View Full Version : This Debunked Yet? "Spooky Playground Swing"

It's been in the news for quite some time. I've been checking around to see any updates, but didn't come up with anything...yet.
[offsite:5df25y9a]A ‘HAUNTED’ playground swing that rocks backwards and forwards on its own for days has scientists baffled.
Parents and children are convinced a ghost is to blame.
They were so spooked they reported the swing to cops after it began moving four months ago.
The phenomenon flummoxed police, who called physics professors into Firmat, Argentina.
But so far the boffins have failed to find a logical explanation.
Locals claim the seat moves nonstop for TEN DAYS before stopping dead, while other swings remain still.
Teacher Maria de Silva Agustina said yesterday: “One child called it the Blair Witch Playground. We believe it is haunted.”[/offsite:5df25y9a]

Man fuck I remember that.
The creepy Argentinian swing.
Last year if I recall, never debunked, but all over the news.

This was caused by wind... and not a lot of that, either:

sympathetic resonance is a beautiful thing...
shouldn't take much 'ghost power' to get a swing going...

Inquiry? humor me for a second
Ummmm....if the screwed up spooky swings were the cause of wind, then how come only the middle one was affected and not the other two flanking both sides of it?

I love it, there's a woman in the back-ground wearing a white coat taking photo's. If you look closely, the bottom of her coat flips up each time the wind blows. Spooky!

Anyone notice if there's any 'hidden' strings attached to the swing or not?

Ducky:
um, I said 'ghost power' for the swing, not wind... just showing what wind Can do, tha's all...
however, play around with sympathetic resonance... guitar maybe? tuning forks? piano? tons o' fun...
That middle swing resonates to a particular pitch, which is slightly different than the swings on either side of it... only that ONE pitch (or one sympathetic to it) will get that swing to swing... What is causing that pitch? Scientists are ruling out the wind, okay... electromagnetic power lines? am-fm-microwave broadcast towers? the rumble of the roadway? is there a subway nearby? the drone of a factory? etc. etc.
'ghost power' works for me, until something more measurable comes along.

I'm with torb on this one.
There's not enough information available to make an pronouncement from 10,000 miles away, but something about that video tells me there's a peculiarity to that environment in relation to the center swing that is causing the reaction.
Wind is one thing, but there's more going on than that. Unless the wind was increasing in forces and changing angular direction, which is not evidenced in the video, there's no reason why the swing would stop moving in the horizontal or circular pattern evidence at the start of the video. The motion of the swing over time indicates that an additional force was applied from a direction perpendicular to that of the breeze that flips up the woman's coat.
Notice the busy highway in the background. What industries are near there? What is the composition of the soil and bedrock in the area?
Is that swing sitting in the exact center of resonance for the ground disturbances caused by modern life in the area?

you've seen this kinda stuff before, yes?:

also works with sounds we can't hear (high and low frequency stuff)

hmm. could crop circles be made by high frequency sound waves? It's the first thing I thought of as I was watching that video.

interesting notion... doubt the more 'obvious' ones like faces and such could be caused that way, but the more far out design ones? that would be an interesting experiment... I've only ever tried it with sand on a sheet of metal... curious.

I always leaned towards a bastardized microwave oven.
Think about how a microwave oven works: it heats up the water in an organic material and turns it to steam, heating the object.
Notice how in some crop circles there is no evident physical damage. I'd be willing to bet that there's damage to the cell walls, making the grasses more pliable.
You could quite easily modify any microwave oven to emit microwaves in just such a way that you would send a broad "knife" of mircowaves with enough power to boil water up to a distance of about a foot in front of you. It would take a while, but I could envision a method where you could quite easily duplicate the physical effects present at the sites and still have the precision required to create those intricate patterns.

hadn't seen this video of the swing before. there didnt appear to the any strings attached and it moved erratically. if I had witnessed that first hand i'd be pretty freaked about it to.
