Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin has a message for Microsoft: he wants the software giant to stop attacking Linux. Zemlin contends that Microsoft is engaged in a covert war against the open source operating system and that the company's hostile behavior is detrimental to the growing number of Microsoft customers who deploy mixed Windows and Linux environments.

Zemlin's comments about Microsoft are a response to a patent auction carried out by Microsoft to sell a number of patents that the company allegedly said were related to Linux. The patents, which were originally obtained by Microsoft from SGI, were sold to Allied Security Trust (AST), a patent-holding group that grants its members perpetual licenses before reselling the patents.

Zemlin suggests that Microsoft's intention was to surreptitiously slip the intellectual property to a patent troll that would then go after Linux companies. This tactic would allow Microsoft to launch an indirect assault against the open source operating system while largely insulating the company from retaliatory patent litigation by The Open Invention Network (OIN), a patent-holding group that uses its intellectual property portfolio to protect Linux. Zemlin says that the plot was thwarted, however, because "Microsoft got caught."

Sheer bullshit man... Linux controls a very very tiny portion of the desktop OS market... Why is Microsoft getting worried? They still have over 80% marketshare...

These guys have a sickening amount of lobbyists working for them... they've got major pull... is it really necessary to try and squash an OS with 4.1% marketshare in Aug 09? (Beat out by Mac, who had 6.1%, and of course, Microsoft coming in at 89.3%...)

Seriously thinking of Deleting windows tonight and installing linux as my sole OS... Fuck dual boot...

Fuck Microsoft.

lol nah man, seriously... its fucked up...

Microsoft is kinda imperialistic...

They need to be dismantled.

and there are plenty of Linux users prepared to help that along lol

I build PC's for people... I always push linux of Windows... Fuck Microsoft...

You should really give it a shot though lex... its stable, and doesn't take half of the system resources that Windows does...

Hell, you can even run it off a CD without installing shit on your system...

Oh, the best part... Its fuckin' free...

I see the Gatesian Borg giving way to the Google Borg- which is far worse. Google is nothing more than spyware trojan in a pretty package. Linux may indeed be the last hope for a free cyberspace.

I'm looking to see what linux distro I'm going to switch to...

But yah... Microsoft pissed me off with that last move...

I've hated them for years... now, I'll boycott.

OMG are you kidding... really? Here's some patronizing comments of my own.

This is the single stupidest thing that has ever come out of the Linux community. This is a perfect example of why geeks should be geeks and not try to run businesses or organizations... they don't understand anything beyond the technology. This is not some penis competition from the perspective of Linux. They have a good product, it is free, it is widely supported and it is still the #1 server operating system on the internet. It runs more PCs in the developing world, including pirated copies of Windows XP.

Microsoft owns the patents to the technology... so what? The technology in question has been within the public sphere for so long that the only thing that holding that patent does is prevent anyone else from claiming they invented it. It means nothing to any current or future Linux development and never did.

"Microsoft got caught" my ass... more like "Zemlin doesn't have a clue."

I installed linux and windows 7 on a friend's computer, on separate partitions so that he can still use his xp if he wants to. He tells me when he's running linux, the laptop doesn't run as hot as if it's running on xp or win7. Whatever that actually signifies, on a fundamental level it does mean lower resource consumption via lower heat waste.

Actually, Microsoft's aquisition of some patents from Novell give Microsoft some semi-legit claims to Linux... thats the whole deal...

Linux isn't a product... its an operating system, sure, but not a product...

In fact, all companies that sell linux distros are required to offer open source versions as well... Thus, red hat (commercial) and Fedora (open source)... same goes for SuSE and OpenSuSE...

Open Source is the best thing to happen to computers... Its a decent premise, and a fairly admirable business model... (many times you have the software for free, but purchase support... other times, its all about donations).

Technology be damned... This is microsoft fighting against the open source model.. they've been doing it for years...

Microsoft has recently been emboldened by Apple's legal battle to get Operating systems covered by the DMCA. If apple wins that battle, and it becomes Illegal for software to be used in any manner not originally intended by the programmer, than Microsoft could potentially cripple the linux community...

On 2nd November 2006, Novell and Microsoft announced a joint patent agreement to cover their respective products.[8][9] They also promised to work more closely together, in order to improve their software’s ability to work with other software, setting up a joint research facility to do this. Leaders from both companies purportedly hope this will lead to better compatibility between Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org and better virtualization techniques.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said of the deal, “This set of agreements will really help bridge the divide between open-source and proprietary source software.”[10]

The deal involves upfront payment of $348 million from Microsoft to Novell for patent cooperation and SLES subscription. Novell will pay around $40 million to Microsoft over 5 years.[11]

One of the first results of this partnership was that Novell adapted the OpenXML/ODF Translator for use in OpenOffice.org.[12]

Yah, from wiki, but its a "gist" type thing...

Anyway, With microsoft having some rights over Novell's patents, it could spell problems not just for linux, but for Openoffice... which is the newest rival to Microsoft's Office...

Microsoft, if successful, could nearly end the Open Source movement, or at least set it back a good decade...

Yup... which is a double edged sword...

The hotter it gets, the slower it will run... computers don't like heat...

Depending on which Linux distro you're using, you can reduce system resource usage by a huge amount...

I have a full operating system (backtrack3) on a 2g thumb drive... The operating system itself is only 700 meg or so...

compare to about 15 Gig of Windows Vista... and thats just the raw Operating system... Backtrack comes with over 100 different networking Pen testing tools...

and, talk about fast... when the entire OS and all of its programs are loaded into system ram... its about as fast as it can get...

Most nerd rage is born from a distinct lack of sexual activity involving another person.

The open source community could use a couple of hookers.

Speaking of nerd-dom...

After I decided to ditch all that is microsoft last night... I installed linux...

But, like a tard, didn't realize that my main HD is SATA, and the 500gb backup/storage HD that I was going to use for Linux is actually IDE...

Apparently my bios is incapable of letting me use an IDE HD for booting if I have a SATA hooked up...

So, my computer just boots to Grub error 21 lol

Fun shit... Should probably be fixing it... setting up partitions and the likes right now... but, alas, I got shit to do, and i'm not really "feeling it" right now... so I"m just running a live CD lol

I got a linux distro on a thumb drive on my keychain too... so I'll be good till I decide to fix the damn Grub loader...

Fuck Microsoft... I'll be rid of MS soon...
