"... who would that be? Would that be "most admins" or "most of the community"? I'd wager that most of the community doesn't have an opinion one way or the other, and the decision to include or exclude those features are purely an arbitrary admin decision.

How are you going to know what we, the community, want unless we say so?

This thread reduces the guessing game.

Instead of getting your panties in a twist about all these demands on your time and attention, a better response would be a list of outstanding changes that are pending which you update as they are tackled. Maybe even prioritize them so there's some sort of level of expectation that is set.

Maybe then people will stop bitching about shit being lost or not working right because they know you're on it.

Cog: Not complaining about the thread... I tried to start up a few similar ones of my own... but its futile... people just click, and post... without reading anything or checking to see if something has already been addressed... then the thread gets derailed and becomes the standard amkon meandering mess with no direction... until someone posts another problem...

I thought about making a thread where I would delete repeat questions, mark stuff as 'done' and all that jazz... but I can just imagine the screams when people start thinking I'm censoring them, or refusing to acknowlege their question...

the rep thing doesn't really bother me one way or another. its fluff but it can be kinda fun. if most members don't care for it it's probably easy enough to turn off. (low priority)
i agree that it would be good to have a chat room back, live topic isn't the same as having a chat room for shooting the breeze. (medium priority).
i agree it seems a lot more complicated to navigate around, its taking me quite a bit of time to work out all the bits and pieces and personally i don't believe we need every option there is. i'd like to see it all simplified. (priority....ongoing depending on member input)

i think all in all it's a better board than the previous though i do miss the simplicity of the old one.
and while its true that we (admins) do make some decisions without member input for the most part the admins reflect a fairly good cross section of the board as a whole.
we often disagree and if it gets to the point that we can't unanimously agree on the correct course of action we will request member input.
much of the decision making so far is either of a technical nature or for basic forum "character". decisions that don't require any member input otherwisee we'd have 200 page threads arguing about banalities.

having said that, i agree with most of your points and we will, when time allows seek out contributions from everyone on the look and feel of the site.

nothing wrong with the thread cog, and perhaps we haven't communicated where we are at well enough with the members.
what we want to end up with is something that everyone likes, it may need some compromise on certain features because we all have different perspectives.

bear with us, you can be sure that we are doing our best to get the place back to "normal" (thats an oxymoron if ever there was one).

@lala, don't fret, i'm still having a hard time navigating around as well. the stuff you are talking about is on the agenda to be fixed, basically adding icons to the message reply page. pack is aware of what needs doing but he's a bit shagged.
little bit of patience is all thats needed and you'll soon find those little things getting fixed as each day goes by.

i've told pack that imo it's better to take a bit longer and get things right the first time than to rush around and do everything 3 times until you get it right.

All in all, any complaints I have are minor. I think we all have a certain resistance to change as well. You get used to something and even if it is flawed in one way or another, you are used to it. But this new board is pretty cool. And of course, I still like how things are run here.

We use 70% ground turkey, 30%
ground beef.

Spread the meat about 1/4' thick
on the wax paper.

Lay on the pastrami and cheese.

Roll it up, using the wax paper.
(do NOT roll the wax paper inside)

Cook like a meatloaf.
