Just in case you live under a rock, Wolfram Alpha goes online in two weeks or less.

Currently the site is spidering the internet. It has a ways to go before it has the foundation cache that Google calls upon, however the search engine is heuristic.
It attempts to understand what you are asking for. It knows that Russia is a country, so if you just enter "Russia" it won't give you anything but information on the country. Another example I heard was it can answer questions like "How far is the Moon from Pluto?" It understands "How far" and recognizes the context of "Moon" and "Pluto". As opposed to simply giving you links that contain the highest ranked sites with that phrase, it will first actually attempt to answer the question.
Turing, anyone?

Right... cause everybody and their momma duplicated the interface and made it more appealing in the process.
Cuil's engine still can't stand toe-to-toe w/ Google... or even Yahoo!... because they can't spider the internet as quickly or as completely.
