Game Over: Federal Law Doesn’t Trump State Medical Marijuana Laws (http://blog.mpp.org/medical-marijuana/game-over-federal-law-doesnt-trump-state-medical-marijuana-laws/05182009/)
California’s medical marijuana laws just received their latest legal vindication today - this time at the nation’s highest court. The U.S. Supreme Court announced that it will not be hearing a case lodged by the counties of San Diego and San Bernardino aimed at gutting California’s medical marijuana law (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,520525,00.html). The two counties claimed that the federal law banning all marijuana trumped the state’s medical marijuana law.
The challenge was initially filed in 2006 at the San Diego County superior court after the counties had refused to implement the state-mandated medical marijuana identification card program. The superior court judge sided with patients and state law and strongly denied the counties’ claim. Last year, a state appeals court also ruled against the counties, and the state Supreme Court refused to hear their appeal.
The protracted legal battle has been a popular excuse among California officials trying to shirk their legal obligation to uphold the state’s medical marijuana laws. Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has decided against hearing the case, officials in San Diego, San Bernardino, and seven other counties not following the law have nowhere to go but to obey the will of the voters who overwhelmingly support medical marijuana laws.
Beyond California, the message should now be clear that hiding behind federal law is no longer a legitimate position to take when considering state-level medical marijuana laws.

I believe this is going to end up forcing congress' hand in the not-so-distant future to reschedule cannabis (and hopefully all other biologically-derived substances) from schedule 1 to something similar to alcohol and tobacco.
You'd think adults would be able to choose what to put in their own bodies, especially if it does no to little harm. We seem to have no problem getting shit faced on the weekends or smoking formaldehyde/cyanide laced cigarettes, but as soon as a medicinal/recreational herb comes long with many benefits we can't use it.

Doesn't work like that.
Not one single patient has ever been raided in their home by federal agents for use and/or possession within state guidelines... only clubs and growers have been busted.
Since the complete decriminalization bill was submitted to committee in the state congress all DEA actions in the state have ceased. They are not going to go back to raiding dispensaries until that bill is dead or public sentiment at this point might just generate a referendum.... and a state that completely decriminalized would change the nature of the debate forever.

"Every department, every agency, every board needs to essentially be on the table for consolidation, downsizing and, in some cases, elimination," said Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee of San Luis Obispo, who will become Assembly GOP leader June 1.
"Unfortunately, all the choices are bad now," said Senate Republican leader Dennis Hollingsworth of Murrieta.
Steinberg, D-Sacramento, said Republicans should quit talking abstractly and submit a specific list of cuts.[/offsite:1iic40c4]
Oh really? Cutting education, law enforcement and public services?
What the fuck else is the state government responsible for?
The state wanted to borrow money from cities and counties to balance the budget... you know what we said?
[attachment=0:1iic40c4]Flaming finger.jpg[/attachment:1iic40c4]
Gray Davis totally fucked this state and we were on the way out, but we weren't above water just yet. Arnold had this shit under control until the credit freeze up and we couldn't continue the game of musical chairs. Nearly every bastard that was in Sacramento that backed Davis is gone now.
So what's that mean? No state run schools for delinquents and no state highway patrol. Some bloated public service programs have to cut the fat.
This is the system screaming because it's got financial diarrhea... this is not Mad Max.
I don't have the confidence the rest of the country has the infrastructure or political processes to withstand the storm that California is currently enduring.

Not at all. Saying the state is doomed or that vital services are going to be cut is fucking ludicrous, fearmongering hype.
Note there's no specifics in there anywhere... in fact... the specifics of these silly claims are exactly the arguing point of the moment. Arnold's camp refuses to be nailed down to hard facts.
Why? To scare the shit out of the rest of the country to put pressure on the Fed to provide a bailout. Period.
It's not Cali's fault that Gray Davis and Ken Lay are criminals. We recalled that fucker when his complicity came to light; that's how Arnold got his job in the first place.
The duplicity of bailing out GM and AIG but allowing the 8th largest economy in the world to tumble into depression, potentially bringing the rest of the country with it, is simply awe inspiring. Oh... but we can't print any more bailout money. The well has run dry. History should record the monumental error in judgment portrayed in the selection of recipients of bailout money. Notice how no one says "too big to fail" anymore.
What you seem to be arguing is that TPTB in California are going to allow the state to degrade to a point of uncontrolled anarchy.
Reread the Grapes of Wrath. We've been here before. It's not pretty but it's not the end of the world.

California is #2 in auto manufacturing according to 2002 statistics, 2nd to Michigan. California is #2 in oil production and refining capacity, 2nd to Texas. California is #1 in hybrid automobile production.
Arguing Fannie and Freddie is a tougher case for you to argue than you might think. A 30% failure might sound scary because it equates to around 500,000 homes... but when was the last time the economy of Michigan saw 1,500,000 in home sales in a single year?
Percentages are misleading outside proper perspective.

California has always been famous for living outside their means... and for the most part, the rest of the country thinks california is full of "fake" people... (not accusing anyone of anything, just saying what the non-california opinion is... so please, put the pitchforks away :P)
Thats the point I was trying to make with the housing bubble collapse... when people pay 750k for a house that was purchased 30 years ago for 75k... well... something's not right...
Side note: The 750k house is for real. My father in law purchased it for around 70-80k back in the 70's... and when we sold it after he passed away, it went for 750k...
My parents bought a house back in the 70's here in michigan for about 85k... and it was last appraised at 175k... That is slow, steady, healthy equity growth... not 100x its origional value mate...
My stuff might not make sense either cog... i'm on Whiskey and my wisdom teeth pain killers right now lol kinda spacey.

California and Florida have a lot of "desirable" real estate... so perhaps more than their fair share of overpriced crap... you know what blew me away? Land prices in Alaska of all places. Raytheon employees are piss tested, the worker at the DMV window is not.
I was shocked to find out just how much piss testing was done without legal requirement in the midwest. I'd wager it's upwards of 75%.

"In your system" means that it has been metabolized into other chemicals. It is those chemicals which are tested for when you get UA'd.
The concentration of metabolites indicates how recently you last smoked, which is what is measured.
