I certainly agree that many aspects of "authority" have been overdone and taken much further than they need to be (and I'm talking about the US in general now, not one website). I wouldn't mind seeing a return to more personal responsibility and less red tape and power being thrown around for the hell of it.

However..

Would you really prefer to go back to the days of lawlessness and every man for himself, when anyone could just kill you if they didn't like the look of you, or take your possessions for himself if he was stronger or had better weapons?

Granted we aren't exactly crime-free here or anywhere, but at least there is some law & order which deters most people from doing whatever the hell they want.

Human nature makes a utopian "we're all equals" society nearly impossible; there will always be some who want to be more equal. If "authority" isn't a badge and a uniform, it will be the guy who can kick your butt telling you what to do, and he won't have even a pretense of limits and controls on his behavior.

What? I do not. Never have. I'm a dedicated omnivore, thanks very much, and I've slaughtered my own livestock before and eaten it (I did make sure they weren't named, though.) Besides, don't you know how dangerous unfermented soy products are?

I have two young Muscovy drakes that we're considering for the table as soon as they're big enough. Perhaps I'll name them Oblivion and Martian. :P
