I'm quite sure there are people out there that have been doing this for years, and now or rather soon there will be a government approved way to do it.

NEW YORK--Meet the EFuel100 MicroFueler, which parent company E-Fuel says is the "world's first home ethanol product." It's a personal refinery system that hooks up to a water source, a power source, and a waste water disposal outlet--"just like a washing machine,"

you'll have to go to the link to see this pics of this thing it's not that big and can produce some 35 gallons a week at a rough cost of $1 a gallon. (That rox!) The only draw back is the $10'000 to get the thing and you need a license of some kind from your goobermental peeps...

Quinn explained that the MicroFueler also accepts discarded alcohol, which means that technically you could dispose of that cheap tequila from Cinco de Mayo in a MicroFueler.

Can't see that being a viable option with the pissheads on this site TBH!

Also for the lazy buggers that will no doubt not look at the link, the guy that is bringing this out was also responsible for the "wiimote"... Is he on to another winner with his grow your own fuel depot... Hmmm

Pretty cool technology nonetheless. Its not going to work on a broadscale, but perhaps this type of design is what everyone is looking for. If everyone provides their own fuel source, there will be no need for 'big oil.'

That is my ultimate plan in life: self-sustainability. Relying on nothing other than what my land and neighbors can provide. I'd probably still trade for luxury goods like chocolate/tea/coffee, but maybe I'll just grow them myself and tell big government/business to fuck off. Yes, that sounds like a better idea.

Oh and I'll have the finest homegrown on the planet :smokin:

You know alcohol is a fuel, especially grain (high alcohol content/percentage). I made a post at the other site about alcohol as a fuel, and of course no one paid any attention.

Hemp is a fuel, as is switchgrass, algae (as BK's thread), wood pulp, kitchen grease. I mean shit, we have got to be able to figure a somewhat sound energy policy from that list.

Its fucking ridiculous. Diesel engines can run off alcohol or pretty much any oil, yet we're using outdated gasoline engines. What a fucking retarded race we are. Fuck us.

I think that's hitting the nail on the head, really. There are plenty of ways that we could all do things that would be better for the environment and cheaper.

But it's not easier is it?

Pfttt. Lazy fucks. It's the yeast that does all the hard work producing ethanol anyway.

Community distilleries would help solve one of the big problem withs ethanol for fuel. That being transportation. The minute you pump it into a truck and drive it a hundred miles you completely negate any gains you've produced by using it instead of petroleum. Petroleum is just that good. Keep it local and you keep it economical.

However you need the sugar feedstock. Sugarcane is most common. An acre of land properly managed should yield at least 30 tons of sugarcane. One ton of sugarcane will net you about 20 gallons of ethanol. You can see you need a lot of land to be viable. Not exactly something the typical homeowner can produce in their backyard.
