Im not sure if this has been posted elsewhere yet, but I was watching NASA TV yesterday to listen in on the precarious touchdown of the Phoenix Mars lander. the 50/50 chance they gave it to be a success, well...
it was a success, and a near perfect landing to boot.
I've saved most of the images from the initial low-res 'inspection', of what NASA received within the first few hrs of its landing.
Thanks to Nasa.gov

in the last pic, you can kinda see something near the horizon. NASA outright said that they do not know what it is. It could very well be the heat shield, parachute, or maybe a very shiny alien. -_-

At the moment, NASA is doing their second Press Conference, with new photos. One of the satellites caught an image of Phoenix after it deployed its parachute.
'Course I have to LOL when they say they need to send em through "Image Processing".
Additional Images tonight. Supposedly.

I admit I wasn't aware of this lander until just the other day, so judging by the foot shot, I take it this wasn't an air bag landing?
Alessandra
05-26-2008, 03:51 PM
During entry, a parachute was deployed. At a certain point, the parachute was jettisoned from the lander, and thrusters were used to put it on the surface.

ROFL = metric Imperial ... now that was funny. AS IF !!!!!!!! they must think we are bloody daft!! more like the project went Black !!!
But to be fair.. I was not aware of that lander too, makes you wonder if we don't pay attention to public probes, then how many classified probes/ships are deployed without our knowing.
Love to get Richard Hoaglands view on these early images. Might pop over to Enterprise mission to see whats going off there.
Anyone know what its duration/life expectancy is .. asuming you have not got anyone to clean the solar panels like the other lander (forgot the name) that a whole bunch of Nasa emplyees witnessed before their screens went blank.

05-26-2008, 04:10 PM
Just like the Phoenix's mobile predecessors, it's supposed to be 90 days. We all know how well the Rovers (Spirit & Opportunity) did, So who knows. At least until Martian winter. -225 Degrees Fahrenheit doesn't seem to be optimal conditions for electronics...

Wow ya know... I cannot wrap my head around this crap. These pictures look like they were taken with a camera from the 60s. Almost every picture they release of anything looks like cheap crap from the 60s.... and ya know my friends' cell phones can take better pictures than that...
If there are any good photos, they take months and months to release. Incompetence, right?
Bad management, right? Yes, heading what is supposed to be our SPACE PROGRAM with ROCKET SCIENTISTS, we have complete incompetence?
Oh and what about all those "HiDef" pictures we're always being shown?
They look like complete shit! So does high definition television. I can't believe people buy into things so easily nowadays.
It... quite simply... is all complete shit, and we're eating it like garfield eats lasagna.

you do realize all of the images I've posted, save for the HiRISE image, were sent immediately as they received them, with no editing. The camera used to take these photos was only to make sure the lander landed in a decent spot and to get initial photos. Later tonight, when the Odyssey satellite does another once-over over the lander, it will send the photos it took today. Its not all Shit, so hold your fuckin' horses man. Nothing is all conspiracy.
I find Mars (well, hell, space) fascinating and I think this is the real thing. To hell with Hoaxie and Lear! lol.

Yeah but, why the wait..why the image processing, why all the waiting?? what are they doing to those images, i mean ..its still in black and white for gods sake!! maybe ill send my canon Colour model to attach to the rover thingy!!
maybe im a bit of a bumb ass , but why is every image black and white.
Anyhow , we are still waiting for the Chinese images too of the moon, god.. i bet they are still reading the Photoshop manual lol
like " how do we use the clone tool for this building moon base" ??
Richard Hoagland and John Lear are shining stars.. leave em alone they do great work and research.
Alessandra
05-26-2008, 04:32 PM
No thats the thing, the original B&W images, if you were not listening earlier....
they were immediately uploaded, and immediately seen. I saw them before the press conference, I saw them as they came in (NASA TV) there was no Image processing.
the camera that took these photos in B&W is a small camera, made to see if the lander LANDED decently (hence the picture of the FOOTPAD and SOLAR CELLS).
No disrespect to Hogie and Lear, I just have a hard time understanding them lol

Alessandra
05-26-2008, 04:38 PM
Yeah but, why the wait..why the image processing, why all the waiting??
you do realize their linkup is pretty much LOS (Line of Sight), right?
In order for them to receive the images, they need to wait until the odyssey satellite is above the horizon, so the folks from JPL can send the command to uplink the info from the lander, to Odyssey, to their computer. Not sure how often it happens, however.

