View Full Version : Death Of Free Speech: Ireland Makes Blasphemy Illegal

Irish atheists are horrified by new legislation making blasphemy illegal, and punishable by a 25,000-Euro fine. Christians of all stripes should be, too.

As part of a revision to defamation legislation, the Dail (Irish Parliament) passed legislation creating a new crime of blasphemy. This attack on free speech, debated for several months in Europe, has gone largely unnoticed in the American press.

The text of the legislation is provided at the end of this post.

How does this impact free speech? Just don’t be rude.

Atheists can be prosecuted for saying that God is imaginary. That causes outrage.

Pagans can be prosecuted for saying they left Christianity because God is violent and bloodthirsty, promotes genocide, and permits slavery.

Christians can be prosecuted for saying that Allah is a moon god, or for drawing a picture of Mohammed, or for saying that Islam is a violent religion which breeds terrorists.

Jews can be prosecuted for saying Jesus isn’t the Messiah.

Dude... its not just Ireland...

Its illegal in a few states here in the U.S. too

Here's the Oklahoma Law:

§21-901. Blasphemy consists in wantonly uttering or publishing words, casting contumelious reproach or profane ridicule upon God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost, the Holy Scriptures or the Christian or any other religion.
§21-902. If it appears beyond reasonable doubt that the words complained of were used in the course of serious discussion, and with intent to make known or recommend opinions entertained by the accused, such words are not blasphemy.
§21-903. Blasphemy is a misdemeanor.

Yah... Completely unconstitutional... but we're not even out of the dark ages yet here in the U.S...

The only reason those laws are still on the books in the US is because no one has seen to appeal them to the Supreme Court.

Hasn't Ireland been a pain in the ass to the EU regarding the Lisbon Treaty?

A bit of political revenge, perhaps...

It is illegal in some states in America
But can they use it as ground for a house search?

(1) Where a person is convicted of an offence under section 36, the court may issue a warrant (a) authorising any member of the Garda Siochana to enter (if necessary by the use of reasonable force) at all reasonable times any premises (including a dwelling) at which he or she has reasonable grounds for believing that copies of the statement to which the offence related are to be found, and to search those premises and seize and remove all copies of the statement found therein, (b) directing the seizure and removal by any member of the Garda Siochana of all copies of the statement to which the offence related that are in the possession of any person, © specifying the manner in which copies so seized and removed shall be detained and stored by the Garda Siochana.

Yes , Yes we have
But the law was made by the Dail (irish parliament). Not the EU Parliament
Of course the EU could of been pulling the stings behind it. But this Law is much more than revenge , Its a way of controlling the country by using religion
Something Ireland is renowned around the world for being die hard Catholics

People have been flocking to the Holy Mary Parish Church in County Limerick to look at a recently felled log they believe holds the image of the Virgin Mary, although not everyone can see it.

Now , Isn't this fucking stupid?
Many people around Ireland in he past few days have been saying how retarded this makes Ireland looks in the eyes of the world
I load of fucking idiots kissing a tree stump that kinda-half-sorta-maybe-just-squint-and-you'll-see-it 'miracle' in a fucking tree stump

And now all those people if they repeated what they said , Can be fined up 25,000 Euros (Roughly 35,000$) and have their houses searched for more Blasphemous documents

Well, what I'm hoping is that the law in ignored by the people
But knowing our politicians (which might i add take the longest holidays of any country in Europe and the United States), Will use this law to keep pushing us in to a UK-like Nanny state

Already there has been "Anti-gang" Laws which make being a group of 2 people or over while committing a crime to be charged as being in a gang and be held up to a week without charge , Lord knows what effects that law could have on large protests and sit ins

Long story short, Fuck God, Fuck Allah, Fuck Buddha, Fuck John Smith, Fuck Jesus, Fuck Moses, And most of all, FUCK the stupid fucking people who run this country
