Does a cold/fresh air intake really make that big of a difference in HP, efficency, etc? I have been debating on getting one for my truck, but not sure if it is worth it.

It does.

Cooler air is more dense.

Therefore, more can be
packed into the combustion
cycle.

This allows it to burn hotter,
faster and cleaner.

K&N filters are worth what
they cost.

Thanks. Now to find one. Another question for you then. Have you ever heard or used AMS (sp?) oil? I know someone that swears by it. Says that even the best synthetic oils test only half as good as this stuff. He says he has put a cold air intake and replaced all the fluids in his truck with AMS products and he has gone from 15 mpg city to 24/25 mpg. He also says that he only has to change oil every 25000 miles. I am not so sure about this stuff. If it is so good...Why havent they mass marketed this stuff?

First, his air-intake is probably
the reason for the increased
MPG.

I think he's talking about
AMSOIL (http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/atm.aspx)
products.

I'd not suggest 25k miles between
oil changes. Just me, though.

If you do choose to go with
them, look over the warranty VERY
closely.

The gains from a CAI depend on the design of the original equipment. If the stock airbox and ducting is cramped with multiple bends and sharp angles, do it. Just make sure the filter doesn't locate somewhere where it can get submerged. Also it needs to be either completely outside the engine bay like in a fender or isolated with a sealed wall of some kind.

On synthetic oil don't go full synthetic if you have high miles. It will shrink seals as well as remove buildup that may be the only thing keeping them from leaking. Not knowing this I switched to synthetic on one of my ricers and soon found my main seal was pissing all over the driveway. And definitely do not go 25K between changes. It may not lose viscosity as fast as dino but it will still get filled with carbon and other nastiness that clogs the filter. 5K, tops.