The thing is.... I don't get their logic by using the crappiest little camera, even for a direct LOS link-up. They could have the same success with a better quality camera. It's amazing what advancements in both photography AND communications have done for these types of situations nowadays.... but apparently NASA likes living in the past and doing things in the most difficult way possible.

05-26-2008, 09:52 PM
That's not Jeebus? I was lied to? Damn.
As I was telling Chiiru before, elements of NASA know what is really going on in space. Most of them have no idea because they're not privy to the sort of information.
The minority of pictures/videos/information that ends up being 'leaked' to the public has already gone through a filter.
As with every other government entity, the crooks are in control and the 'straight-edged' people get the shaft. Go figure.
How many scientists have been suppressed and/or murdered because of a threat to the power structure?
Anyway, thanks for the images Chiiru and John. The truth will come out some day.

Clouds of dust and ice swirl past the Surface Stereo Imager (SSI) camera on NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander in a series of images taken on the 132nd Martian day of the mission (Oct. 7, 2008). The images show the increase in storm activity and potential for snowfall.

This graph presents simplified data from overnight measurements by the Thermal and Electrical Conductivity Probe on NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander from noon of the mission's 70th Martian day, or sol, to noon the following sol (Aug. 5 to Aug. 6, 2008).
The graph shows that water disappeared from the atmosphere overnight, at the same time that electrical measurements detected changes consistent with addition of water to the soil.
Water in soil appears to increase overnight, when water in the atmosphere disappears.
TBH I havent seen anything this year from the Phoenix lander. I wonder why.

Interesting to see dust n crap all over the lander foot, So..... why didnt Apollo's feet have the same dust n crap too ????
I do believe they went .. im not so sure all the perfect photos are from the moon.
Keep em comming dude

Those are still false color images.
NASA fucked with the data at a level where color correction is impossible.
I've played with it for hours at a shot trying to get the color wheel on the lander to match the hues photographed on Earth and I'm convinced it's impossible.
The sky could be green for all we know.

I wish we could just see the correct color of that god damn planet. In this case, they definitely are NAZA.

How to create true colored Mars pictures
1. Get a standard red colored NASA/JPL image of Pathfinder or Viking
2. Start your favourite Image Manipulation Program (Photoshop, GIMP, ...)
3. Go to the menu Image->Colors->Curves or similar named menu to change the three RGB color curves
4. Adjust the Blue and Green curves like this and try to optimize the color by moving the upper point a little to the left or right

Make the second image the exact hues of the first and post the levels when they match.
NASA says they did it...

Closest I can get is Hue +26, Lightness -1... and that's still a with a 5% differential.
[attachment=0:3pd5msfs]colorwheels.jpg[/attachment:3pd5msfs]
Load the image above into your favorite graphics editor and sample the color wheels. Green the least variance, blue the has greatest but is still within 5%.
The following image has had the color adjustments I indicated above.

Decidedly different than what you posted.
That's why NASA sends those color calibration targets.

Uhhh... its not in every picture. They image it first so they have a basis of comparison for all subsequent photos.
The calibration target is required because the diffusion of sunlight is different on planet to planet.
I can take Photoshop and make the sky of Mars purple, but it doesn't mean that it approximates reality.

How about green?

Now lets look at your blue version again in the same context.

Devious NASA even thought far enough ahead to manipulate the star pattern so it matched what one would see from Mars instead of Earth...
Grayscale conversion with color replacement to enhance the stars... you can even see some present that aren't obvious in the original image.
