I've heard various hypotheses about things like this over the years. Some people think that we have consciousness because of our penchant for psychedelic plant ingestion.

I've heard similar things.

If I'm not mistaken there is some offshoot religion that believes that the oil that Mary anointed Jesus's feet with was Cannabis seed oil.

They consider anointing stuff with it and smoking Cannabis as part of their religion.
Not sure if they're legally aloud to do so in the US, I think they are in the UK though.
