In the mean time WHO predicted that this thing will infect half the population of England by autumn. Now if it manages to recombine by then- holy shit!

From the CDC:

[offsite=http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/vol12no01/05-1007.htm:2oh4c9d8]What NIIP did not and could not survive, however, was the second blow, finding cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) among persons receiving swine flu immunizations. As of 1976, >50 "antecedent events" had been identified in temporal relationship to GBS, events that were considered as possible factors in its cause. The list included viral infections, injections, and "being struck by lightning." Whether or not any of the antecedents had a causal relationship to GBS was, and remains, unclear. When cases of GBS were identified among recipients of the swine flu vaccines, they were, of course, well covered by the press. Because GBS cases are always present in the population, the necessary public health questions concerning the cases among vaccine recipients were "Is the number of cases of GBS among vaccine recipients higher than would be expected? And if so, are the increased cases the result of increased surveillance or a true increase?" Leading epidemiologists debated these points, but the consensus, based on the intensified surveillance for GBS (and other conditions) in recipients of the vaccines, was that the number of cases of GBS appeared to be an excess.

Had H1N1 influenza been transmitted at that time, the small apparent risk of GBS from immunization would have been eclipsed by the obvious immediate benefit of vaccine-induced protection against swine flu. However, in December 1976, with >40 million persons immunized and no evidence of H1N1 transmission, federal health officials decided that the possibility of an association of GBS with the vaccine, however small, necessitated stopping immunization, at least until the issue could be explored. A moratorium on the use of the influenza vaccines was announced on December 16; it effectively ended NIIP of 1976. Four days later the New York Times published an op-ed article that began by asserting, "Misunderstandings and misconceptions... have marked Government ... during the last eight years," attributing NIIP and its consequences to "political expediency" and "the self interest of government health bureaucracy" (7). These simple and sinister innuendos had traction, as did 2 epithets used in the article to describe the program, "debacle" in the text and "Swine Flu Fiasco" in the title.

On February 7, the new secretary of DHEW, Joseph A. Califano, announced the resumption of immunization of high-risk populations with monovalent A/Victoria vaccine that had been prepared as part of the federal contracts, and he dismissed the director of CDC.[/offsite:2oh4c9d8]

Thanks for that video. Mike Wallace as a young man! I remember Jerry Ford taking the shot and the huge campaign to inoculate the entire nation. I never took it but my wife and kids did. Fortunately they never had any complications. The polio epidemic of the 50's and influenza pandemic of 1918-19 were still fresh in the minds of the people at that time. There was a high degree of confidence in the science and professionalism of the CDC. That confidence seems to have persisted to this day and I imagine the people will be lining up again to get their shots. But you can count me out. I still hate needles.

No banks until next week
Wednesday, July 08, 2009

Private banks announced they will not run business on Friday due to the health time-off for administrative institutions arranged by the national government as a measure to fight the H1N1 A influenza spread, said several spokesmen of the Argentina Bank Association (Adeba).

Likewise, banks have decided to bring forward the pay of retirement pensions and pay them out today and not on Friday as it was scheduled.

Considering that Thursday is Holiday, Argentine private banks will remain close until Monday next week.

On Friday all national stock markets will also call for a time-off, as well currency exchange activities will not be run.[/offsite:1acdfsfw]

Just read this in the Guardian-
Britain Combats Swine Flu

The UN and the EU today signed a contract with a large Israeli construction company to build a 24' high barrier wall surrounding the entire island of Britain in order to prevent the pig flu from spreading beyond its borders. The work has commenced in the south and will be fully underway within 12 hours. The work force is currently arriving on German and Japanese ships and will consist of 30 million Muslims recruited from Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt. The project is expected to be completed in 30 days and as part of the compensation package the entire work force is to be granted UK citizenship. A further edict was been issued by Parliament late last night requiring every household in England to provide lodging and other accommodations at least 4 of the new workers each. These accommodations shall consist of basic human needs including food, bathing facilities and sexual services required of every British woman between the ages of 13 and 62 in accordance with Sharia law. Late last night Parliament amended the law exempting MPs from these provisions.

Swine flu: lab accident may have caused pandemic (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/5693975/Swine-flu-lab-accident-may-have-caused-pandemic.html)

[offsite:3a6qkprw]Scientists believe that the H1N1 form of influenza "A" might not be circulating among humans had it not been for a leak, possibly somewhere in Asia or the Soviet Union, around 1977.

Forms of H1N1 flu circulated widely in the first half of 20th Century, most notably during the devastating 1918 pandemic which killed about 40 million people.

As immunity developed in humans, it was effectively replaced by other varieties of flu. There were no recorded cases of human to human transfer of H1N1 for 20 years from 1957.

Although there were occasional instances of transfer from pigs to humans during that time, it did not circulate between people again until 1977 when there were outbreaks of H1N1 flu in China, Hong Kong and the USSR, when immunity was lower.

A new study of the historical origins of the current outbreak published in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that it may only have re-emerged by accident.

"Careful study of the genetic origin of the virus showed that it was closely related to a 1950 strain but dissimilar to influenza A (H1N1) strains from both 1947 and 1957," the paper by Dr Shanta Zimmer and Donald Burke, of the University of Pittsburgh, says.

"This finding suggested that the 1977 outbreak strain had been preserved since 1950.

"The re-emergence was probably an accidental release from a laboratory source in the setting of waning population immunity to H1 and N1 antigens."

Almost 6,000 people have now been infected with swine flu since the outbreak reached Britain two months ago.

Three people infected with the disease in the UK have died, the latest being a young girl in Birmingham who passed away on Friday.

There were also fears that the virus had taken hold at Wimbledon after four ball boys and girls were sent home with suspected swine flu.[/offsite:3a6qkprw]
