Well here's my theory,as i have said in the topic heading WHY! Technology, remember the talk about the starwars project, also the NEUTRON bomb, well all has been quiet on the media scene for a few years about the starwars project, well about now or so that program will be ready for operation, also the U.S.A. will have perfected the Neutron Bomb, when all is functioning properly with the help of the U.K. at a place called, Filingdales in North Yorkshire ,is Radar in whats known as golf balls,so when the U.S.A. is ready for a conflict with Russia or China, both countrys NUKES will be DEFUNK because the satellites with the lasers on board will take out the Nukes just above the SILO's,BUT that will only happen when the system is 500% certain to do the job and cannot fail, then in one small step for mankind the Neutron BomB can be used to clear away any unwanted Human Shit, for example a russian city or two and a couple in China, and Bingo the U.S.A. Rule the world.with a lot of hi-tech help from science fiction games. :bom: :bom: :bom:

there will never be peace, the people who control our world prefer it just the way it is, paradise for them, and a shit-hole for us :)

they have the tech to take us out any way they please, Tesla's earth-quake machine must be quite advanced by now, IMO there is a big natural disaster heading our way, a real "planet-fucker" if you will :cyclopsani:

The United States has attempted to rule this unruly world since the end of the War. Pax Americana, just as Pax Romana and Pax Britanica, is exhausted. But it will not fall without a violent reaction. Look out below...

Ummm, not all the people in the USA want that.

Just the assholes running things and their lackeys.

Besides, hey WzO, they don't need no neutron bombs nor lasers, they gots the HARRP!

Well the BAD news is i won't be around to see it,sit and give it 5 minuets and its the only way the world will go,and being on a serious note (which is crap) it will happen, tell you what when i have gone to HELL and the young ones of AmKon can tell me Fuck Warlord Guess What. :)

You have a strange obsession with intergenerational divides.

Anyway, I don't plan on going to hell, but if you like, I can drop you a postcard from the Astral Plane. I rather suspect though that the Guess What will probably not be what you expect/wish for.

OK Snow Crash you tell me where we will end up with the world in the next 50 years (no offense) if you can be arsed. at least have a Guess!

Pretty much as it is now, maybe a degree or 2 hotter. Australia will be empty apart from the dust farmers. Africa will still be a fucking hole, Russians will be using Euros as will the Brits. The US of A will be plodding along quite happily with a lot of piss and wind coming from The White House. The middle east will devolve in to the worlds greatest cluster fuck about 25 minutes (roughly) after the oil runs out, which it will one day... I suppose!

With any luck France will be closed on health grounds.

Hmmmmm

Need to go and give my crystal balls another rub.

Kindly indicate one futurist in 1909 that was accurate in their predictions of 1959.

How about one from 1959 and their opinion of 2009?

Where's my hover car?

There's not enough profit in progress. You'd have to convince people to buy the hovercar or whatever technology it may be. Its much easier to slightly improve outdated technologies and charge extraordinary amounts for the "updated" versions.

the oil-wells in the Gulf are refilling as we speak, oil does NOT come from dead vegetation matter, nor does it come from decomposed T-Rex ass-holes :pig:

The Hannah Montana and "Snuggie" phenomena would disagree with you. People will buy whatever they are sold as long as the gratification is on par with the perceived cost.

We digress too far off the point in our discourse, however.

Practical personal flight technology is still non-existent in 2009 although most futurists 50 years ago were certain we'd see something along those lines by now.

If it exists, it will be marketed and sold.

The best technology so far is the quintuple failure resistant design of the SkyCar.

Sometimes the shit is just harder than we might perceive from our current perspective... as would be my opinion of the scenario set out in the OP.

Abiogenic petroleum generation theory is the "round earth" theory of our age.

Smite for being well-read.

I wonder Cog....what happened to the L5 project?...........officially junked of course and I imagine the postion would be able to be observed from earth?......one of the benefits would have been human (unaided) flight

artists impression of L5 space colony.....

The L5 Society was founded in 1975 by Carolyn and Keith Henson to promote the space colony ideas of Dr. Gerard K. O'Neill.

The name comes from the L4 and L5 Lagrangian points in the Earth-Moon system proposed as locations for the huge rotating space habitats that Dr. O'Neill envisioned. L4 and L5 are points of stable gravitational equilibrium located along the path of the moon's orbit, 60 degrees ahead or behind it.

An object placed in orbit around L5 (or L4) will remain there indefinitely without having to expend fuel to keep its position, whereas an object placed at L1, L2 or L3 (all points of unstable equilibrium) may have to expend fuel if it drifts off the point.

I'm a little familiar with the L5 concept from my readings of Tim Leary. He was a huge fan of the project.

My best guess is that the people that conceived the project underestimated the technological and cost challenges involved. The X Prize was only first won 8 years ago and that was instituted a mere 5 years after the conception of the L5 project.

I know virtually nothing about rocketry beyond my adolescent experiments with Estes models, but what I do understand is physics and the forces involved in attempting to escape the cocoon of the atmosphere.

If you think about it that way, it'd be easier to first build a LEO space station for manufacturing of parts and simply build a system to shuttle raw materials to this orbiting manufacturing facility. Parts are then shipped from the facility to the L5 point for final assembly.

Would you risk a $100,000,000 section of a space colony on an Earthbound launch or only the $10,000,000 of raw materials required to make it?

The distance between Earth and an L5 colony is further than the originators envisioned.

I think costing, back then was between 60 and 200 billion,....was never going to be cheap, the idea was to mine the lunar surface

...the excavation left on the moon after the removal of the materials for the first colony would be a mere seven yards deep by two hundred yards long and wide

Awesome cheez, great pic, looks amazing alright, apparently up the side of the tube the gravity would be low enough to enable a human to literally fly unaided  ...wouldnt that be the shit!

... and enter The LiftPort Group.

http://www.liftport.com/

They predict their first space elevator ride will be in 2031.

If you browse their Flickr album, you can see they have come quite a distance in their deployment experiments than HighLift Systems did back in the early 2000's.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/space_elevator/485587860/in/pool-spaceelevator/

HighLift, however, has folded and being the only commercial venture to gain NASA funding I doubt we'll see an enterprise such as this find government backing any time soon.

Here's what the founders of HighLift ended up doing w/ their research....

That idea would be quite an achievement.
