Here is a Terrible situation for this Family, and in their minds and the past History of the Taliban, they probably will know what the outcome will be,Head Off,now who on AmKon i wonder will say, well thats how it is,or somthing bad,my feelings are this should not be a situation at all, with todays soldiers allowing our soldiers to be captured at all,if he was captured, i do not think he walked into a Taliban camp, and said i am An American soldier what do you want to do with me.

This video frame grab taken from a Taliban propaganda video released Saturday, July 18, 2009 shows Pfc. Bowe R. Bergdahl, 23, of Ketchum, Idaho, who went missing from his base in eastern Afghanistan June 30. The Pentagon on Sunday confirmed that the American soldier who went missing from his base in Afghanistan has been captured and identified him as a private from Idaho serving with an Alaska-based infantry regiment. The Defense Department released the name of Pfc. Bergdahl one day after he was seen in a video posted online as saying he was "scared I won't be able to go home." (AP Photo/Militant Video)
(AP)Friends and family of an Idaho soldier who was captured in Afghanistan prayed for his safe return Sunday, shaken by the image of the frightened young private in a Taliban video posted online.

Pfc. Bowe R. Bergdahl, 23, was serving with an Alaska-based infantry regiment earlier this month when he vanished, just five months after arriving in Afghanistan. He was serving at a base near the border with Pakistan in an area known to be a Taliban stronghold.

sounds like another excellent reason to get the hell out of Afghanistan. nothing good will come of this war- for either side. i seriously doubt the Taliban will cut the guy's head off- or even waterboard him- unless they hire Dick Cheney as a consultant.

I can't figure out why this has been allowed in the news though... it seems wierd to me...

What the soldier did is against the Code of Conduct... you never let them make videos of you, or take statements from you because it makes for good propaganda...

Now, we're seeing that "propaganda" all over our MSM...

Not only is the MSM complicit, but the Pentagon is allowing the vid as well...

Puzzling...

What the soldier did is against the Code of ConductOh please. What about the USS Pueblo? John McCain? The guy is only human and who gives a shit about Taliban propaganda? The people who believe it are already convinced and those who don't will never be. Let's not advocate sacrificing this kid's life for some sort of jingoistic pride. Pride in what? Illegal and futile invasions? Code of conduct my ass.

why this has been allowed in the news though.Because it IS news. You think the news should be censored by the government?

Whether you agree with it or not...it IS against the code of conduct, and thus, Illegal... so was what McCain did...

Is it really news? Or is it being inflated and pumped up...

This is war... in war shit happens... why are we focusing on the situation of one person?

Are they deflecting from this: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20090716/afghan_britain_090719/20090719?hub=TopStories

Or perhaps deflecting away from stuff like this: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-obama-econ17-2009jul17,0,6660668.story

This is another likely candidate: http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jRH6s5a6ZntZB_tSTQ0UYVfN5cww

yah, we'll keep talking about this one guy... Not the civilians being held in North Korea, The reporters arrested in Iran, the massive casualties in the last week or so in both Iraq and Afghanistan...

Nope, just talking about a Soldier who has been captured...

He's a POW... and while that sucks... thats pretty normal during wartime...

yah, we'll keep talking about this one guy... Not the civilians being held in North Korea, The reporters arrested in Iran, the massive casualties in the last week or so in both Iraq and Afghanistan...Of course that's untrue. All these stories were and are talked about and written about. The latest news always gets the most ink. That's why its called 'news'- because it's new. Get it?

This is war... in war shit happens... why are we focusing on the situation of one person Well- if can't understand that then I won't bother explaining it. But the word 'heartbreak' comes to mind.

As W01 said in his OP, "now who on AmKon i wonder will say, well thats how it is..." I guess we know.

Invoking emotion is an effective way of getting the public to suspend objectivity...

Seriously, you consider this a newsworthy story? The kid signed a contract... he damn well knew what might happen to him...

Its a risk that you take when you sign on the dotted line...

But somehow that is worth more media attention than this:

[offsite=http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jRH6s5a6ZntZB_tSTQ0UYVfN5cww:306hx9cj]India, US agree defence pact, approve nuclear sites

NEW DELHI — India and the United States agreed Monday a defence pact that will boost US arms sales here, as New Delhi also approved sites for two US nuclear reactors, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.
At a joint press conference with Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna, Clinton said the two sides had agreed an "end-use monitoring" accord that would provide safeguards for the sale of highly sophisticated US weaponry to India.
The agreement "will pave the way for greater defence cooperation" Clinton said, adding that India had also approved two sites for the construction of US nuclear reactors.[/offsite:306hx9cj]

Selling "Highly Sophisticated U.S. weaponry" isn't in the news... yet, this story is?

In a year, we won't be talking about this POW...

Invoking emotion is an effective way of getting the public to suspend objectivity... And as if 'the public' has any grasp on objectivity to suspend. There is only one 'objective' truth- love for humanity. The thread is entitled: Terrible Situation for this Family. And that it is. Terrible for them and terrifying for him. And who is his family? Everyone who chooses to be. You may make another choice- to be simply his employer- but I find that attitude repulsive. I don't give a shit about some dire possible conditions implied in any contract he may have signed. It has come down to this: a brother, a son, a child of a mother is in a desperate circumstance and some of us are there with him in mind and spirit. You want to sit this one out until the next news cycle? Well that's up to you.

I haven't been keeping up with the story at all, but it seemed weird right from the start. Like they were trying to spin it that he actually defected. They said he walked right off his base alone, unarmed, and without his body armor. But I think I would take all that shit with me anyway, even if I was going to defect. A lot of shit just doesn't add up here. CIA has their brubby fingers in this one no doubt.

Well... and then there's that.

Were it true that he did indeed walk off-base without gear, in the middle of the night, I'd feel sorry for the family for raising such an obvious moron and now having to deal with the heartbreak that having them in a war zone brings.

Its hard when it comes down to it, if that soldier did walk off base,i am amazed at the Guard house gate allowed him to walk off, myself being an ex soldier,on the other hand nobody knows if that soldier, is suffering combat stress,or any other factor, the Taliban do not recognize P.O.W.s he will loose his head, its not a nice situation in afghanistan or any other theatre of so called war,and this is for Boycoteverything, you have gone to the top of my Ladder in your replys to Pack, and pack when we sign that dotted line,we don't do it for a pat on the back,we do it to be a soldier,i had two brothers serving in the same Regiment as myself,it was a family thing and my own choice, and when people knock our soldiers thats unfair, its the Politicians who should get Hammered, one more thing that family is deffinatly going through Holy Hell,i am just pleased its not one of my sons or Daughters, like i said in the opening thread This situation should never have taken place, in the first place. Its a Shocking Problem.

Yeah, even if he did just up and walk off the base, which seems odd that no one saw him and stopped him, there is still a piece to that puzzle that we aren't seeing. Like I said, even if he did defect, why not take his gear?

Given that this war has dragged on for longer than WWII, I suppose the public is learning how insignificant WWII was compared to now. This enemy must be a greater was machine then we face in the 40s.
