[offsite:2i5dwu02]Former cabinet minister Stephen Byers has been attacked as he arrived to hold a surgery with his constituents.

The North Tyneside MP was sprayed with a soft drink by a man protesting against MPs' expenses.

Police arrested a 64-year-old man at the scene at Shiremoor, near Newcastle, on Saturday. He was then given a caution for common assault.

A spokeswoman for Mr Byers said she did not know what had happened and would not make any further comment.

Northumbria Police said in a statement: "At around 9.40am on 4 July police received a report that a 47-year-old man had been assaulted outside of Emmerson Court, Shiremoor.

"Police attended the scene where a 64-year-old man was found to have sprayed soft drink over another man as he was getting out of his car.

"No injuries were sustained during the incident and the man was given a caution for common assault."[/offsite:2i5dwu02]

Common Assault? I wonder, if Byers was still a cabinet minister, would the guy have been detained under the Terrorist Act?

I mean, come on... A can of, say, Diet Coke for example DOES have enough toxins in it to be classed as a chemical weapon.

Shit. Sprayed with a softdrink, hold the phones. We need to go vigilante on behaviour like this.

Think of it, he'd probably have to get his suit dry-cleaned and all sorts, it doesn't just end with the emotional trauma of the initial assault, or even wiping off the sticky residue left by the drink. This entire attack could have cost him, not only some level of emotional scarring, but also in the region of £5-£10 depending on the quality of the dry clean.

I wonder if he'll try and claim on that expense?

It'd be a crime not to. I mean, imagine you take the contents of a soft drinks can in the line of duty and then have to pay for your own dry cleaning... Ridiculous.

I dear say he,d have a clothing allowance and if his suit was of any quality the content of the drink would just run off . . . and I'm also quite sure that he would have the knowledge that he a public figure so public property and people do get very upset over issues when they feel that they been riped for years . . . wear a rain coat! . . . he would of know protesters were there use a back enterance . . . :smokin:
