Conservatives are largest ideological group: Percentage of “liberals” higher this decade than in early ’90s (http://www.gallup.com/poll/120857/Conservatives-Single-Largest-Ideological-Group.aspx)

Its rather unfortunate people can deduce themselves into two mainstream groups: "liberals" and "conservatives". Both groups are made up of douche bags of the highest order. They cannot see their bullshit, even though some of us who do not cling to party lines and ideological groups want to push them all of a fucking cliff. My bad, that's just me.

Seriously though, democrats, republicans, liberals, conservatives. Go fuck yourselves. Thanks.

[offsite:3jjsnda3]Thus far in 2009, 40% of Americans interviewed in national Gallup Poll surveys describe their political views as conservative, 35% as moderate, and 21% as liberal. This represents a slight increase for conservatism in the U.S. since 2008, returning it to a level last seen in 2004. The 21% calling themselves liberal is in line with findings throughout this decade, but is up from the 1990s.

These annual figures are based on multiple national Gallup surveys conducted each year, in some cases encompassing more than 40,000 interviews. The 2009 data are based on 10 separate surveys conducted from January through May. Thus, the margins of error around each year's figures are quite small, and changes of only two percentage points are statistically significant.

To measure political ideology, Gallup asks Americans to say whether their political views are very conservative, conservative, moderate, liberal, or very liberal. As has been the case each year since 1992, very few Americans define themselves at the extremes of the political spectrum. Just 9% call themselves "very conservative" and 5% "very liberal." The vast majority of self-described liberals and conservatives identify with the unmodified form of their chosen label.

Party-Based Ideology

There is an important distinction in the respective ideological compositions of the Republican and Democratic Parties. While a solid majority of Republicans are on the same page -- 73% call themselves conservative -- Democrats are more of a mixture. The major division among Democrats is between self-defined moderates (40%) and liberals (38%). However, an additional 22% of Democrats consider themselves conservative, much higher than the 3% of Republicans identifying as liberal.

True to their nonpartisan tendencies, close to half of political independents -- 45% -- describe their political views as "moderate." Among the rest, the balance of views is tilted more heavily to the right than to the left: 34% are conservative, while 20% are liberal.

Gallup trends show a slight increase since 2008 in the percentages of all three party groups calling themselves "conservative," which accounts for the three percentage-point increase among the public at large.

Binary opposition is key when trying to frame the debate...

The citizenry is now convinced you have to be either liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican...

3rd options are marginalized and deemed non-viable.

Now we can start talking about to what degree people are liberal or conservative... Nevermind that both are different sides of the same coin...

Politics should be a multifaceted die, not a coin...

Agreed Pack. Prime example is in the UK, where in London, the two main parties are Labour and the Tory (Conservative) Party. there is a third major party in the House of Commons, and thats the Liberal Democrats. But the media will tell you at every opportunity there is no way in hell they would ever get into power. And maybe thats true. but that does not excuse the attempt at limiting vote perimeters. But hey, the Government in Britain has fucked up SO bad even the media can't cover their bullshit and hold the frame in place.

Of course, I am not trying to paint the Lib Dems as the good guys. They are a powerful party in their own right. And loaded to the brim with Eurofeds last I heard, so we all know what side THEIR bread is buttered on.

If your personal beliefs and viewpoints can be narrowed down into any label, however wide that definition may be, you might as well kill yourself now.

I've always found it pretty nuts how anyone can support a conservative party over a liberal one, considering one is the opposite to the other (according to left and right wing thinking), and considering one is 'liberal' as in pro-freedom, if you're not that then... I guess you must be anti-freedom. People literally vote against freedom.

Just shows the level of retardation in the political system. That we're told to think about it so two dimensionally, and that even though it's dumbed down and simplified to the point of being utterly stupid, we still can't bring ourselves around to vote for the party which (theoretically) stands for freedom and liberty.

They are all no good, and when they say, your vote counts, Oh it counts as in 1,2,3, 4,etc,it sucks and my vote wherever i put it will not change anything,History has shown me in 45 years,it doe's not matter who you vote for they are all Tarred with the same brush, and if thats Democracy and Freedom, i am starting to scratch my head and realise us British split like we are, regarding we cannot organize and arrange changes we want, because our system is FUCKED,and if anyone can tell me serously, with the answer i can't wait to hear it,and by the way the 3 main partys LOVE it the way it is.why there will never be any Change.
