All anyone has to do is type the 4 words in the title of this thread (any search engine will do) and you'll come across pages and pages of complaints
For example, no sooner do I get my new vista up and running, the sound seems to have 'disappeared'. Just like that.
Here's the steps I took to troubleshoot:
1. Opened up Start
2. '' '' Control Panel
3. '' '' Device Manager
4. (Here's the fun part) Under 'sound, video, and game controllers' I've twice reinstalled - ADS Instant HDTV PCI. This was the only default card to choose from the list, and doesn't work.
Is this something that PC buyers can expect when they purchase a new system. Damn thing should come with a warning label.
Has anyone else experienced this, and would I need to head out to the stores today to purchase a card to 'manually install' myself?

Everyone should get a Mac. Especially Lala.
Trust me people. Only takes a week to get use to. I never thought I would become a MAc NAzi, but it becomes your duty to after you notice how much bullshit is in a PC.
Check the computer vendor's website for notes, drivers, etc.

Dunno if this will help, but sometimes Vista sound drivers have two components to it when it installs, and you've got to manually select the right one. It's annoying, but not unfixable.
What you do is you right click on the sound icon (the one that looks like a speaker) in the system tray (the area next to the clock/date display on your taskbar). A menu should pop up with several options, one of them being "Playback devices". Select that option. Next you should see a little window titled "Sound" pop up which contains several tabs. It should open at the "Playback" tab by default. If I'm guessing correctly, your soundcard may list two options in that tab. What you do is you choose one option, select the "Configure" button which will then pop up a new little window with a little button that says "Test". Click on that. If there is a sound, close that window by clicking "Cancel" and choose that option to set as the default. If there is no sound, close the test window anyway, choose the next option and repeat the above test.
If neither option gives you a sound when you test configure it or there is only one option, check your speakers. If everything checks out and it's still like that, buy a set of speakers that connect via USB and have a built in sound card in it. Screw that bullshit card you have.

Everyone should get a Mac.
Macs are illegal in Canada due to their biohazardous nature.
The solution to your problem Ducky: wipe and load XP or Linux. Fuck Vista.

... or you could just run away in a huff, buy a new one, and then invite everyone over to use it on the selling point it's exactly like the old one but better somehow.

Ducks,
If it only shows one sound
card available, something seems
a bit whack.
It should show two. One that is
on-board (hard wired) and one that
is removable (pci).
If you're getting zero sound, try
moving the card to another slot.
Or, unplug the Hitachi and plug the
speakers in. :D I had to.
Let us know,
Lex

Open SuSE 10.2 for me
I am also running Debian on my File server...
and Slackware on a live CD when it comes time for repairs...
You can also use slackware Live CD to defeat network/PC passwords in windows... it can read hashes :P

Pack, any info on how to mount cd images, im trying to mount a fireworks 8 install cd (*.bin format) but all this shite on the net about how to do it just dont work, can i get daemon tools for debian or some alternative that works with all/most disk images *.iso/*.bin/*.mdf/mds etc, really need to test out fireworks with wine as ive heard it should run fine which was the only thing keeping me on windows, bar some games but fuck that, better stuff to do with my time.

Speaking of open source software, you guys know of any good php-based database management system that has an integrated gallery (and possibly user registration) function built into it? Something modular in nature, or at least with a relatively simple module construction to it. Making an app from scratch is... challenging, and possibly a waste of time if somebody's already created something I can customize.
phushion: try:
sudo apt-get install acetoneiso2

tried all sorts, ive got the rpm for that acetoneiso but requires rc1 dependancies which i dont have the repos for, im too nackered to look properly only had 3 hours kip tday, ill keep plugging away, taa for the info tho.
Is there any reason it wont let me edit the sources.list file with kedit as it keeps saying its locked and cant do it via su in terminal, really winding me up now, tempted to stick fc10 on less hassle

why don't you just convert the bin to an iso?

Being lazy, anyhow i think ive managed to sort it, sourced a list of sources and im probs running the most unstable copy of debian out as it appears to have installed all the unstable packages, anyroad, ace is installed will hopefully have fireworks running soon, just need apache/php/mysql n i can get on with some work.
Ta for the adivce before tho, reassured me that i was on the right track!

I would try what BK mentioned...
There's an even easier way to do it if you're running a dual boot system though...
are you dual boot, or just 100% nix?
edit: are we really such nerds here that every thread about vista problems turns into a Linux tech support thread? lol

lol thats my fault, i had tried what BE suggested but i had no repos setup with the sources, but found a 300+ line files of repos so using that (was updated 10/3/09 - uk style incase of confusion with mm/dd), i think the prob was due to using a 1 disk i386 install but appears to be happy installing things now so fingers crossed.
So, did this sound card get installed in the end? lol
EDIT:
Pure nix on my 250gb and a 300gb that was my old Win/NTFS store
EDIT
Looks like i gotta convert it after all, if ida known it wasnt gonna play nice ida had this done a few hours ago. Ah, reminds me of the days when i started faffing about with windows, i can see a sleepless night or two approaching...

If you have the program you need on a hard drive hooked up to the machine, perhaps using WINE and importing it will be easier than trying to install it...
Its not the recommended way to get it set up, but if you're hitting roadblocks... it IS possible to do...
