View Full Version : A 'First' for the Roman Catholic Church?

I've read historical references of many priests that DID take a wife. Somewhere along the lines, the cannon decided to have the priests walk the lonely road.
All I can say, is that "It's about time they got married!"
Well, other than the fact that it should have been allowed from the get-go.
[offsite:9b4d9w4h]CHARLOTTETOWN (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/090809/national/pei_married_priest) - For the first time in Prince Edward Island, a married man is going to be ordained a Roman Catholic priest.
Sixty-three-year-old Martin Carter says the Pope occasionally does grant special permission for married men to become priests in cases where they've converted from other Christian churches.
The former Anglican priest says there's been about 10 cases in Canada over the past few decades.
However, the father of three grown children says it's still rare, and he doesn't expect there will be a rapid growth in the number of married Catholic priests.
His ordination will take place Sunday before the bishop at St. Dunstan's Basilica in Charlottetown.
In about a week, Carter will begin working as an assisting priest in the parish of St. Piux X in Charlottetown.[/offsite:9b4d9w4h]
Guess they'll have to change the vows of - Piety, Chastity, and Obediance now to include a bit more
The first thing I thought of was how lonely these priests were and mabey now that they can marry (hey...it's a step up the ladder), they might keep their mitts off the young boys.
"However, a pedifile is a pedifile", and nothing changes that...um RIGHT?
At least now, there is another avenue open to our human frailities...um..er...LOVE. hee hee
Perhaps the Vatican has come to their senses? Don't know. Time will tell though. Hell, if the Anglicans can pave the way, why the hell not with the RC church?

I thought love was everything, so why can't... yeah. you know where I'm going with this. Maybe if they were allowed to be married, they wouldn't be fiddling with the altar boys.

Shortage of Priests?
[offsite:wlzutnwt]Married Priests in the Early Church
History fully supports a married priesthood. For the first 1200 years of the Church’s existence, priests, bishops and 39 popes were married.3 Celibacy existed in the first century among hermits and monks, but it was considered an optional, alternative lifestyle. Medieval politics brought about the discipline of mandatory celibacy for priests.
Let’s remember the words of Jesus: "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church." St. Peter, the pope who was closest to Jesus, was married. There are three references in the Gospel about St. Peter’s wife, his mother-in-law and his family. Based on Jewish law and custom, we can safely assume that all of the Apostles, except for young John, were married with families.4
Married priests and their spouses were the first pastors, the first bishops, the first missionaries. They carried the message of Jesus across cultures and protected it through many hardships. They guided the fragile young Church through its early growth and helped it survive numerous persecutions.
Pope John Paul II recognized this in 1993 when he said publicly that celibacy is not essential to the priesthood.5 This pronouncement offers great promise toward resolving the problem of the shortage of celibate priests.[/offsite:wlzutnwt]

Perhaps the Vatican has come to their senses?
Not until the day they quietly self-implode due to irrelevance... along with all other cults, religions and superstitious, destructive asshattery.

You could just get married and then become a priest...or you could have a moment of enlightenment and avoid both.
