just curious as to whether or not this is real, or bungled somehow.
Oh wait, it mentions Lear. Well shit, that kind of answers my question.
well, I looked at what was on the front page. what a load of shit. Anyhow, I thought the image was rather neat. Mars with a blue Sky!

We've done this quite a few times before. I'm sure a search of the forums will give you what you seek.
Basically, they sent a color calibration wheel up with the Mars rovers. Each of these pictures with a blue sky requires modification of the color spectrum of the images beyond that which is dictated by those color calibration targets mounted on the rover.
I could make the sky look green (and I think I did that once in some thread, too) but that doesn't mean that it is anything close to reality.
The mystery is that there is some color corruption of the images released by NASA, however that corruption is towards the yellow/green color range and not towards the red. The corruption itself is so minimal that the sky still looks pinkish-red.

I found some of the latest images a few days back....they are very light on description......the quotes are from c-net
http://news.cnet.com/2300-11386_3-10001494-12.html?tag=mncol
This full HiRise image puts the cryptic terrain in a larger context, not that it helps us lay folk very much.
Mars2CrypticLong.jpg[/attachment:16l7d00h]
NASA says "interesting SHARAD feature." To which we might reply "spooky, even."
Sharad, by the way, stands for "shallow subsurface radar." One of six science instruments on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter along with the HiRise camera, it uses radar waves within a 15- to 25-megahertz frequency band to penetrate up to 1 kilometer into the crust of Mars in the hunt for liquid or frozen water. We're not sure why a Sharad image is included with the HiRise pictures, but we like it anyway.
Mars2Sharad.jpg[/attachment:16l7d00h]
Once again, NASA's caption--"Seasonal Haloes and Fractal Patterns"--leaves much unsaid, and much to the imagination.
looks more like Callisto?

Seen on Mars...
WASHINGTON -- Noted space visionary and writer, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, believes that new images of Mars clearly show the red planet dotted with patches of vegetation, including trees. Such a find may help spark a far grander space program more aligned with the adventure and exploration portrayed in the epic film, 2001: A Space Odyssey - the collaborative work of both Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick.

....I agree, if it turns out John was right, and its all faked, I would still enjoy the tech involved and the time Ive spent with other like minded folk grovelling through it all.......until I am being lowered onto the surface of Mars, I will always have my doubts, and if for no other reason than I believe NASA has been telling fibs regards other matters, its very normal to question everything said once its known the source has lied before......I have a cool old book "THE EXPLORATION OF MARS" pub 1956 by Willy Ley, Werner Von Braun ,with Bonnestell, I graphic plates .....it is kind of sci-fi I guess as it was written a long time back......but of course these guys ,Ley and Von Braun were leaders in their fields,.......they make some very cryptic comments regard the Moon and Mars, I like reading "old data"...if for no other reson than the Beaver hates it
srsly, there was no WWW or that sort of thing back then, no Moon -shot to defend, these guys talked in a very open way about their ideas, nothing censored as such.......and although they could be said to be simply "musing" the possibillities
of certain things, they were not frivilous in their thoughts......they always had a scientific basis behind it.....love it 8)

Exactly.
Check the scale of that pic and then check the height of those alleged "trees".
Damn I wish I could remember where all this information was....
If I remember correctly, based on the scale of those images those trees would be nearly 500ft tall with some having canopies nearly 1/4 mile in diameter.

Anyone who's ever hiked through Sequoia National Forest understands that trees can grow pretty damned big.
its very normal to question everything said once its known the source has lied beforeAn excellent and timely point given the hoax foodfight of the last few days.
Hoax's/Lies serve their purpose, they always have.
KIWI's point shows that only too well.
" once its known the source has lied before"
If the source had not been caught out in a lie their devout followers would continue to believe everything those charlatans have to say, the field of CT would be an even greater clusterfuck.
A Hoax can be used to expose the crooks, liars and just plain greedy and damage their standing amongst devotee's.
Tearing a hoax to shreds, by the very people it's meant to deceive, improves the image of those within the field. Cleaning their own backyard so to speak.
From the very earliest time in our rise from hairy knuckled sapiens we have engaged in distortions, lies and subterfuge, many of which have sped our progress in one way or another.
All things, black and white, yin and yang, good or evil, serve a purpose in the greater scheme of things and to deny this is merely burying your head in the sand.
And thank god for arthur c clarke, never mind his faults, if it weren't for him i would never have taken an interest in science, space, archaelogy or ct, and nor would thousands of others i imagine.

Im more tolerant of individuals and small groups larking about,hoax-wise, my reference to the "source" in this case is NASA......
and IMO they should be 100 percent beyond reproach, they are answerable to the people, whose hard earned money finances their ventures
interesting how times change, in the 19th century it was a career of its own to be perpetrating major Hoaxes, the culprits becoming heroes of a sort in the publics eye, I guess it was their equivalent of mass entertainment back then......now we have the TV......bit sad really :?

Martian pot lets you see dancing pink mastodons, but not only that, you can materialize them from your mind into reality. I put a local bar out of business that way. Patrons would walk out drunk, see a dancing pink mastodon in the street, and join AA. Martian pot also cures cancer, but the Bureau of Martian Anthropology is on the take from the AMA to keep the stuff on Mars.
