SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― The Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge and office towers throughout San Francisco will go dark for an hour Saturday night as part of a global campaign to raise awareness about climate change.

San Francisco is one 25 major cities around the world participating in Earth Hour, a one-hour voluntary shutdown of nonessential lights between 8 and 9 p.m.

The shutdown began Saturday in Sydney, where the Australian city's iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge went dark along with hundreds of homes and businesses.

Organizers say the event will do little to slow global warming, but it will help make people aware of the need to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

Atlanta, Chicago and Phoenix are among the U.S. cities taking part in the second-annual Earth Hour, which is being organized by the World Wildlife Fund.

In San Francisco, Coit Tower and the Ghirardelli Square sign will be go dark, and some restaurants plan to turn off exterior lights and offer candlelight dinners.

I noticed google has gone dark too.

I've been keeping the lights off here all day.

Can't wait to see what downtown will look like! Or the sky! Hopefully...

If hubby was going to be home at a decent hour I'd have him take us up to the hills to snap some pics. I'm sure the media will take some.
