I am need of a new antivirus/firewall software. I know enough about computers to be dangerous. What do you guys/gals use? What would you recommend?

AdWatch/AdAware
Spybot S&D
AVG Anti-Virus
on top,
then weekly or more often if I have performance problems I run
XoftSpySE
CCleaner
And I'm on FireFox, which lessens viruses somewhat.
I rarely get more than tracking cookies, so something is working right.

Had the adaware software. Then they quit supporting it. Do they have new freeware? Do use the spybot though. I had alway used the spybot along with the adaware because they both caught things the others missed.

Go Mac!

I use adaware, ccleaner and avast as my main defense.
I let Norton run as well since it came with the computer but i don't trust it to be doing anything.
I also paid for speeditup extreme and some other spyware thing which came in the package.

If you really want to piss off big bruddah- make him work his ass off to spy on you!
MAC- They are easier to operate than you think! Its like a self cleaning oven- only more efficient! And you can get rid of the back door subroot passwords Like this:

A mac is out of my price range. Anyway, I"ve had my own computer since 1983, and I'm used to and love my PCs. I even build/work on the hardware.
Single mom, fixed income, semi-deadbeat ex husband = as cheap a high end computer as I can get. Which is currently a Compaq Presario.

Sunbelt (ex-Kerio) firewall. And like Mojo, Avast anti-virus, along with S&D.
All free. I used to use Norton - piece of shit. Locked me out of my own computer.
I now use AVG Anti-virus with Firefox and all my problems went away.

Ad-aware, NOD32, and Spybot, recommended to me by a Microsoft engineer.
I use adaware & spybot S&D for spyware.
They don't seem to run as well as they did a few years ago. They still catch the spyware but there's bugs in them, that react differently to different hardware.
For anti virus I use AVG free, the latest version has a browser link checker that can make an older PC run like a dog, but at least the new version allows you to turn off this feature. Otherwise the program has been consistently good for years.
I use a router as a firewall, plus if I'm in paranoid mode I use Zonealarm free. Still a good product.
I also use adblock plus which is a plugin for firefox, plus the g updater plugin. This allows me to strip out any adverts or dodgy scripts that can and do run on certain forums.
For extra protection I also run a prog called peerguardian. This was created mainly for P2P and bitorrent users but it can also filter web traffic and automatically block ad sites, governments, media sites and spyware by IP if wanted.
Now a little rant...
The above tools are fricking useless if you don't update them regularly.
Wish my mates and family would bloody listen to me:)

I just about went on a killing spree trying to get AVG 8 to install. It would get through installation and then fail starting the service. Not to mention it requires XP SP2 which I despise. I finally just reinstalled 7.5 and it seems to be working fine.
Yeah 7.5 seems to be the preferred version, I know many that downgraded. I'm using SP3, so a lot of bugs seem to be controlled better, but on an old PC like mine, I should probably downgrade to 7.5 too when everything finally grinds to a halt. I prefer win2k pro but it's a trial getting the drivers.

Why? What's wrong with SP2? I'm using SP2. Thinking of using SP2 x64.

It's bloatware. I'd use barebones XP if I didn't need SP1 to support some programs. Seems every service pack cuts performance in half.
Kacen, getting a little carried away with the images, doncha think?
