View Full Version : The United Nations

The United Nations, the largest global governance (that's different then global government) in existence,
nearly every country (I believe it's 1 or 2 that are'nt) that is recognized by the security council is a member in it.

Now over the last few months my opinion of the UN has seen some changes.

Previously I've supported the U.N., not all their decisions, but still, however considering the things that
have happened over the last few months (Kosovo not being recognized and no one doing anything about
China's atrocities towards Tibetans) and some things I've learned my opinion of the UN is now quite different.

The United Nations, as most know was the successor to the League of Nations and was originally created
during the Cold War, as a way to prevent massive global wars like WWI & WWII from occurring again by
bringing all nations to the table to talk their issues out first, rather then shoot and ask questions later.

However, the U.N., while it's original intent is noble, has for the most part become fundamentally useless in
many areas and highly corrupt in others.

Now, we obviously should'nt just up and leave without trying to do anything, but we should'nt just sit
quiet and not do anything either.

This has lead me to think that we should try to fundamentally reform the United Nations, particularly by removing
the permanent security council and getting rid of the use of security council veto's.
Secondly we need to establish a system in which either the legislature or the people of each country vote on a
single Representative for their country rather then just having various officials simply appointed because the
Executive of a country wants to give their friend a position, going further with this the U.N should force this
democratic system on countries that are'nt democratic in regards to voting for their UN representative.

If none of this is possible, then I say we leave the United Nations, and possibly form a new, better organization.

So, what does everyone else think?

I think it's a bit naive to believe that ANY global "governance" wants to prevent World Wars.

War = profit at the sacrifice of lower and middle class lives.

Big government loves that.

That's not how it always was, and indeed during the 50's and 60's companies were pretty much scared into submission by the governments, it's only since the mid 70's that we've seen this massive move of profit mongering on the current level.

I'm not too trusting of the UN since they have a few human rights violators like China on the Human Rights Commission.

That's like getting a hungry bear to guard your butcher shop.
