President Barack Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency and empowered his health secretary to suspend federal requirements and speed treatment for thousands of infected people.
The declaration that Obama signed late Friday authorized Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to bypass federal rules so health officials can respond more quickly to the outbreak, which has killed more than 1,000 people in the United States.
The goal is to remove bureaucratic roadblocks and make it easier for sick people to seek treatment and medical providers to provide it immediately. That could mean fewer hurdles involving Medicare, Medicaid or health privacy regulations.
"As a nation, we have prepared at all levels of government, and as individuals and communities, taking unprecedented steps to counter the emerging pandemic," Mr. Obama wrote in the declaration, which the White House announced Saturday.
He said the pandemic keeps evolving, the rates of illness are rising rapidly in many areas and there's a potential "to overburden health care resources."
Because of vaccine production delays, the government has backed off initial, optimistic estimates that as many as 120 million doses would be available by mid-October.
As of Wednesday, only 11 million doses had been shipped to health departments, doctor's offices and other providers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said.
The government now hopes to have about 50 million doses of swine flu vaccine out by mid-November and 150 million in December.
The flu virus has to be grown in chicken eggs, and the yield hasn't been as high as was initially hoped, officials explained.
Swine flu is more widespread now than it's ever been. Health authorities say almost 100 children have died from the flu, known as H1N1, and 46 states now have widespread flu activity.
Worldwide, more than 5,000 people have reportedly died from swine flu since it emerged this year and developed into a global epidemic, the World Health Organization said Friday. Since most countries have stopped counting individual swine flu cases, the figure is considered an underestimate.

I used to hate em... now after "the gauntlet" in basic...
I don't have problems...
shitload of shots all within a few seconds of each other ...
Never had a problem getting blood drawn though... until a nurse a few years ago blew out the veins on both arms...
was sore for days... hurt like a motherfuck...
Now, Shots = ezmode... blood draw/donations = heebie jeebies.

Who cares what you do? But if I were you I'd certainly think about advising your kid consider taking the shot- just as I've advised my own. This thing is dangerous for kids- more dangerous than the vaccine, in my opinion.

There's already something creepy about a needle going into your skin pumping your system full of things you can not see. What's creepier is when the vaccine is pushed upon you. Government wants Universal healthcare.

Short term outcome.
Government will be praised for their efforts for saving lives. This will in turn provide stronger support for government run healthcare. THose who died without taking the vaccine will have news stories that will cycle the media to scare more people to get the shot.
Long-term.
YEars later, all the junk in the vaccine will show it's ugly face and be the number 1 cause of death in the US by 2019. By this time, no one will remember why and who told them to take the vaccination years back, they will only know they got hoodwinked. Just like reporting your communist neighbor, just like vietnam, just like Iraq. Medical treatments from the problems that will arise will be affordable and a waste of time and money. It will nickle and dime the victims and the family members.

However, I don't believe the vaccine is some evil plot to cull the population.
I don't plan on seeking out the vaccine, but I don't have any issues with my kids getting it either.

You got me, I stand corrected....people do die from vaccines.but that can be said of damned near everything- from water to bullets. people die in all sorts of unsuspected ways. a reasonable man weighs the risks against the benefits. and in this instance the risks are small and the benefits large. conspiracy theory is a great danger to those who would make it an ideology.

The dentists don't use mercury in the teeth anymore. Haven't for quite some time now.

which is why it isn't given to kids under 12 here (the vaccine that is), not sure about any age restrictions you may have in the US.
