Starting tomorrow, cell phone numbers (in the US) are going public. This means that you will be ripe for the pickings by telemarketing firms -- calls you will HAVE TO PAY FOR.

If you are a sane and rational human being who does not want this invasion of your cell phone's privacy (like most people) you can call 888-382-1222. This call is free.

This is the National Do Not Call registry. You must call from the phone you wish to have blocked. It is good for five years.

31 days after registering, your phone is off limits. Any telemarketing calls after this registration period are illegal and a complaint can be filed at https://www.donotcall.gov/

You can also register your phone number at the website.

Damn it, I hate telemarketers. I did that job for two weeks. I can't understand how anyone in their right mind would keep a job like this permanently. Yuck.

I've been on the list for years with my land line. They very rarely call me and when I mention the registry, that's the end of it.

The loophole, naturally, is that if you do business with a company, say your bank, they are allowed to call and try to sell you shit unless you opt out.

Tell you what; I think that people ought to be allowed to sell their OWN damn numbers, and nobody else can. Why should some third party get money for spreading my digits around? That's my number, it should be my money.

My favorite is here at work. I keep getting the pre-recorded calls that my factory warranty is about to expire. It would be one thing if they actually said my name, but to call a government phone and try to take my money........ that's just wrong. And everytime they call I press the button to "opt out" but they still keep calling........... bastards

The best one is when the autodialer calls my phone and gets the voice mail, and then the message says they have something VERY important to tell me, please call back at this regularly-billed long distance number.

No. Fuck you. I ain't calling shit. And you phone tards need to stop calling me.

The carrier I'm using in me country right now has this "Call me bonus" deal. Every 15 second block I spend on the phone receiving calls I get bonus points which I can claim for free text messages or talk time. It can add up to some great savings when I entertain telemarketers. I try to get them to repeat slowly every question.

GN, where did you get your information from?

As far as I can tell, this still is NOT true.

The Truth About Cell Phones and the Do Not Call Registry
The Federal Trade Commission today reiterated that despite the claims made in e-mails circulating on the Internet, consumers should not be concerned that their cell phone numbers will be released to telemarketers in the near future, and that it is not necessary to register cell phone numbers on the National Do Not Call (DNC) Registry to be protected from most telemarketing calls to cell phones.

And:

The truth about cell phones and the DNC Registry is:

Contrary to the e-mail, cell phone numbers are NOT being released to telemarketers, and you will NOT soon be getting telemarketing calls on your cell phone.
There is NO deadline by which you must register your cell phone number on the Registry.
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers are barred from calling consumers on their cell phones without their consent.

No I am not saying that they do not and will not attempt to call. All I am saying is that according to the information I have read on the FTC website and other places, it is still illegal. And they do go after businesses that do not listen. And you can also report them. Will it help? I do not know.

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2008/04/dnc.shtm

Also, the five year thing is being; in the process of being, thrown out the window. So number that are listed in the DNC will NOT expire after five year. They are in the works of making the SNC register perminent. And until it is in writing, they are leaving all the number that are registered and still active, on the DNC.

In the UK we've had a system whereby you register your home number if you dont want telemarketing calls with a Government Telephone Preference Service (TPS) Legally the companies have to remove you from their calls list (but they dont always do it).
How do they get around it? They open offices in India !, then you get loads of calls.

You can get a Caller ID phone, but that will only identify calls from inside the UK who havent blocked their caller ID. As I get a lot of calls from the US, OZ and France its no good for me.

I just like wasting their time and going through their whole sales program untill it comes to the Name and Address part when I start stuttering. Indians cant understand people with stutters !!
