[offsite=http://it.slashdot.org/story/09/07/12/0259246/Stealing-Data-Via-Electrical-Outlet:2adyucgq]NetworkWorld reports that security consultants Andrea Barisani and Daniele Bianco are preparing to unveil their methodology at the Black Hat USA conference for stealing information typed on a computer keyboard using nothing more than the power outlet to which the computer is connected. When you type on a standard computer keyboard, electrical signals run through the cable to the PC. Those cables aren't shielded, so the signal leaks via the ground wire in the cable and into the ground wire on the computer's power supply. The attacker connects a probe to a nearby power socket, detects the ground leakage, and converts the signal back into alphanumeric characters. So far, the attack has proven successful using outlets up to about 15 meters away. The cost of the equipment to carry out the power-line attack could be as little as $500 and while the researchers admit their hacking tools are rudimentary, they believe they could be improved upon with a little time, effort and backing. 'If our small research was able to accomplish acceptable results in a brief development time (approximately a week of work) and with cheap hardware,' they say, 'Consider what a dedicated team or government agency can accomplish with more expensive equipment and effort.'[/offsite:2adyucgq]

Hey forum member, that man in the suit next to your electrical outlet isn't stealing electricity.

Oh man... The Tempest Box! We were building those back in 1991 at SummerCon.

I think there's an old issue of PHrACk that has the plans for it.

The fucking memories that brings back from my misspent youth!

Hahahah.... I was looking for the old text file from the 90's that had the Tempest Box plans in it and found out that one of my old hacking programs is listed as a trojan horse!

Here's a CDC article (Cult of the Dead Cow) from '96 about protection from TEMPEST.

The malware companies owe you a cut for supplying a file to list and remove.

Cogburn.... you're.... a computer geek?

Haha just kidding. I was a computer geek until I realized just how annoying fixing everyone's computer was.

I wasn't good enough to be a professional at all, but people assumed I could fix anything just cuz like I happened to always trick out my computer with components and I took it apart and rebuilt it a couple of times.... and I know what "windows explorer" is. Quite magic, the things you can do when you try.
