Steve Alexander, a crop circle fanatic, from Gosport, Hampshire, said: "Some years you do get themes developing and often you are looking for why this happens.

"It could be to reflect the status of the world at the moment with its financial, political and more importantly, environmental problems.

"I imagine this will not be the last one we will see this summer and it has already been a busy summer for spotting them as they are well ahead of schedule."

In past years the crop circle season has typically run from July to August but already four have been found in barley fields stretching from Wiltshire to Oxfordshire this year.

They have been found across the ancient 'ley lines' - believed to have mystical qualities.

Fuckin nuts...

Damn that one is definitely better than the jellyfish.... If I would have seen one like that 20 years ago I might have a different opinion about crop circles.

The fact that they get more intricate every year tells me that the folks making them are getting better and better.

The fact that they get more intricate every year tells me that the folks making them are getting better and better. And that statement ought to put this silliness to bed. (But it won't) This 'alien art' is just a bit more fodder for the Big Mac stuffed dejects and rejects among the 2012 cultoids. Where's Deaman when we need him? -Although it's heartening to see that his cause is not forgotten...

Simply amazing!

Was thinking of how we could find out 'how' and better yet 'who' is making these images. For example, how many satelites are over our countries at any given moment?

Doesn't matter if crop circles are done at night, as most satelites have infrared imaging right?

Aren't a lot of them programmed for a wide sweep range when they pass overhead? I would imagine it's just a matter of retrieving particular 'grid images', enlarging, and there you have it.

[offsite:7wvrfawk]Jellyfish, dragonflies and peace symbols: The summer of crop circles is just getting started

The 2009 crop circle 'season' started with abundance and now looks set to bring a summer of circles to Britain's fields.

Whether made by human hands or an altogether different life form, no less than 20 formations have been spotted since the season began in April. This week alone two huge designs have mysteriously surfaced.

An intricate 150ft dragonfly appeared in a barley field near Yatesbury, Wiltshire, just days after a jellyfish design was cut into crops in Oxfordshire.

When the 600ft Portuguese man-of-war turned up near Kingstone Coombes, Oxfordshire, crop circle author Karen Alexander said: 'This is the first jellyfish crop circle in the world. It is absolutely huge - roughly three times the size of most crop patterns.'

Last week a 350ft yin-yang symbol was cut into a barley field near Devizes, a crop circle hot spot.

Mrs Alexander's photographer husband, 50, from Gosport, Hants, said: 'I imagine this will not be the last one we will see this summer - and it has already been a busy summer for spotting them as they are well ahead of schedule.'

'Some years you do get themes developing and often you are looking for why this happens,' Mr Alexander said.

'It could be to reflect the status of the world at the moment with its financial, political and more importantly, environmental problems,' he added.

Crop circles usually start appearing in July and August but have been seen less in the last two years. This year it seems they are back with abundance.

The reasons for the decline in the circles over recent years is not known but it is thought the driving winds and heavy rain that battered Britain last summer may have made crops hard to handle - for humans and aliens alike.

Just how these intricate crop circles are formed is open to debate.

Some argue the formations are the work of artists with access to computers and plenty of volunteers.

The 'Circlemakers' (http://www.circlemakers.org/) are a group of artists, including Brit artist Gavin Turk among others, who say on their website that they get together with other teams of circle-makers to create ambitious formations.

They even give first-timers tips on how to create a simple crop circle.

But enthusiasts say summer nights are just too short to accomplish such complex work secretly.

There is research to suggest that 'true circles' are created by a massive surge of energy in just a few minutes.

Sceptics, however, might suggest the circle surge is down to money as the mystery patterns are believed to bring millions of pounds in tourism to the west county.

But the fact that many appear on ancient 'ley lines' leads others to believe they carry a mystical meaning.

Mr Alexander, who has been studying crop circles with his wife for 15 years, added: 'People believe they will increase in frequency up to 2012 where there will be some kind of cataclysmic world event.'

These latest, while impressive, do look less than perfect: observe the swirls in the wide flattened parts.

I think circles are serious business, regardless if theyre man-made or not.

Man-Made: why havent these hoaxters been prosecuted for crop damage? A lot of these circles create damage, and ruin harvests.

Otherwise: Why are they sending images, of Pi, Jellyfish, Dragonflies, etc.... Is it just a natural earth thing? Not sure we'll ever get the answer. The true answer.

and if you/your sock just want to provide absolutely zero intellectual input, please take it to chatter or something.

Here's what they have to say about crop damage at the "Circlemakers" site:

[offsite:31o1h157]There's been some hilariously bad reporting, such as the BBC initially reporting that the so called 'Jellyfish' crop circle had caused £600,000 worth of damage! At most 2 tonnes of crop was actually flattened, the current grain price is around £120 per tonne so that's £240 of crop, quite a bit short of the stated £600,000. Great reporting from the BBC. Admittedly they have now revised that figure down to £600 in the article - which is still too high - after I pointed out their howler.

Returning to the issue of crop damage, as long as the crop circle is not heavily visited the crop will recover. If the farmer then drops his blades come harvest, he'll be able to recover most of the flattened crop anyway, just as he would with any wind damage. Or, if he opens up the field and charges £1 for every visitor he'd actually be in profit.

oh ok, I understood some of the circles to have badly damaged crops (Burnt parts, radiation, etc).

Of course, I believe they, the circlemakers, have a vested interest in playing down the damage of their circles, no?

and don't forget about bows and whiskers.

Fuck the bows and whiskers, look at the trampled area around the bows and whiskers!

They should have reversed that image out and just stomped down the bows and whiskers.

They'd have been done before the pubs closed...
