every year i organise for our club to have a competition against the guys in whyalla (4 + 1/2 hr drive away)

we race up there, they race down at our track, we all see who comes out on top.

last night i went to whyalla for round 1. I decided not to race my monster truck, and concentrated on my 2 wheel drive stadium truck.

being rear wheel drive only, stadium trucks are quite a handful to drive because they slide the back end a lot especially under power. (power slides, woohoo!)

qualifying:

my first qualifier was pretty ordinary, i finished third.

second qualifier: i led this one from the start, and with 2 laps to go i spun out briefly and lost enough time to put me into second place.
i was right behind first and as we hit the final jump before the finish line and when we landed he spun out and i just managed to sneak by, taking the win.

overall, i was top qualifier (TQ) by no more than a second and had pole position for the finals.

race 1 i hit the lead and with only a few laps to go i made a few mistakes (spun out, had a crash) and finished in second place.

at the start of race 2 my toughest competitor flamed out (stalled) on the grid as the race started. by the time his pit man re-started him and got him on track he was 1 lap down and i was starting to open up a comfy lead on second place.

it was 15 minute races and every 5 min i had to pit for fuel as did most others (stadium trucks have small block engines + very small fuel tanks)

after 5min my pit bitch yells out "glenn, FUEL next lap" and as i entered the straight i forgot and blasted past the pits.
i cruised it back around for another lap, hoping to conserve fuel, and as i entered the pit it stalled right when he went to fuel me.
i got restarted, refueled + entered the track just ahead of my rival.

held the lead, but after my 2nd pit (and final) pit stop i started to have trouble holding a good pace and made some mistakes again, and blew my lead..
finished second again.

so in the finals i got 2x 2nd places, and finished second overall for the night.

a few little crashes, and missing my pit window were my main reasons for not bringing home the win. i blew a few good opportunities. :(

overall it was a great night though, and a big turnout.

we finished racing at 12:30AM :D

pics to come

Congrats!

Now I get why guys like those little trucks -- it's all the thrill of a real race without putting your lives on the line in a real car.

Well done Obliv.

Sounds like a blast.

How much beer is involved?

i had one coopers pale ale after the event.

but i went through a bag of weed and half a block of hash.

i shouldnt have had a big rage before the 2nd final, i got so wasted right before the race that with 5min remaining i was in the lead and my eyes started to water and i couldnt focus on the car

i ended up being proof of that old saying "winners dont use drugs"

GN - what i like about RC is this:

ive always loved motorsport, and in my late teens i raced dirt karts (speedway in a gokart)
but you cant practice anywhere. you cant drive it anywhere except on race days during race meets.
and you had to load a trailer and pile of other stuff, then every weekend i would drive several hours around SA to various country meets just to get my fill of racing.

with RC, i can drive it in my back yard, in the street, at local bmx tracks and parks, at construction sites, theres no limit to where it can be driven.

you can also stick it in the boot with a minutes notice and 5min later be somewhere local thrashing it without having cops hassle you.

they are very fast and require a lot of concentration to drive, they have a massive amount of things to adjust to get better handling or performance.
and you can fully rebuild it and upgrade parts as needed so even when imr not racing i can have several hours entertainment at home with maintaining the mechanical side of it aswell.

so its various factors combined: the speed, good racing, suspension setup / adjustment tweaking to find more performance & they need mechanical maintenance..

combine that with about 40 other like-minded, woodstock swilling bogan's and you have a fantastic club meet racing each other.

and yep, if theres a big smash and your car gets broken bad not only is it cheap to repair but you just have a good cry, and feel the pain in your wallet instead of your body

Cool pics Obliv.

While I really don't like motor sports all that much, I am going to Singapore for the grand prix in September. My best mate and I will have a look at the cars, watch a bit of the race and then get shitfaced and go whoring for three days... Hmmm not to sure about the order!

if you go to a grand prix i would suggest that during practice or warm ups you go to various points around the track so you get a true appreciation for what they are.

if you go on the straight all you will see is a blur of colour as they pass at 300kph but wont see much braking or cornering.
if you go to a corner you will only see corner speed and not acceleration.

you get the idea, i attended nearly all Adelaide GP races and my favourite spot was just before the 100m sign on the back straight, right before the hair pin.

seeing them approach flat out around the turn then braking hard + changing down gears right in front of you is truely spectacular and is where a lot of passing or people getting out of shape occurs.

so go for a walk around the entire track, even into general admission if need be and experience the whole thing, then find a great spot to get cosy for the big race :D

i hope you enjoy it, you'll have to let us know what you think.

Will do mate, hoping to get myself a new camera before I go (DSLR) and will take freaking oddles of pics.

We have walk about tickets so we can wonder around about half the track area, cos Singapore is such a small place they will close off the grandstand areas. Also hoping to have a go on the singapore flyer (the big wheel) you can see into Malaysia. I'll see if I can get a pic of BK's house from the top!
