[offsite:3dlr5jgc]The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

By now, most of us are aware that there is a large patch of floating plastic in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. What you may not know is that it’s not made up of plastic bags and empty bottles. It’s made up of billions of tiny pieces of plastic, and it’s basically invisible unless you’re floating in it. While this might seem better, it’s actually much worse for the environment—and for you.

A look at the Pacific Gyre and the plastic floating in it.

The colors used in the transparency available at the above link are quite appropriate; makes one want to vomit.

It'd be funny if it became it's own mini-ecosystem in the future with aquatic species specifically adapted to living in it.

It's already begun.

The organisms in question are called Sphingomonas and Pseudomonas... (http://earth911.com/blog/2008/06/10/teen-finds-faster-way-to-breakdown-plastic/)

If there is that much plastic in the Pacific, maybe if we add a few CHEMICLES and Make it set we can take a walk across the sea for a laugh,to another country.lol

Who wants to go to China?

Besides, if it continues to grow and be incorporated into the food chain we'll be able to walk across the ocean on the bloated corpses of the sea life dead.

When are they going to clean it up . . . It takes a young lad to work out something in the attempt to combat this issue . . . shame on us for leaving this mess for our young . . . .There needs to be something of an effort to put it right . . . .prison ships on clean up . . . the banning of plastic bags, bring back glass vessels, only use recyclable plastic . . . .All the country that use the most plastic need to taxed for the clean up or take an active role in doing so . . . .

the banning of plastic bags,

that happened in south oz about a month or two ago actually.

they banned those cheap thin bags that the bottom splits open to carpet bomb a bunch of 1.2kg dog food tins on your toes.

no plastic bags.
you can pay 10c, and get a thick reusable plastic bag (like a department store plastic bag)

of course you can still buy household garbage bags, freezer bags etc.

banned !
