I am reviving an old thread with some news about a strike in London on the tube (subway). Post all the related strike/protest stories here, in honor of our fallen thread started by foxtrot oscar.

May it rest in peace.

[offsite:blidwq79]A 48-hour strike by thousands of London Underground workers has begun after last-minute talks to try to resolve the row broke down.

Members of the Rail Maritime and Transport union (RMT) walked out at 7pm yesterday - at the start of a stoppage which is expected to cause travel chaos across the capital.

The union believes the entire network will come to a halt, causing huge problems for millions of commuters and visitors, and costing businesses tens of millions of pounds.

Leaders of the union met London Underground (LU) managers at the offices of the conciliation service Acas all day yesterday.

But they failed to find a breakthrough in time to stop the strike going ahead.

The dispute is over pay, jobs and disciplinary issues, including the sacking of two drivers.

There were fears that due to the strike, England's World Cup qualifier against Andorra at Wembley today could have been played behind closed doors because of safety concerns.

But Football Association chief executive Ian Watmore said this would not be the case and the game would kick off at 8.15pm as planned.[/offsite:blidwq79]

With the tubes on strike, what happens when I flush my toilet? Will the poo poo still sit there or not? This is important.

Plunger time!

That sucker has GOT to go down.

Hopefully you don't end up reverting back to the Medevil times and chuck it out the window. Woe to the passerby on the sidewalk. :P

British rail workers vote to strike as unrest grows (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSLDE62I10X20100319?type=marketsNews)

Britain's rail signal workers have voted to strike in a row over jobs and changes to working practices, their union said on Friday, raising the threat of a first national rail strike in 16 years.

Any action would disrupt hundreds of thousands of passengers and be a headache for Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who already faces a walkout by British Airways (BAY.L) staff with an election only weeks away. [ID:nLDE62I0UX]

The RMT rail union, which has not announced any strike dates, said 54 percent of its members backed the walkout.

"Nobody should be under any illusions about just how determined RMT members are to win our fight against Network Rail's cuts programme," said RMT General Secretary Bob Crow.

Maintenance workers who belong to the union have already voted to take action.

Rail operators will work with Network Rail to find out how badly any strike would disrupt services, said Michael Roberts, chief executive of the Association of Train Operating Companies.

Network Rail Chief executive Iain Coucher accused the RMT this week of trying to "hold Britain's railway to ransom and show off before an election".

The opposition Conservatives have sought to make political capital out of the industrial unrest, calling Brown's response "feeble" and accusing his Labour Party of being in the pocket of the unions.

"The timing of RMT's reckless and damaging strike -- to coincide with an election campaign -- is yet more proof that the unions are trying to capitalise on Gordon Brown's weak government," said Conservative transport spokeswoman Theresa Villiers.

Brown Urges Cabin Crew To Stop BA Strike (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Business/Talks-Between-British-Airways-And-Unite-Union-Over-Cabin-Crew-Strikes-Collapse/Article/201003315576925)

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has urged British Airways cabin crew not to strike, as thousands of air passengers faced travel misery.

BA staff will walk out from midnight, hitting flights mainly at Heathrow and Gatwick airports, in a bitter row over cost cutting.

A four-day stoppage is also set to start on March 27, with further action expected from mid-April unless the deadlock is broken.

Slim hopes of a last-minute deal to head off the BA strikes were shattered when talks between the airline and union Unite suddenly ended in acrimony.
