There's nothing wrong with the other games in my books....well...except for the ones where the gamer justs sits there and points to the screen and blows the heads off of zombies/nazis/etc. Fine and dandy, but I prefer the more elaborate games where you need to go from town to town, build up your armor/majic, and basically have to calculate your next moves to continue on the games in their storylines.
These are the best imho.
I have a few that I like to play every other day.
Whether 2D or 3D, you can't beat it.
1. Dragon Warrior -Series
2. Dragon Quest - Series
3. Breath of Fire - Series
4. Lufia - Series
5. ALL Final Fantasy
6. Secret of Mana - Series
There's many many more!
I got into a few PC ones in my time; even purchased the Exile Trilogies, Riven, Myst, etc.
Never got into the 'Doom' ones. They're probablly getting up there in being 'classic' right now eh?
Well, if you have some to add or suggest, then BY ALL MEANS. Do so!

Yes and no. I owe my current job to a game that I used to play back in the 90's: Mechwarrior. I wrote an online game that was used with the "offline" simulator and it became so popular I got a job offer from one of the players that was impressed by the design. I wrote the game and charged nothing for it and eight years later, here I am. Even tossed around making my own FPS after getting pissed off at the limitations of what Microsoft and SOE provided for online gaming options (and the price!).
Ah well... never was able to recruit enough of the talent required to make it a reality... even after sinking 3 years and $5,000 into development.
Learned a whole fuck of a lot, though. :)

4. Lufia - Series
the SNES Lufia games were great, I can replay them once a year or more and don't get tired of them
but there was a Lufia game for the gameboy advance that was just shit. It seemed cool at first because you could kidnap monsters and add them to your party, kind of like pokemon. But the monsters sucked and just died right away and it was pointless. The game wasn't fun, and it baited people like me who loved Lufia. It gets three thumbs down

xenogears
Fallout 1&2
Oblivion
Morrowind
For the PC, i know there is a shitload that im forgetting right now but im not really awake yet. But shut Battle Tech takes me back, my firends and I used to play the board game for days and days. I used to piss everyone off because I would build a jenner to run around them, when that got old i just used to fuck shit up with a Dashi. You shoudl checkout Real Myst, same game it was just remade in 3D, they even added an extra bonus age at the end. But they stay true to the original by keeping the ending every bit as dissapointing as the original. But I still don't get some major points of the sotry. So Shityis and Achfuck became trapped in those books and can't get back into Myst and the bitch can't get back to Myst either. So who tore out all the fucking pages and scattered them throughout the ages if everyone was stuck outside of Myst? I think that they made the bulk of the game and then did a LOT of blow and tried to invent some story around this game. That is a pretty big fucking plot hole if you ask me.

I lost months of my life making a character for guild wars only to have it nerfed. RPGs take to much time. Crysis, Counter Strike and Starcraft 2 are my favorites.

RPGs take to much time.
They DO. I highly agree with you on this one, however, it does take a certain amount of patience to reap the fruits at the end of the game. I'm probably speaking about all the 'hidden secrets/goodies' that the programmers implemented at the get-go.
Given enough time, I'm sure almost anyone could get the hang of 'point/click/shoot' things on screen and rack up the necessary points to get to the next level when one plays what I deem 'zombie/commando' games, but it loses a certain fervor after awhile and becomes mundane to me. Each to their own I guess :D

Gosh! I haven't played a good old RPG for a few years now. Thinking back, here are my top 5 (in order of excellence):
1) Final Fantasy 8
2) Morrowind
3) Phantasy star (on the Sega Master System)
4) Oblivion
5) Wild Arms
...... I've not played any of the other ones people have mentioned, I expect I've missed out on a whole heap of role playing fun and frolics. I heard somewhere that the Persona games are good.
Does anyone know of any that are free online? I've been meaning to play another RPG but I lack the hardware to buy proper ones. If I recall correctly, there's a website where games companies make their old games available for free download. I can't for the life of me remember what it was.... something to do with 'retiredware' or a name like that.
I could do with a good game to keep me out of the sun this summer.

The FPS games are fun for a while but they get old quick mostly because they are all so much alike, the call of duty makers are starting to realize this and in their haste to make games thing have gotten strange with the way they name their games. What happened to simple 1,2,3,4.... Now it is getting stupid soo we will have crap like Call of duty 4: Modern warfare part 2 secret black ops part 3

Lord of the rings online is free and should run on most ocmputers. Guild wars does cost money but last time i saw it was free to play online
check this out for old games

There are others just search for abandonware, they are old games for free and boarderline legal. They are basically old games that people are no longer enforcing the copyright on.

They have Phantasy star on xbox i believe but you have to try morrowind, I think that was one of the biggest games I have ever played. It is fucking HUGE. That is why Oblivion was such a let down I would have been much happier if they just remade morrowind with better graphics.

Don't tease me!
Like TV shows and Movies, it would be nice to see a 're-make' of these long-forgotten games into the newer consoles.
A LOT of the big-wig games have gone onto MOVIES.
i.e. Mortal Combat, Final Fantasy - to name a few.

Abandonware! It was doing my head in trying to remember that... by Christ it was!
Thanks master. I'll have a look at this Lord of the rings online game too. I got my fingers burnt playing a lord of the rings RPG on my old xbox though - it was awful.
It's only redeeming feature was a magic spell called 'Murder of Crows'. I used to laugh at it and then I found out that in reality a flock of crows is actually termed a 'murder of crows'.
Fancy that! Where do they come up with these names for groups of things. 'Gaggle of Geese' is another favourite.

I envy the person who has yet to step off the boat for the first time in Morrowind - what adventures await them!
I was a bit fucked off that you couldn't levitate in Oblivion. :(
