I dont know why they hang on to guantonamo bay,let me tell you of an experience regarding GB.
I was on a ship outward bound from Novorrossisk to Cienfuegos,it had a deck cargo of long wooden crates on the manifest as ''motorboats, out of GB comes this US destroyer going..whoop..whoop.and signalling furiously by aldis, what ship, where from, where bound, all these jokers running round on their deck with tin hats and lifejackets on,like we were gonna give them a broadside and a torpedo up the hawse pipe, jeez man it was funny, the arrogance of these pricks knew no bounds, the old man filled his pipe, told the sparks to let them know we were in international waters,a week later the Bay of Pigs happened, another fuckup, another laugh.

the Atlantic trench is the feature...... as it swings west the caymans are the only other landfall until you hit Guatemala, a "D" shaped basin, still fairly deep, lays to the North of the Caymans with the coast of Belize to the West and arcing North-East to meet up with the top of Cuba, a short hop to the North and you are in the Gulf of Mexico, a natural "corridor" for submarines and whatever else......for the "whatever-else", read Ivan Sanderson
