[offsite:1ujnzprm]At least 38 people have died in some of the worst snows to hit northern China in decades, state media says.

The most fatalities occurred in Shanxi province where nearly 500 traffic accidents left 24 people dead and 70 injured when heavy snowfall pummelled the region this week, the China News Service said.

Officials have said the two storms in Beijing were artificially induced, sparking anger among residents. The extent of the weather manipulation efforts remains unclear.

In some places this week's snowstorms were the biggest in up to 60 years, leaving up to one million people in need of some form of disaster assistance, the report said.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao visited Hebei province and ordered stepped up efforts after six people in the province were killed due to the snow, including three children crushed when a school roof collapsed, it said.

Five others were reported dead in building cave-ins in Shaanxi province, while the other known fatalities occurred in Shandong province and the Ningxia region, it said.

The unusual amount of snow led to partial and full closures at airports in Beijing, Taiyuan, Xian, Shijiazhuang and other smaller cities, resulting in the cancellation or delay of hundreds of flights during the week, reports said.

Major highways in north China have been closed, leaving at least 10,000 vehicles and up to 30,000 people stranded on roads in Shanxi alone, they said.

The snows have also snarled train traffic, with delays leaving at least 20,000 people sleeping in Beijing's West Station overnight Thursday, the Beijing News said.

State television said the storms had tapered off Friday, with road, rail and air traffic mostly returning to normal.

for all China's advances(?) the bulk of the pop are still in the stone-age....poor bastards

weather that may cause us to "get the washing in"...has the abillity to wipe out entire villages where the state of and quality of their buildings leave a lot to be desired, to say the least.....at least they have that as a defence as to why they are playing roulette with nature.....but those god-bothering nuts from the US bible-belt are another story all together, they have the choice to re-locate

The only thing that kept going through my mind while reading this article was "Beijing Butterfly".

Fucking around with the weather given our level of understanding of its long-term processes is simply unwise, to say the least.

especially on a major scale which causes severe adverse effects over major population centres.

a recipe for disaster. although they were probably intentionally testing it that way for all we know.

they seem to be good at it alright, bad luck if your valley is required for a hydro lake to support a new dam.....and to hell with any community unfortunate enough to be relying on the natural water-courses of the areas.......time to pause and appreciate what we got a?

i was just thinking the same thing in a slightly different context though.

live in a drought?

spray some stuff in the air, cause major rainfall to fill your damns during the drought, catch major rainfall... the water would surely be contaminated with whatever you sprayed? (at least to some degree)

contaminates then spread and dilute through what was originally a relatively clean water source.

just speculating the end result... :|

wonder how many 10,000 litre water tanks you would get for the price of just one "bunker-buster"

our gubmint has some pretty good shit going on at the moment in that regard.

big discounts on rainwater tanks and solar hot water, free roof insulation up to $2k (which we just signed for at the door and it was done)
i think theres a few other schemes like that and its all about trying to reduce energy consumption and save water, all smart long term investments.

I never stop singing that song......we are so lucky over here to have the option of living and/or working in Oz.....big coin and great conditions, one of the few countries Ive seen where the gap between the "classes" ( the opportunities) are almost imperceptable

The land-rights issue is a problem I guess.......would be good to see an end to all that drama
